Breaking in the cam on the new 225. Yes that is a Chevy alternator and GM HEI unit above the coil. The one thing Mopar could never get right was the electrical systems!
You can see what the truck currently looks like here.... customgearhead....

Why wouldn't it be? The slant is a great enging that can give you the best of both worlds, good gas mileage and awesome performance! The whole truck has since been redone since this video. Paint is now cream with a gold flake roof, overdrive 4 speed, 3.91 gears and a new slant with a 268 cam, 4bbl intake, motorcraft 2150 2bbl carb, headers, ported head, 60 overbore and is still my year round daily driver!

If there is anything thing that disappointments me it is to lift the hood of a custom vehicle and see just another small block chevy . A V8 makes perfect sense if you're building strictly a race car but there is no reason not to pack a six shooter if you are building a street machine or daily driver .

I don’t see but one exhaust pipe! It really needs the duals, the sound is just superb and different. If no one epunderstands why it’s running for so long, back in the day, getting it cranked and letting it run for a while, gets the rings to seat/seal, and after that, the engine is a great start after that.

There was a OHC engine recently that showed up on slantsix.org that had been in the Michigan State University lab for years. The builder was an engineer for Chrysler in the late 60's and ended up buying it back from MSU and then put it on ebay. I know of a few other OHC set ups that were home brewed. In Argentina Augusto Cicaré made a few for Formula SP racing along with a few 4 valve heads. heck out the link for pics and info on the OHC engine... www.slantsix.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=52767&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0

Offy has been making a 4bbl intake for the slant since the 60's. The Stock hyperpacks are neat but you can buy a new one from Clifford or a better version from Aussie Speed called the Hurricane. I also have a 3 SU carb intake for a slant, a 3 Weber side draft intake, and the very first Hilborn fuel injection unit ever built for a slant. The Hilborn unit was also the very same one that was on the Dragmaster Dart Six rail back in 1964.

I actually decided not to run the holley because this truck is my yearcround daily driver. I was running a 400 cfm carter off a buick then I had an eddy 500 but now I have found carb nirvana by running an adaptor plate on the offy 4bbl intake and have a motorcraft 2150 2bbl with vacuum advance off a 351-400 ford. My performance dropped a little (street driven with an overdrive 4 speed and 3.23's right now) but my gas mileage doubled! It should improve even more once I swap over to the 3.91's.

I want to drive the car. I have been working on cars for close to 40 years. The factory MOPAR ballast resisted electronic ignition was the worst of the Big 3. Then they decided to improve and go with the Lean Burn ignition. It was so 'Lean' that you had to walk to work. It was so bad people went back to points. True hot rodders go with what is proven and what works. Each to their own. I don't care what others think.

Little update. I pulled this motor and dropped in a bigger slant six. The new one is a 225 that has been bored 60 over, clifford 268 cam, ported head, ported Offy intake, 500cfm Eddy carb that has been dropped down to 400cfm, headers, the 3 on the tree was replaced with a overdrive 4 speed and we are going to paint next month! It will be a flat vanilla with a gold metal flaked roof. It will also be getting a 4 link with a new airbag set up. I have all the parts to do it I just need some time.

How would I go about making an exhaust manifold for the 225? I have one that I need a manifold for. It came off of a Hesston windrower.
@peters8758
@peters8758 5 жыл бұрын
That long exhaust manifold casting often cracks near the center. I've heard... find two broken exhaust manifolds and a good welding guy. Front 3 cyls collect into one unit, rear 3 get the other. Send the exhaust down thru 2 pipes and join 'em under your feet. This avoids competition between the front & rear banks for the same exit hole. Be careful that the choke heater can still function or do a coolant choke mod. Also look at your carb layout. Front cyls are getting best mixture from primaries, rear cyls could be running lean till the secondaries open up. Look at spark plugs after a while to confirm this. It might run better with a Holley 500cfm 2-bbl, installed sideways so butterflies open along block axis. That Holley 2-bbl ran great on my AMC Pacer, gave it stump-pulling low end torque. Your 4-bbl could theoretically give better breathing above 6000rpm, but get real, 225's won't rev that high! Sell the 4-bbl & pick up that 2-bbl cheap. It might even fit onto a Plymouth Volare 2-bbl Super Six intake (designed for wagons to help torque), but avoid any Volare lean-burn Carter carb.

