1968 Dodge Charger III concept was the most aerodynamic car built by Chrysler Corporation. Charger III was intended to be an idea car showcasing new features that could have been standard in future Chrysler models.
Charger III had no doors or windows that open. Push a button and an aircraft style canopy would swing up. The long-tapered hood had concealed headlights and twin air scoops. Charger III had three air brake flaps that synchronized with the regular brakes and a flip-up periscope rear-view mirror. Under the brake flaps were twin quick fill gas caps. The rear panel held full width taillights and twin rectangular exhaust tips. The 42-inch-tall body was originally painted with Candy Apple Red paint. It was later sprayed with Gold paint.
Charger III was designed to accept any Dodge V8 engine including the 426 cu-in Hemi. One of the experimental features was an engine service hatch that housed the electrical fuses as well as gauges used to check engine fluids.
The interior was space craft inspired. Astronaut style bucket seats had quick release seat belts. Twin bucket seats raised eight inches as the steering wheel assembly swung away. The full-length center console housed the automatic transmission gear selector, parking brake lever, passenger assist handle, and onboard chemical fire extinguisher. The recessed switch console at driver's left housed integrated driver controls such as lighting, windshield washers, wipers, radio, heater, and air conditioning. The swing away instrument pod incorporated speedo, tach, clock, and engine gauges. All of the driver controls and swing away pod instrumentation was standard 1968 Dodge Charger.
With no engine or drivetrain installed, the Charger III was a non-functional glider. Charger III was destroyed once its display career ended. However, a handful of bodies were made from the original molds. One was mounted on the late ‘60s sensational Flying Dutchman nitro funny car, the only Charger III in drag racing.
