Well put-most guys here don't seem to realize the pioneers of the sport competed on archaic equipment with no spring-earlier gymnasts even competed floor on cement, wood, and carpet! I seriously doubt most gymnasts today could throw double twists, and double backs on such floors.

One of the better examples you'll ever see of why those old Soviet teams used to blow the rest of the world out of the water on floor exercise. Max of difficulty (given the time), flawless technique, and of course could out-dance anybody else.

This is so much more suggestive of rhythmic, when compared to today's gymnastics! She looks as much like a ballerina as a gymnast. And she has curves! Women's gymnastics is still beautiful when done by actual women. You don't have to look like a 12-year-old ball of muscle.

Does anyone here know why she retired so early? She was just 19 after this competition and already gone....there was hardly ever one single gymnast out there being half as graceful and unique in her smooth and so elegant movements as she certainly was. She had a great rivalry with Caslavska from 1965 on and both these women really had their outstanding qualities.

@BoraBoraGirl2001 not to mention that the training conditions were completely different, no pits, no tumbletrak, trampolines or anything. I'd say that the way gymnasts train today compared to45 years is almost as much of a radical shift as the differences in how they competed!

This was lovely. But it's amazing how much female gymnasts have improved since then in terms of technical difficulty! I was a male high school gymnast in the early 70's, and I was nowhere near elite in terms of the men's gymnastics of the time. But, aside from the front walkover, I could do all of the tumbling skills in this routine. Even during the 1972 Olympics I was watching TV and saying "I could do that!" when the women came on. Not today though! What women are doing today is amazing!!!

The equipment has also changed a lot. Today the floors have tons of springs underneath so that the gymnasts can tumble higher. The vault is a totally different shape, and the uneven bars are a lot further apart. Balance beam has probably changed the least.

When I was a gymnast, I was always barefoot. I say bare feet is the PROPER way to do gymnastics. With today's skills, shoes cause falls. I prefer modern gymnastics to the old style, but I agree that Ms. Kuchinskaya did a nice job

Never thought if that way - shoes causing falls - Oksana Chusovitina doesn't seem to think so. They looked more elegant, balletic on floor/beam. Could never understand why any of them wore shoes on the bars though as Chusovitina has been doing for the last few yeras

It is called inovation and evolution. I mean look at the ballet elements we see in this routine. Ballet has evolved RIGHT ALONG with gymnastics and has become WAY more difficult techniqly as well. I know, I am an ex dancer and have studies the history of ballet. So you can't really blame gymnastics for getting farther and farther advanced wtih eer year....we are human...that is what e do....evole and get better.

Seems like the U.S. has been at or near the top for about 27 years. I like the routines to keep most of the technical moves, but add more ballet and more gracefulness to the routines. But say it in a way that’s not mean and degrading. And if you’re bringing correction, bring it the same way, you want it brought to you. I’ve read evil and barbaric comments against POC that are gymnasts. If you hate gymnastics because African Americans are doing well in the sport, well only God can help you. But if you mean well, and your desire for more grace and clean lines, say it without name calling, because that helps no one. And some people expect certain US fans to be hateful & racist, but fool them this time. Show that you aren’t racist!!
