I can appreciate Chuck Thompson's optimistic closing...yes 15-2 was a great record but the Super Bowl loss to the Jets left a bitter taste in the mouths of many....Shula remarked that every thing they accomplished that year was out the window after losing to the Jets...the Colts owner had a great post game party planned to celebrate a victory and was so mad a Shula that Don ended up in Miami 2 years later....the loss to the Jets was so bad that most of the players on the team at the time saw the Super Bowl V victory over the Cowboys as a hallow accomplishment..Bubba Smith never wore his super bowl V championship ring..

It's a shame, really, that losing one game should ruin an otherwise great season. Of course, I'm sure the Patriots felt the same way after losing their perfect season to the Giants.

I hated seeing the America’s Game 1970 Colts edition for one reason. All the guys seemed really bitter about SB3 and i understand but in a way I don’t. It’s very difficult to win a championship especially in pro football. I know there was the heartbreak of 1964,65 and 67 to go along with SB3 as well. Many great teams never won a championship. 70s Vikings and Rams, 90s Bills, The Raiders for all the great teams they had in the 70s, they one won a single SB in that decade. Winning a championship is something guys like Gayle Sayers and Dick Butkus never got to experience. The Colts had so many great teams in that era. I think that 1970 should stand on its own. That Colts team was great. And guys really need to get a perspective. If a SB loss is the worst thing to happen in your life, then you’re lived a great life. Stop with all the negativity already and look back with gratitude and pride that you played in a then wonderful city and played the game at the highest of levels and sometimes you need luck to smile on you to win a championship.

To me, one can treat Super Bowl III as an exhibition game. Sure, the owners had gigantic egos, and wanted to beat the AFL. But the NFL champions of that year was indeed the Baltimore Colts. I am, if I really was honest, this was the best team the franchise has ever put on the field. I’m counting that Giants Championship overtime win. I am even counting the Indianapolis teams.

They forgot to mention that Jimmy Parker retired after the 1967 season. This was the closest that Don Shula had a perfect season until the 1972 Miami Dolphins. Pro Football Hall of Fame members Don Shula Johnny Unitas Don Mackey Bubba Smith should be in the Pro Football Hall of Fame along with Mike Curtis. The season was 13-1, and the only loss was against the Cleveland Browns but met again in the title game in the final Sunday of 1968.

Why was the game in Cleveland for the NFL Championship? I understand the Browns beat Baltimore earlier, but don't the Colts get to host it since they had the better record

Rotation, in the old NFL before the merger in an even numbered year ( like 1968) the Eastern Conference champion got the championship 🏆 game , home field advantage for the better record didn't take place until 1975, long after the merger

@@Denner771 Two years later. In the first game, Joe served up six picks, which didn't help, but he also threw for nearly 400 yards (397) and almost came back to beat the Colts, losing only 29-22. That's not really shutting down Joe and he was injured and didn't play in the second game against Baltimore. As for winning the Super Bowl, congrats, but they were really lucky they didn't have to face Kansas City in the AFC Championship. The Colts would have gotten waxed like they did the first time against the Chiefs.
