I'm a Ford guy since Birth, Nothing against the Mopar,s but the 426 Hemi wasn't all that, The 426 Race Hemi,s were a World of Difference compared to the Street Version, i actually think the 440 Six Pack on the Streets would take down any Street Hemi. Like i Said Ford born and raised, i really Love the 351 Cleveland Engine built a Couple for Me and my Brother,s 85 and 86 Mustangs Street Strip Cars, we both Ran them for a Few Years, my Brother still does, Going Very Low 11,s on a Pump Gas Radial Tire Car through a Single 4150 Holley Carb. I switched up my Combo to a 460 Big Block, Going Low Nines Naturally Aspirated 4150 Carb, 275/60 Drag Radials. Nothing Special, Out of the Box Trickflow 429/460 Head's, Decent Size Solid Roller, 10.6:1 Comp. C-4 Auto No Trans Brake, 8.8 with 3.90 Gears So I'm Not Hating on the Hemi. I think One of the Most Impressive Cars from that Era was the 70 Buick Stage 1 Powerplant, Those Cars weren't exactly that Light but they Freaking Moved Out. I been in a few Muscle Cars from that Era. 69 GTO with the Ram Air 3, 70 Chevelle with the 454, Not the LS6 but i believe it was a 390 H.P. Version, All of these were Basically Stock Engines THAT were Fresh, the 454 had a Cam Little Bigger than Stock. And Many Fords. One Mustang that Really impressed me was the 1971 Boss 351, and those Model Mustangs weren't Light Weight. But that Buick 455 Was a Beast. In Stock Form Buick said 510 Ft.Lbs. Torque. I Wouldn't doubt it was Much More, and i Think it was rated at 360 H.P. THAT too was a Lie to the insurance companies back then. Like i said i will Always Bleed Ford Blue, But Second Choice will Definitely be the Monster Torque of those Buick Engines.

Vehicle weight, Horsepower, gearing, traction (slicks vs street tires) and distance travel (1/4) mile. To get a vehicle to travel the (1/4) mile in 11 seconds has to be extremely light, aerodynamic, gearing, but most of all high horsepower & high torque. NHRA pure stock class requires full chassis. To point out an important fact of power to weight-- Chrysler engines (426) and (440) are one of the heaviest engines to race so HP has to be extremely high to get into the 11 second category.

I guess I would only be feeding into the "excuses" here, but mine would be that the 'vette isn't actually a muscle car. No back seat. If I was to ignore that, then yea, weight distribution is gonna help big-time. The driver virtually sits on the rear axle with the motor mid-way in the car. Drag racers have always attempted to lighten their cars this way and that way so to act like weight isn't a heavy factor here or elsewhere is ignoring the obvious. Yea, I'm Mopar biased, but only slightly. Classic Gm's, FoMoCo's, Mopars, I dig them all. The reverence of the Hemi can't be disputed no matter if I liked them or not. Nor can a 427, 396, 428, 440, etc. This race, or any other Pure Stock Drags race with a 'Vette has a ton to do with weight distribution.

Nickey, dana, and Gibb chevrolet, put l88 427 as well as other 427s in camaros, chevelles, and novas. I've never seen any at the factory stock drags though? I would say because they would technically be tuner cars? They sold new with those engines with a warranty from performance dealers so, I think they should be allowed in if they arent. One bad thing about that though. For about the top 10 places, there wouldn't be anything else but a chevrolet. I guess that wouldn't be fair?

The street hemi was a dog in '70? Get off the crack. Street hemis just need some finessing thats all. The carbs were lean from the factory and the distributor needs recurving. Once dialed in properly, the top end charge is incredible. Mostly it comes down to preparation and the combination. The Hemi ran a 12.12 but with a really great blueprint and balance, some nice polishing of the intake and heads, running a 2200 stall, running 2.5 inch exhaust etc all within the pure stock rules the hemi will run under the 11.5 allowable et rule. In regards to the 340 versus 440 - 6 and the hemi. Eighth mile is all about weight, gearing, and fast revving. My 340 would leave on a 440 or hemi big time in the 1/8. But sorry a well prepared 440-6 and especially the hemi, would easily run by me in the last 300 feet. The deep breathing and power at the big end is too much for a small block.

this is a funny point about hemi's. Yes top fuel dragsters use a Hemi type combustion chamber. It works extremely well, hands down. That doesnt mean the whole engine combo in the late 60's and early 70's was the best. They had low compression, and a garbage camshaft. The L-88 and ZL-1 is a much more powerful package out of the box from factory. Street engine vs street engine. ZL-1 and L-88 chevys were king back in the day. And are in purestock drags today. @bigblockhitchcock read purestocksdrags comment on mine u might be right on the 73 cause thats a standard vette but purestockdrags even said the vette only weighed 3429 and the cuda weighed 3750 but the racing vettes with no ac or p steering weighed 3091 with aluminum under parts and the cuda can range from 3400 to 4000 depending on trans rear end and engine and if its got ac and power steering if the cuda has a 8 3/4 rear with a833 with hemi it weighs at 4000 with out ac.i think were both right

20 L88 optioned Vetts in 1967 80 L88 optioned Vetts in 1968 116 L88 optioned Vetts in 1969 Depending on the year, a numbers matching L88 is worth from two to three million dollars (1967) to half a million dollars or more for a 1969. So I suspect the one in the video is a clone or at least has a replacement engine. L88 an awesome engine.

