1968 Mercury Cougar GT-E 427 Muscle Car Of The Week Video #59
This week, we're bringing you an often overlooked muscle car, the 1968 Mercury Cougar GT-E. These were sporty but comfortable, and the GT-E bought you a 7-liter V8 to make things interesting. Most were the smooth 428 V8, but some were ordered with the far less subtle 427 side oiler... like the one in this video. The 427 was rated at 390 HP and has a great rumble, but the car is refined enough to drive and enjoy every day. The Brothers Collection is home to several rare Mercury cats, this is one of the favorites!

A friend's cousin had just bought one earlier in the day one Saturday in early 1980 when I ran into them at his house. It was a 1968 GT-E 427. I still remember that he paid $5,000 from a local classic car salvage yard that dealt in wrecked or sitting sometimes engineless classics and muscle cars.

It's quite possible that in 1968, only the Cougar was produced with a 427 engine. However, the owner's manual for the 1968 full-sized Ford shows the 427 as an engine choice. But then again, it also shows a 4-speed manual to be one of the transmissions available.

I had a 67 Cougar, kinda base model but had a few options, such as, full length console, bucket seats and a few other minor things. When I bought it, it was basically dead, the engine had been swapped for a 351W, the auto was a beefed up C6 and the diff had been robbed from a Australian delivery Valiant, engine was destroyed as was the trans, I rebuilt the 351W and C6 and fitted a 9" slippery, man was it fast, I redid all the suspension with later Australian XF Falcon discs, upper/lower control arms, radius rods ball joints etc etc. I loved the thing, the saddest thing ever was I was in an accident with my other car, a 79 FSJ SJ Cherokee 360/T-400/BW1339 full time 4WD, I had no insurance on my Jeep and it cost 30k to restore it, the other driver also had no insurance, so I was screwed, I didn't like the idea of my family suffering from something that was not their doing and I sold my beloved Cougar to buy and restore another FSJ, probably the biggest regret of my life, I have pined for my Cougar ever since.

This one is slightly detuned having only a single 4 barrel carburetor and hydraulic lifters unlike the R code dual quad engine which was available on the full size cars. After the supply of 427 engines ran out these cars were built with the 428 which was a more street friendly engine.

2:18 I was hoping he'd hold the gas pedal down a little longer, but I understand this is a super rare car and it shouldn't be thrashed for no reason. It's widely accepted that these engines made 400 to 410 HP at the crank. 390 HP is a bit underrated. The bottom ends on these engines were tough as balls, too. They actually stayed together which is more than you can say for a lot of other super stock engines back then.

Weird they didn't produce it in Q Code or R Code configuration with a 4 spd tranny. On the other hand, R Code would have necessitated manual steering, and maybe the Cougar engine bay didn't have room for the factory header style exhaust manifolds.

@@chargermaster586 It was based on the same chassis, but it was hardly a clone. For one thing the wheelbase was longer and the quarter panels and roof line was different. I don't think that there were any body panels that were shared with the Mustang. The interior was different as well, and the Cougar had more sound insulation.

Kevin, great video and shots! A few notes for you though..the XR-7 package was really nothing more than a luxury option package that affected the interior only. It included the simulated wood grain dash and switch/cluster package, leather inserted seats front and rear, and lighting alternatives. Nothing more than that. Also, the 427 was the more common engine brought with the GT-E package and the phasing out of the Sideoiler was really the reason the 428CJ was introduced late in the 1968 build cycle. It had everything to do with timing of the order from the dealerships. There were 357 GT-Es made with 427s and 37 with 428CJs (of which only 3 had 4 speed transmissions, none in 427 cars) Thanks for the promotion of the GT-E Cougar. It is a fantastic car!

Ok I’ll jump in Had a 68 in the touquise ? Color. It was beautiful and so cool. I was about 19 at the time. Met an ambulance at a huge intersection in the rain, and thunder with ac on and huge traffic. he went through the red light, never saw him and we hit corners. Running through the rain to phone to get another car (going to an important gig). Parents brought me another car. Ambulance had a heart attack victim in it. Had it been anothe second, he gets me in the drivers door. Banged me head and knee but made it to the gig. I just can’t remember what we did with the car. Traded or sold or what. Police ticketed me. When to court with a lawyer and judge toss this after one question from my attorney to the ambulance driver. that car was the coolest I ever had.

Long story about stupid things 16 year olds do, lol. I sold it to a junk yard for $175. I personally like the interior of the regular cougar with console better than the XR7’s. joe quillun 1974 was about the time everyone was looking for small gas mileage cars and dumping gas hogs. Convinced we would never be able to afford to run big V8's again and leaded gas was vanishing from the pumps. 4 year old Blazers were in classified ads for $1,500 bucks and there were no takers. Muscle cars were relics of a fondly remembered recent but still bygone era and most young newly married soon to be daddies had one they were trying to unload to buy Toyota Station Wagons or something similar.

Scuttlebutt has it ferd underrated their big boy engines by 100ish horsepower, not unlike the other big manufacturers, they all did it from what I've heard. I just saw them wreck a nice 69 Cougar on CHiPs tv show from the 70s, they also toasted a 69 GTO too, what a waste those campy shows were wrecking muscle car history. Sweet ride though,Merc definitely got this bad cat right! ▪☆☆☆▪
