Jose Feliciano's unconventional pre-game singing of "The Star-Spangled Banner" aroused considerable controversy, with the Tigers and NBC receiving thousands of angry letters and telephone calls about the performance.] Lolich also blamed Feliciano's unusually long rendition for causing him to get cold after his warm-ups and thus give up three early runs.

You get to enjoy the mastery of color commentary offered by George Kell, who was a good enough hitter and player to make the Hall of Fame that way. From the iconic (for Tiger fans) play at the plate, at 1:25:10, he describes the 2nd replay..."These umpires, they amaze you with these calls, Curt, watch it now...Doug Harvey pointed right in front of the plate, and you can see, as he plants his foot there, that he is just in front of it, he did not touch the plate." We were blessed with decades of his folksy, unimpeachable knowledge of the game in Michigan.

This is the first time I ever heard George Kell announce. He has a distinctive voice and an accent that reminds me of my late grandfather. His manner of speaking is so strong and certain that it feels like when he states something as fact, or even states the name of the players during the lineups, it's like he's planting a stake into the ground. He sounds like a real hardened man's man. Pretty cool that I get to listen to him call this.

My dad got us tickets in the left field upper deck, I skipped school, and we sat in the sun for what I still consider to be my greatest sporting event I ever attended, and I've been to the 1971 All Star game, 1984 World Series, the 1976 NCAA Regionals and Final Four (Go Blue!!), a Men's World Cup soccer match, and the 2015 Women's World Cup Final. Got the Tigers back on track to win their first World Series since 1945, and help heal some of the wounds from the 1967 riots that tore Detroit apart. After the World Series, the following appeared on the bulletin board by the entry to school: "The faculty and administration of University of Detroit High School would like to extend condolences to all the students who lost aunts, uncles, grandparents, and other relatives during the course of the World Series." If he had been as arrogant as he was in this game and tried to get in standing up he’d have been thrown out and St. Louis would have lost. The only reason anyone even knows anything about Gibson is because of his 3-0 record in the World Series. If he’d lost Game One, there would have been no Game Seven. @@paultheaudaciousbradford6772 "The only reason anyone even knows anything about Gibson is because of his 3-0 record in the World Series." Okay, now that I stopped laughing at such an idiotic remark let me say this: He was one of the most dominate pitchers of his era. Gibson had a 1.12 ERA in 1968 and was a major reason why the mound was lowered in 1969. 13 shutouts that year. 22-9, which is hard to believe he actually lost 9 games with an ERA like that. He won 7 World Series games in a row and had a 7-2 World Series record. Was one of just a handful of pitchers who won 3 World Series games that were complete games. In fact 8 of his 9 World Series decisions were complete games. The only one that wasn't was Game 1 in 1964, he went 8 innings. Then of course there is the record that will stand forever: 17 strikeouts in a single World Series game. Along the way there were 2 Cy Young Awards and a no-hitter. Look at all his other accomplishments: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bob_Gibson#Career_MLB_statistics But his 1968 season is the second-greatest season a pitcher had ever had in my lifetime behind his former teammate Steve Carlton's 1972 season when he went 27-10 on a Philadelphia Phillies team that went 59-97. He won 46% of their games. But yeah, keep dreaming that he is only known for being 3-0 in the 1967 World Series.

All sports fans go through this 'hurt', but the grounder skipped over Javier's head for a run and Detroit scores off that when it was 3-2. Ron Davis in right did NOT come in far enough for St Louis, and the looping single fell in front of him with score 3-3, it was 4-3. A fan held up a sign behind home plate, 2006 Series, Cardinals -- Tigers: "REMEMBER 1968 WORLD SERIES" That was SOME retribution. St Louis won series, 4 - 1.

I agree, too bad for the Cardinals and too good for Tigers he didn't do it. A little overconfident about his legs and he was punished.

As much as I didn't like his not sliding, I thought the decision to not lift Lolich, and the key hits after was the turning point.

That was the most tender and beautiful rendition of the National Anthem I’ve ever heard. I’ve always liked Feliciano anyway, but he shone more than ever for this game!

Today Jose's anthem rendition is considered the best of all time second to Whitney Houston's Super Bowl version

Was a nice version but also at the time controversial. Was considered too long and Mickey Lolich complained it ruined his routine getting ready for game.

@@RobMoldovan Which, I guess, explains why Lolich did so poorly (?).

I'd still give the nod to Marvin Gaye's performance at the NBA All-Star Game in '83.

McCarver was at the game, but thankfully he was nowhere near the mic.