Robert Cabrales I always do the HEI swap. Been doing it for the last 22 years on all my mopars. Goto slantsix dot org and look up "hei swap". There are plenty of guys doing it. All you need is a 73 and up slant six electronic distributor, 4 pin gm hei unit from a late 70's chevy and a MSD Blaster 2 or equivalent coil (hei will kill a stock coil after a short time). Doing this swap lets you get rid of te crappy factory ignition box and ballast resistor. All you need is a 12v "hot" wire off the ignition switch. I also get rid of the factory charging system and run either a gm "one wire" or Mitsubishi alternator. Both are internally regulated and work better than any factory mopar stuff.

Years ago I got to have lunch with William Weetamen and he told us all about the different versions they were playing with at the end, diesel slant, turbo slant, fuel injected slant. I know there were 100 factory aluminum slant heads made by Chrysler and when they ordered them all destroyed (as Chrysler liked to do) only 3 made it out into the world and are accounted for. No crossflow head for the slant has been made to work on a slant but there have been a few 4 valve and overhead cam heads done. The boys down in Argentina have done some awesome stuff in their slant race cars.

You should get a glass pack, last time I had one of those mufflers like yours in this video, my slant six backfired and blew the muffler 1ft open. Awesome job on the engine build + H.E.I though!

That bracket was one for a chevy street rod that I modified, it didn't work very well so I made a new one and used another cheap parts store one for a chevy. The alt is just a basic 70's chevy truck one, they are like 30 bucks at your local store and charge 1000% better than anything mopar ever made. Goto photobucket and search for user "360scamp" the folder is "1969 Dodge Truck" it won't let me post a link here for some reason.

You are knocking Mopar electronics and then show the nightmare of wiring harness you have. Lol

This was a week after I bought the truck. First thing I did was drop in the engine and start fixing all the lame ass rat rodder bullshit the previous owner did (like the hack job on the rear suspension, dumbass clown car paintjob and interior). The wireing was cleaned up later. The truck is now a cream white with a gold flaked roof and 59 Oldsmobile cluster molded into the stock dash.

And it still ran and charged better with the GM stuff than it ever did with the factory mopar electronics. I have been running GM ignition and charging systems in my mopars for over 25 years and they always work better than any of the random boxes cluttering up the engine bays of any mopar.

This was right after I bought it and started fixing everything the previous owner did to it (engine died on the way home, shitty "air ride" in the rear, retarded dumbass rat rod paint job). I painted it white with a gold flake roof, threw in another, faster slant, daily drove it for 5 years then sold it to my buddy who dropped in a smallblock. It is going to end up with a crown vic front suspension as soon as he is done with his cuda.

It sounds like that engine needs to be idled down. It sounds like it's trying to run away with it self. Me myself chevy is my first choice my second is dodge. So I got love for dodge.

It was a brand new engine when this was filmed. This was the cam break in. You start the engine, set the idle about 2200rpm and run it for20 minutes. After that you change the oil, inspect the filter for any signs of failed bearings, install a new filter, run it for 100 miles, change oil/filter, run it for 500 miles,change oil/filter then beat on it. This is what should be done for any freashly rebuilt engine. That is why the idle is set so high. Diesel engines are the ones that "run away", gas engines just stop working, start knocking or put a window in the side of the block.

I didn't know that it was a fresh engine. I know that diesel engines are the ones that runs away. I was being sarcastic. Lol. As in it was going to jump out of the truck and run away. How many horsies do you think it's got?
