Great design ! One of my preferate at Desoto's for thois modelyear ! It wasn't yet excessive as it used to become in the later years with V. Exner . The front design is just gorgeous and elegant with its simple shape.

The 1954 facelift clearly shows Buick influence and the name "Special" comes directly from Buick as well. Edgar Kaiser later said, "Slap a Buick name on it and it would sell like hotcakes."

Great review. Enjoy your pro and con take on these vehicles, which i personally find attractive. I also like this style of luxury where the occupants are shielded from outside intrusions.

Brown Eagle wagon was my 2nd favorite car (1st was a brown 70 Rebel SST wagon!) New Subarus could take lesson from AMC.

Don’t remember the exact year, but my dad got tired of the waiting list for a normal car and bought one of these. I was a regular teenage driver at the time and really didn’t like the free-wheeling concept. Once driving down a steep canton road I tried pulling the knob on the dash to change from that and it didn’t work. Luckily it had good brakes and I got it slowed to where the pullout knob now worked. Guess I really hated that car and was thankful for the trade up to a 52 merc. Loved that car.

Seen July 2024. Video. I owned 1969 Imperial LeBaron. And the 1981 the Frank Sinatra edition of The Imperial. It is a proud name. And it was offered by Chrysler Corporation of America.

Kaiser's original factory, in Willow Run Michigan, had been built to construct B-24 bombers. It was massive - much bigger than they needed. Henry Kaiser entered into a five-year lease in 1947 but didn't renew it. Instead, in 1953 he purchased Willys-Overland in Toledo Ohio, and moved Kaiser production there. Kaiser (and Frazer) used Continental 6-cylinder engines. Continental had built a factory on Jefferson Avenue in Detroit back in 1912. Over the years Continental engines were used by numerous automobile and truck manufacturers, but by the end WWII the plant was partially "mothballed". When Kaiser-Frazer began building cars at the Willow Run plant, engine production at Continental's Jefferson Avenue plant resumed, but since they essentially had only one customer, Continental decided to sell the factory and tooling to Kaiser. When Kaiser shifted automobile production to Toledo, they also moved engine manufacturing there, and the Continental-designed six essentially stayed in production (for Kaiser Jeeps) long after they stopped making automobiles in this country.

My grandparents had this same car. Color , year , etc….. no air conditioning. I can remember my grandmother pulling up to the Woco Pep station and telling the attendant to fill her up with 10 gals and charge it. 10 gals probably carried this car about two days so you get the picture hour often she did this. My grandfather was a dentist so he looked at this car as a doctor car if you couldn’t purchase a Cadillac or Lincoln. It was a high cool car that drove like the big land yacht it was. I would sit on the rear bumper just to feel the torsion bar do its trick. Thanks for the memories.

360 did not arrive until 1970 as that was the year all AMC V8's were enlarged. The 290 became the 304 and the 343 became the 360. The 390 stayed until 1970 then in 1971 it became the 401.

It was the peak of American Luxury except the darn emissions and CAFE by democrats. But the later 60s to about 1981 was a great time for GM, Ford and Chrysler (before bankruptcy)

AMC just had a weird, clumsy looking line of cars in the 1970's. Even their sports car, the Javelin was strangely bulbous in the rear end. I was a teenager at the time. I remember going down to the AMC lot to dream of getting a car, among others. AMC never really made it into my dreams.

Worked as a security guard while in college. One of our contracts was at the auto train's unloading yard on the west coast. Imagine pulling up to the yard at 2 am and seeing a "sea of Pacers". At 6'4" I immediately recognized them as possibly being easy to get in and out of.

The auto that bankrolled AMC. I heard of the list endearing nicknames the car was called. The pregnant roller skater being one of them.
