Wednesday, October 9, 1968 1:00 pm (CT) at Busch Memorial Stadium in St. Louis, Missouri
Jim Northrup Had 4 Grandslams that year, Two in one game, with another following that week, to make it 3 in one week. So not to much surprises he hit one in this game! Al Kline also hit a home run in the 5th!

The story of the 1968 World Series is summed up nicely by Carey at 58:20 - "With Stanley doing nothing at all wrong at shortstop, and Al Kaline banging the ball all over, Manager Mayo Smith's move has certainly been more than justified."

I was there, 10 years old and as a tremendous Cardinals fan, couldn't stop crying after the game. This my first WS game and went with my mom, as my dad who had scored the tickets for us had to work. Thought I'd see the Redbirds win their second straight WS that day, as they were up 3-2 going in, and having beaten the Red Sox the year before. The wound up losing 3 in a row to give the Tigers their first championship in 28 years I believe. I just stopped crying 2 weeks ago, thank you very much.

Notice how the batters rarely go out of the batter box? That really speeds up the game. I can't remember the last time when a WS game was played in the daytime. Also I like having the home team broadcaster doing the play by play. Wish they do it now.

1:48:30 Kaline's home run. But first is the pitch that almost hit him. It's pretty obvious that he's kinda annoyed as he steps out of the box for a moment. I heard him talking years later, saying that the thing you need to do when a pitcher throws at you is swing hard the next pitch. A text book example of why he was so good.

McClain could/should have won 33 games during the season. His last two starts (with his arm hurting) he left both games with the Tigers ahead in the fifth inning, but the bullpen couldn't hold the lead in either game. 33-6 ...just look at that.

You would have thought that when the Tigers got that 12-0 lead they would have taken McLain out and used him for emergency relief for Game 7. Maybe the cortizone would have worn out by then.

McLain was brilliant for five years and then he was through. Gee, I wonder why? It’s crazy how many innings he pitched every year. But he wasn’t the only pitcher back then who was ruined by overwork. This was before the players had a union. They had no bargaining power. They were overworked and underpaid.

As a long-time Tigers fan, this Series was a dream for me. But if I were a Cardinals fan, I would be livid with the cheer-leading of Tony Kubek. Take his interview with Mayo Smith. He closed the interview with, something like, "We're hoping for a victory today ans then we get a seventh game." Uh, Tony, you can't root for either side.

He could always say that he enjoyed the World Series so much that he wanted it to go 7...8 if possible. Also a 7th game meant that he would be working another day,. Who doesn't want to see a Game 7, especially to see if the Tigers, who came from behind so many times during the 1968 regular season, could come from behind 3 games to 1 and pull out a World Series championship?

How big was the tag on Brock with his decision not to slide in Game 5? I remember watching it and something went through me that this was big. The Cards crossed home place twice after that out,not a productive way to win a World Series.
