The exact moment I became a lifelong devotee of acoustic folk music was in the summer of 1965 in a coffeehouse called the Ins and Outs club as a guy named Jim played this very song in just this hypnotic way long into the night. Rather oddly, the Ins and Outs Club was on a narrow street facing the Atlantic City Convention Hall, where the Democratic National Convention met to nominate LBJ and The Beatles played during their first U.S. tour. You could hear the shrieks of the audience a mile away up the Boardwalk.

Nice version. In '62 Karen Dalton told me that Bobby Kaufman (the poet) had written the lyrics to that song. Maybe he did.

My favourite of the various lessons and covers on YT of this beautiful composition. Such fluid, clear and precise picking... and if you ever feel like giving us a rendition of Mississippi John Hurt song - wow, would love to hear that!

I had never heard this until the other day. I love it. I have trouble playing these types of songs because I can't keep the thumb working independently from fingers. I fake it but it's not quite proper sounding. the thumb has always given me problems maintaining the Alternating bass.

Christian Watson They're great man. They've got a real nice tone once they're worn in and you don't have to worry about your fingernails breaking off in the middle of picking…just get a bunch ( I lose em like crazy)
