I enjoy the video. It took me back to a different time, circa 1969 when I bought a brand new Pontiac GTO from chieftain Pontiac in Timonium Maryland. I wish I still had the car. It wasn’t until much later on but I came to understand just what it was that I had. The engine code was “YZ“, which was a Ram Air III (3) and it was coupled to a turbo 400. Very quickly that engine ate that turbo 400 and then another one. If I recall, I paid around $3600 for that car brand new and I sold it in 1982 for $1500. Stock, it would do low 14s around 104 miles an hour. The other thing it would do is snap motor mounts, and the fan would go right through the upper radiator hose which would really piss me off. I wanted to mention a problem that I had, well a lot of people had. The starter would overheat during warm summer days and the damn thing would not start. After the installation of a heat shield, the car would start all the time. I had to do with compression and heat and all that other good stuff. I know the 1968 version also had that problem. After it ate the second turbo 400, off to the machine shop it went and the car came back three months later with a Muncie M 22, A different petal arrangement as you might imagine. It also came with a monster pressure plate and a scatter shield, I learn to hate driving a car with that monster clutch but the car then became a frame twister so off to the machine shop it went for body stiffening. You mentioned that the car had a lot of Torque. It’s insane how much torque a Pontiac GTO has. The last thing I will say is that the first day I had the car, I almost wrecked it because of that torque. You spin that thing up and you let off the gas and it takes a while to uncouple it, so don’t do any burnouts on a one-way street with cars parked on either side, LOL! You will wind up buying quarter panels! Enjoy the car. Hang onto it. On a footnote, my car belongs to a collector now in Indianapolis, Indiana. It’s now worth over $100,000. Ain’t life grand!
@RamblinAround5 жыл бұрын
Thanks Douglas, I appreciate you taking the time to share that with us. We addressed the starter issue by swapping on a modern gear reduction mini-starter. We definitely will need to add a torque strap, so it doesn't break motor mounts. Jordan just ordered a 461 stroker kit for the 400, so it's going to be making some serious torque very soon. He had the turbo 400 built to withstand 800 HP, so hopefully it will be up to task. Thanks for watching, we appreciate it!

Update Nov 2nd: Just ordered a 461 Stroker kit from Butler Performance....Eagle 4.25 stroke crank, forged rods & pistons. So this entire setup is going to be changing soon. The current setup was enough to convince me to go further with the build. Now, I want to see how quick I can make it.

Have Butler match up a nice roller cam. Today's cams are far better than the factory offerings.

Look at Jim Hand's videos. He taught me to build Pontiac's using a combination of factory parts. In the end he did use a stroked 455 (474) but was still running 7K3 heads. My own 69 GTO runs high 11's with a 455 running an 041 (Ram Air IV) cam. It sounds mean as hell and makes excellent hp. Modern roller grinds may be better over all but for a flat tappet the Ram Air IV rocks!

Nice build. I have a 69 GTO convertible with a manual transmission., so it has Ram air 3 heads. I went with dished pistons and slightly over bored cylinders. It’s all stock and runs good on pump gas. It’s meant to be a reliable cruiser, but still goes good when hitting the pedal. It will burn tires until I hit 3rd gear with 3:23 gears (air conditioned car). So it’s fun enough without high compression.

Good choice...I learned about high comp heads when I was late teens & early 20's. I had another lesson when I got locked up this last time. I had 3 550cid Caddy motors & 1 473 Caddy motor. The 473 got the High Comp heads. I also found out about Rad Cad. Kinda had to kick my own ass because I could have had 2 badass trucks. I believe the head swap would give me 1hp per cu.in. I love the sound of your engine Jordan...you did real good!!!! Aloha, Chief

There is almost no difference in flow between the 16's and 6X heads, stock or ported. The guys at Butler said, if anything, the 16's flow a bit better...but it's a negligible difference. It has longtube headers with 3" collectors, 3" H-pipe, and 3" Flowmaster super 10 single chamber clones with turndowns.

RamblinAround those turndowns I think really give it that fun mean sound! I’m all the way out the back with my 65 and thinking of doing turndowns when I’m done with my 454 swap.
@RamblinAround5 жыл бұрын
@@ketotrucker3528 I think the turndowns do make it pound off the ground a bit more, gives it a deeper sound.

Dont know what cam you are running but it is hard to beat Ra IV grind....Melling makes good copy ...still has bottom end...3.90 or more (numericallly) STOP using bottleneck studs....virtually impossible to get ZERO lash even with BOTTLENECK jam nuts

Now that I know the power that a Pontiac can make, I'm going all in. Today, I ordered a 461 stroker kit from Butler Performance. I'm also going to completely go through the heads, fresh valve job, valves, ARP 7/16 studs, etc. I will be looking for a different cam too. This one is .443 IN / .465 EX on a 112 LSA. I'm definitely going to go a bit larger with the next one.

@@RamblinAround 3 buddys all built 461 stroker motors. One edlebrock rpm heads other 2 had Kauffman heads. Roller cam all had different specs. Hooker supercomps. They all rip! Pile of torque

@@fvgc454ss That's good to hear, we're getting really close to having this one done. The heads should be done by Tuesday, then it'll be time to start assembling it. The short block is ready and waiting.

When you look at the rear 3/4 view of the '68 GTO/LeMans, which was the first year of the revised body style, you can see how Chrysler pretty much copied the silhouette of this body shape for the '71 Satellite/Roadrunner/GTX. It's a dead ringer.

@brucefulper42045 жыл бұрын
Thanks for telling the truth about the need for meeting the octane requirement with those heads. Plus, the best you'll ever do porting wise is to get a 25 to 30 cfm increase per port. You'll never get them to work as well as a well ported set of Edelbrocks. But the 16's are a good poor mans race head. www.PontiacEngines.com
@RamblinAround5 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I'd rather have it 9.3:1 or so, but I used what I had. Right now, I'm having the block machined, so I can install a 461 stroker kit. I used 22cc dished pistons to keep the compression somewhat reasonable. I'd like to run the Edelbrock heads ultimately, but I'll probably have to run the ported 16's for a bit, just because it's what I can afford right now.
