My first "real" bike was a '69 Bultaco Metralla bought new in Flint, Michigan. Incredible bike in many ways. However one day I raced a similar Metralla out on Dort Highway. The other bike was running alcohol instead of gas but he outweighed me by about 80 lbs.. I was beating him as I shifted into third but I missed the shift and the engine wound up so high the flywheel exploded. A chunk about three inches across flew between my arm and the tank and flew fifty feet away. The dealer fixed the bike on warranty even though I told him the circumstances.....then Uncle Sam called me for service. Beautiful bike and super fun to ride. top speed over 105 and I believe it weighed in around 240 lbs.

Mine would go “backwards” after starting sometimes. I had a 72 model and a 450 Ducati mk 3. The Metralla was my favourite.

The sound of that engine sure brought back memories of mine. I could almost smell the Castrol through my iPad.

Thirtysome years ago I was buyin' Harley parts at the counter at HD of Sweden in Skara. There I saw they had hung some really big repro of a Bultaco Metralla MK2 picture on the wall. Shocked (I'm Spaniard) I asked about, and the ol' man at the counter told us: "Because it's the most beautiful motorcycle in history". I showed my 101% agreement, paid my bill and go.

Just got my 1966 200 out of hibernation -last on the road in 2008- and apart from a dragging clutch its fabulous, so rapid

For many years Cycle World used an image of the front brake of a Metralla at the top of their contents page, or I think it was that page. I had one for a short time around 66/67.

Wow....why is this guy riding a 1969 Bultace Metralla motorcycle while wearing 1920's era leather aviation helmet and goggles??? Btw did nobody ever teach you how to downshift? Blip the throttle and get you RPMs up before you dump the clutch...I was taught that when I was 6...Another dilettant with more money than sense... What a waste of machinery...