I would think the 1967 L88 Vette would be the most valuable. All things equal, the 1967 Corvette is the probably worth more than any other model year. Add the fact that only 20 1967 Corvettes were built with the L88, and it's also the rarest L88 Corvette. I can't sew how the 1969 is worth twice as much, when over 5 times as many were built. This doesn't add up.......

Both ran so we'll i couldn't tell the difference. Cars are only as fast as traction, shifting and guts to hold your shift until they max out. Then I fell in Love. Yes I sold them both. Ha ha. He still owns this car today, and has ran it many times over the years at the track. It is still stock and the best it ever ran regardless of traction was in the mid-high 13 range with av. gas in the tank. That is light-years from an "11 second" ET. Get some actual experience drag racing, then come back and have an intelligent discussion.

The last I heard Bob K's hemi was still running strong and had not been apart since it left the factory. It is a good running stock engine. Very low 12's where common for stock 426's. Back in the 70's a racer here in Phoenix who went by the name "Crow" ran a Burgundy 1968 Charger R/T 426, 4 speed. He installed a set of 4.88 gears in the Dana, a set of headers, and Cragar S/S wheels with some 9-10" slicks. He didn't have a tach so he shifted by feel and the car car ran consistant 12.30's

hi there, thoses 2 engines are somewhat for 2 diferent purposes by theirs power band. the extremely rare l-88 was an engine for racing with hight rpm torque and hp, but not realy not developed too max. mclaren used that kind of engine in can-am and dominated for years! too beat them it needed a turbo used by porshe. where was dodge? with the 426 hemi or the 440 six pack ? even ford dint tryed against even ferrari failed with their 6.9liter v12.

Wow people are so surprised the Hemi lost. Are you kidding me. Apparently you don’t know crap about muscle cars. It’s an L88 vette. That motor was producing almost 600 hp back then. Had aluminum heads also. And when people say Corvettes are lite compared to the Cuda. One is fiberglass and they are not really as lite as you think. Also the Cuda is not a full frame car. It is light compared to MOST muscle cars of the era.
@SealofPerfection

What's interesting is that the Vette actually weighs a bit more, not less. A stock 69 Vette was around 3250 with a small block. Big block added a couple hundred pounds. The Cuda, despite its size, was kind of hollow, and only weighed about 3400-ish. So at best, they were roughly even weight, and in reality, the Vette was likely a bit heavier. And still outran it.

This kind of race is meaningless. We have no idea how the cars are prepared, how they are tuned or anything about them. I well tuned Hemi from back in the day should run in the 10's. On the street all bets are off. I've seem some damn fast Hemi's on the street and other ones that were dogs. Strictly because the owners had no idea what they were doing.

A stock Hemi 'Cuda with sticky tires was nowhere near the 11s "back in the day." The best they did off the showroom floor was mid-high 13s at 105-107 mph. On a sticky tire that would drop to the low-13s high-12s @ 107-108. That is with a *properly* tuned 426. They were never in the 11s on a sticky tire bone stock. The two cars featured in this vid are FAST class racers, with BIG cube engines, high compression (11.5:1+) and roller cams. The suspensions are also *very* loose to hook on bias plys.

This GTX was a complete Mopar drag pack prepped car. From the engine (426 cu. in) static compression est. 13.5, special torque converter, transmission, rear end etc. The 2x4 barrel carburetor setup was tricked out. All these parts were special heavy duty. Not every Chrysler / Dodge / Plymouth owner could get their hands on these parts easily. There is more to reaching the 11 second (1/4) mile than just placing slicks on a car. If the car runs a low 12 sec w/o slicks then it is possible.

@kennethrobinson11231 Wrong! Back in the day the fastest pure stock muscle cars were a 1970 LS6 Chevelle and a 1970 Hemi Challenger. Either one could run 13.1 right off the show room floor if the driver knew what he was doing. (Actualy the 1969 ZL1 Corvettes were faster but there were only two of them everbuilt) The 427s were not slouches but the LS6 and the Hemi were the ones to beat. Oh and yes, I was there too.

we'll never know because the kid I bought it off put a 440 crank in it (so he said) which also bit the dust when the piston skirt let go at about 7 grand. I was just beginning my mechanical career at the time and listened with great faith to the guy I bought it off. Wishful thinking of the youth. Actually the car was a 66 as I remember,it had a belvedere 2 body (shorter)with satellite trim and interior. They only made 500 of them to homoglat the car for racing in a stock class. I had moved to los angeles for two years and learned a great deal more about engine rebuilding but when I returned back to boston my father had given the car away because it was leaking fluids on the driveway and sitting high in the air with the exhaust on the ground. It was an embarasment to the neighborhood. A pity since the car had only 1200 miles on it in 72(only drag raced) and looked and even smelled brand new inside. I had taken it apart to inspect the damage and left off the heads as I gave up for lack of cash. Perhaps he had also installed the 12 to one pistons but they were chrysler slugs so I figuared they were original. Never buy a car run on nitromethane was the lesson I learned the hard way
