I had a 68 Plymouth Fury III fastback in 1975. It had a 318 engine and 3spd automatic transmission with power steering, power brakes and air conditioning. I added a am/fm cassette player to it. Drove it for 3 years and it was a nice cruiser.😎

Had a 66 fury 318 in highschool. Put that car though hell but it took it. It was a tank. Later got a 70 Chrysler imperial brougham440. Power and pure luxury. This car looks like a combination of those two. Great purchase.

Beautiful!!. My Dad rewarded himself after he got back from Vietnam with a 68 Road Runner with the 383 and Torqueflite.... Unfortunately he had to trade it after a year because of high insurance rates... We do have the VIN for it and last we knew it was still in existence...
@donaldpiper97633 ай бұрын
I bought a 68 Road Runner in 72 while stationed in Charleston South Carolina. Loved that car but unfortunately a drunk slammed into me the insurance totaled it out, bent the frame bad .of course nowadays people would see that as not that big of a deal and restore it. Back then they just wrote them off. Last I knew of it was in a junkyard in N.C.

Beautiful Fury!! I heard you mention "Super Commando" a couple of times. That moniker was used for the 440CuIn 375-horse motor. 'Commando" is correct for the 383CuIn motor. I minor point perhaps. My good friend 'Hilty' had a blue '68 Fury III Sport with the 440/4-sp back in high school. 47 yrs later those memories still make me smile!
@pennsyltuckyfreedom26303 ай бұрын
Partially correct. The “Commando” was the base 383. 290hp, 2 barrel, single exhaust. The “Super Commando” was the HP 383, 330hp 4 barrel, dual exhaust. The 375 horse 440 was also called a “Super Commando”, just had a different number in the vin. The 5th digit of my VIN is “H” - which is the High Performance 383 “Super Commando”. If the 5th digit were a “G” it would be the base Commando 383. A “K” would be the base 440, and “L” would be the high performance 375 horse 440.

With The 4 speed and the sure grip, maybe the original owner just wanted it to be better in the snow. Fit a lot of cement blocks in the trunk if more traction was needed. So not only is it drop dead gorgeous, but it's nice to know it's probably pretty good in the snow !

Man is that cool I like you didn’t know such a beast was possible with the factory four speed man that thing would be hard on gas and hard on the licence but hooches mama it would be fun!
@pennsyltuckyfreedom26303 ай бұрын
Surprisingly easy on gas, even with the 383. If I had to guess, it probably gets around 15-17mpg cruising. I’ve put a little over 500 miles on it so far, and I expected to stop for gas more often than I do. The 4 speed paired with the big block torque makes it really easy to keep the RPMs low, it has enough torque to almost idle through all 4 gears. In 4th gear at 60mph it sits right around 2300rpm with 3:23s out back, with no strain on the engine whatsoever.

I love it but I wouldn’t think that it would be fun to drive due to the lack of power steering and brakes. I always loved that starter noise. My parents best friends bought a new 1968 Fury III 4 door sedan. I remember it being a really nice car. It replaced their 1960 DeSoto 4 door hardtop.
@pennsyltuckyfreedom26303 ай бұрын
It really drives great even without power steering or brakes. Parking lot maneuvering can be tricky with no power steering, but once it gets going down the road it’s almost unnoticeable. You’d never know it doesn’t have power steering. The manual transmission being able to downshift to stops really helps with braking also, it’s very pleasant and easy to drive. 👍🏻

My car was a '67 that I bought in 1973, with the same engine but it was an automatic. It was maroon with a vinyl top. Absolute gas pig which only got 8mpg. I worked 20 miles away and had to fill it twice a week. I kept it less than a year and was glad to get rid of it. Nice car but at that time I couldn't afford putting that much gas into it.

Lucky to have learned how to drive in High School, they offered a 10 week course. Learned with an all new basic model Plymouth Fury 3. I went to High Shool In LA, Alexander Hamilton High, '69-'72. The driving course was very thorough you had class room and then actual driving afterwards. Nothing like that now, too prohibitive and costly, what with Insurance rates and all

My Dad had a’67 Fury III 2 Dr hardtop, 318 torqueflight. It didn’t have power brakes and that was a serious shortcoming. At highway speed, you couldn’t stand on the brakes hard enough to honor a yellow light. Worst brakes I’ve ever experienced and it was two years old at that time.

I know a GTX came with a Hurst shifter in 69 but an Inland shifter in 68. I was not aware that any C Body four speed came with a Hurst.
@pennsyltuckyfreedom26304 ай бұрын
If mind serves me correct, 1968 was the last year for a 4 speed in a C Body. Early ‘68 would have the Inland like mine, but halfway through ‘68 they ditched the Inland for the Hurst, and the last of the ‘68 4 speed C Bodies did receive the Hurst shifter. Thats even more rare than my own car - to have a Hurst 4 speed C Body.
@carebear22723 ай бұрын
I think you maybe wrong, the inland shifter is super rare for 68, at least for chargers, supposedly I heard in 68 there was a strike in the 4sp plant or something is why they Chrysler went to the hurst shifter, I’ll look it up because there was only a couple hundred in the charger for 68 with a inland shifter, so now I’m curious 🧐 on your car, I have the the original copy’s of the production numbers in my books, your car could be super rare
@carebear22723 ай бұрын
What I’m getting is 40, 68 C body’s came with an inland shifter… that’s from a Mopar C body thread. Your cat was a 3 combo color car to which would have been a special order car to have black top, white interior and blue exterior, most cars delivered to dealers had the same color interior as there vinyl top, to have a three different color combo is very desirable and uncommon.
@johnnypk19633 ай бұрын

@carebear22723 ай бұрын
Depends on were the car was delivered to what state for the air cleaner, I think dual air cleaner pretty rare. I never personally like the color red in a Mopar, what color blue was it? If it was QQ1 you have a gem 💎
@426Hemisrule3 ай бұрын
Beautiful car! Looks good in red, although I may have preferred the original blue with white interior. It's hard to believe that paint finish is about 25 years old. My first car (that wasn't a hand-me-down from my mother and father) was a 1968 Plymouth Sport Fury in Forest Green with a painted white roof. It had a white interior with the front bucket seats and the center seat with fold-down armrest (boy how I wanted the center console with a floor shift for my 3-speed Torqueflite). It had optional front disc brakes and so it had the special wheelcovers for disc brakes. Are you sure your car has the Super Commando 383 cu. in. engine? I noticed the Commando badge on the front fenders, which is what my Sport Fury had. If I remember correctly, the Commando engine was a 383 with 2-BBl carb and single exhaust, and was rated at 290 HP. The Super Commando was a 383 with 4-BBL carb and dual exhaust and was rated at 330 HP. Does your car have a 2-BBL or 4-BBLcarb, although it could have been changed. Your dual exhaust could have been added later, as well. At any rate, a great car. I'd love to still have mine today!
@pennsyltuckyfreedom26303 ай бұрын
It’s the Super Commando. There never was a “Super Commando” fender badge, they all said “Commando V8” regardless of output. The 5th digit in my vin is an “H” which designated the High Performance 383.
@426Hemisrule3 ай бұрын
Thanks for your response and clearing up my misunderstanding. I thought there had been a "Super Commando" fender badge. The 5th digit in my VIN was "G" . By the way, my Sport Fury had PS, PB, A/C, and an AM/FM radio.
