The Cuda only has the 10.25:1 compression 426 Street Hemi. The L88 is a full race engine. Also a Corvette is a lot lighter than a Cuda. Put the 12.5:1 compression 426 Race Hemi up against the 12.5:1 compression L88 and were talking an entirely different outcome. That would be more of an even matchup.

Actually they are pretty close in weight. And notice the Vette was detuned to 11:1, so not much compression difference, either.

Hemi's never were 'off-the-line' motors, they were originally designed to compete at high rpm's. If I'm not mistaken, PSMCDR allows gear swaps. A 4:56 outback in a Hemi should get the elephant moving right quick, then it's all over once that Hemi tachs over 4k.

Not really........this was pretty common for cars like these two. If you look at the specs........you quickly realize the cars matched up for this race were two of the very best offerings for drag racing back then. Today you can buy the best offerings and they are quicker still.....but where the new cars REALLY SHINE vs these older models is found in how they have better street manners. To get a low 11 second 1/4 mile out of that old L88 Corvette required an engine that got abysmal gas milage and those 4.56:1 rear gears would have made for the most miserable driving experience on the highway you could imagine. We've come a long way from here. A standing quarter mile acceleration alone is nice to brag about when you go this fast.......but it's a long way from the only way to measure today vs yesterday. Today's cars aren't nearly as cool or legendary.......but they sure as hell are much better cars.

All you crying MoPar people. Street Hemi were not all that fast. Back then Street Hemi cars were not winning at the drag strip. They were 12:80 cars. Some were low 13's. I ran beside a many of them. They had a strong top end. A 440 would bust them every time. I've seen Olds W-30 get them, Buick GS get them, 427 / 425 Chevs would beat them about every time. So what I'm saying here is. If the hemi was stock and not any real work done to them they were just another good running car. You had to spend money to get them to really run. This was in the late 60's and into the 70's. Most of you all weren't even born. I was there at the strip and the back roads of the time. I even beat one with a GTO at Bluegrass drag strip in 1969. I pulled him out of the hole and he did make a strong comeback but at the end I held him off. I'm not even talking the L-88 because nobody had one around here.

I had a friend who ran an acid dipped 440 GTX on the street (Front Street Phill)y and on the drag strip. He told he would kill a hemi on the street, however when he ran on the strip, he would come out on them, but they would motor by him on the top end, He would call Sox and Martin for the latest tips. kennethrobinson11231 at a nascar track the Hemi dominated in 1969 and 1970 so ford protested and threatened to drop nascar so nascar banned the Hemi for 1971 because Ford was tired of losing to the Chrysler Hemi and Chevy wasn’t competitive back then it was always Plymouth, Dodge and now and then Ford would win but Chevy never won and rarely finished top 10.

You could also think about it this way. Much safer making a few passes down the strip than you are driving these things in traffic nowadays with all the idiots on the roads. I know I'm much more relaxed at the strip than the street because of that. Also keep in mind we aren't doing 7000 rpm clutch dumps with slicks on the back. These stock street tires will spin with too much throttle, you have to finess these things out of the hole, so in reality this type of racing is relatively easy on driveline parts. I've never broken anything with stock tires on the car.

They something to behold as they look like you went back in time to the muscle car era as all the cars look like they just came off the dealership lots and some can run quicker than Super/Gas 9.9 times and look stock with complete interiors, stock size tires for that year and the stock looking exhaust system for that year. They all have,for the block and head combination, mountain motors that idle like the stock engine and NO NITROUS! If they catch you with it you’re banned for life. They really should incorporate them into the U.S. Nationals and run them on Friday or Saturday as a lot of people are unaware of these cars.

camirocz....You're DEAD WRONG. These cars do make the numbers. ALL STOCK. That's the whole point of this "Stack class" racing. What these guys are running for cars in this video are far from typical back in the day. The cars are the very fastest of their day and the rules do allow for gears that were stock and available yet almost nobody ordered them for their own street car because they would be just about worthless and miserable on the street.
@Dogboy1960
@Dogboy1960 7 жыл бұрын
Yup......I"m less than familiar with Chrysler products .....but Chevy's BEST 427 ever easily made these numbers if a driver/owner knew what he was doing. There are actual written and photographed stories of Vince Piggins himself attending testing in 1969 of a 2 speed power-glide ZL1 Camaro running mid-11s with horrible traction issues. The writer of the story speaks getting a chance to pilot a ZL1 powered Corvette down the 1/4 mile the next day at a press event done by Chevrolet to introduce Chevy performance for 1969.....with a 3 speed automatic running only slicks for traction and it made it into the 10s. He claimed the car was repeatedly making the numbers "with idiots at the wheel". The L88 is identical to the ZL1....itis the same engine with an iron block. So what you see in the video is not at all surprising......or at least it shouldn't be.

k w that E body weighed 3750. That is an iron head and block Hemi with a cast iron intake. He can up the compression 1.5 points to 11.75 total, and Bob has his own special cam specs, otherwise, just a careful assembly and attention to detail. The only Cudas under 3500 lbs have small blocks in them.

@firebirdjone
@firebirdjone 8 жыл бұрын
You're allowed any gear you wish per rules. So naturally you run what fits the combo best. Of course you experiment as well. Most of these owners know what works for their car, and Bob has been running his mopars since the 80's that I can remember. I'm sure he picked the 4.10's for that particular car because that is what works best for him. There are some other hemi's in the class that run more gear in the 4.30-4.56 range.
@acemaster1001

the 1970 cuda runs a 4.33 gear now. the hydrallic cam hemi wont have the rpm ability as a solid lifter L88. The hemi is all done around 6500. A L88 will enjoy 7000-7200

I'm not so sure the vette is lighter just because it has fiberglass panels. They have one hell of a frame under them. I've had 3 of these things with big blocks, and the last one I had tipped the scales at 3700 lbs. without me in it. Not exactly light weight. I'm willing to bet the cuda isn't heavier, and most likely that E-body is a tad lighter.

vettes weigh in at 3400. The cuda is 38-3900
@firebirdjone
@firebirdjone 7 жыл бұрын
Not what I meant. When I say fiberglass panels, that is in fact referring to the body, which are panels glued together (if you've ever blown one of these apart) The vette in question is not an all alloy 427. It's an L88 that has an iron block with aluminum heads. My comment still stands. All 3 of the BBC C3 corvettes I had scaled well over 3600 lbs., with one that was a shade over 3700. If the L88 here in question does in fact weight only 3400, then it needs to be looked at closer because the only weight reduction legal in PS is removing sound deadener. I've also never seen an E-body cuda scale 3800+. Maybe close when loaded with options, which this one is not.
