Hewland LG400 (large gearbox 4 speed) straight cut gears

Those are straight cut gears. With that amount of torque, helical gears will bend from the side load before they break. Spur gears, on the other hand will just have teeth break off. An ideal situation would be herringbone gears but they are horrifically expensive and difficult to manufacture. CNC has changed that somewhat though.
