@@RobsMusicBox this is true as the straight sixes were/are very popular esp in Argentina where the Ford Falcon is an icon. I have heard the same thing about these multivalve conversion heads but, because they aern't 750 hp engines, like US racing V8's, there isn't much mention.

Great video and killer results, but that reversion is something else. I had no idea it would be that severe. Probably a combination of reverse flow head and the short runner exhausts. Much food for thought now...thanks!

That was impressive. I have traveled at least 150,000 miles behind that nifty little six. For many years my get to work cars were either Valiant or Duster with the six. I live in Wisconsin in the north of America and the winters could be really cold in January in the 1970's. I have no idea how many times my rusty old Valiant slant six fired right up after sitting out in minus 10 F weather but some newer cars would not. I would drive my humble little car around and offer jump starts to much newer cars. They would look in amazement at it. Starters were not nearly so reliable back then, but thank God they were right there and easy to get at. I kept a spare in the trunk and could swap one in less then five minutes. Then I would repair the defunct one in a few days. They were rugged and dependable. They saved me a lot of money on travel expenses. I never dreamed I would see one make that much HP. They salt the roads here in winter so unfortunately the cars get rusty. I had to put a section of plywood in the trunk to keep the spare tire from falling out. I even used pop rivets and metal flashing to patch holes in the floor under my feet. The body would rot away but that tough little engine just kept on going.

I've heard of keeping spare radiator hoses, fan belts, spark plugs & points in the boot, but not a spare starter motor. Most are just too hard to get at if you're stuck on the side of the road with a dud starter. Obviously, the slanty has the starter on the upper side of the motor.

I know a man I hunted with (Sam Walton of Wal-Mart fame!) who put over 460,000 MILES on a 225 Slant Six in a Grey D150 Pick-em-up with a Torque-Flite! He parked it when the frame rusted enough it "hogged" or bent and bound-up the drive-shaft. He replaced it with his famous (used) red 360 V-8 Power-Wagon 4WD pick-up, I think he had until he died for a huntin'/fishin' truck. I used to drive over from Tulsa to Bentonville (first when he STILL had the Western Auto Store) and quail and Spring Turkey hunted with him. I never got a turkey, but got some quail with his Brittany Spaniels in upland Ozarks brush. He was one heck-of-a-fine-man.

My Dad was in sales in the early 60's. He was driving as much as 60K miles a year. For much of that he was driving a Dodge and a Plymouth Valiant with slant sixes. He told me he stopped at an auto scrap yard one time and the owner showed him a large warehouse with slant sixes stacked on pallets almost to the roof. They were salvage from wrecks and the guy told Dad there was no demand for them because they just didn't wear out.

When I got out of high school, I serviced commercial two way radios. That slant six was the most popular taxi cab engine. At that time I drove a Fury with a 318. The 318 was one of those indestructible engines.

The 225 slant 6 AND the old Valiant car are both almost direct imports from the USA. Certainly nothing unique about them, except for minor changes to suit AU conditions, Right Hand Drive, etc.

it’s cool to see someone utilizing a slant-6 in their ride, as opposed to LS-Swapping, Crate Motoring, or another 6 to 8 cylinder conversion. there’s absolutely nothing wrong with either, as I’m a ‘whatever makes you happy, do it’ kind of guy. it’s just rare that people set out rebuilding their Slants for performance, though this upload will no doubt open some eyes & minds to giving their Slants another chance at life. too cool, Dudes..too cool. these are great times.

The red motor was in forklifts, concrete agitators and too many other uses to mention. Mind you they were both awesome donks. The "red" was huge in power boats or ski boats but I always wondered how the old slant would go in a boat. I think they would have been great.

I love the motors. They were so smooth and powerful yet economical right out of the factory. But nobody generally did anything cool with them in the US. They just left dad's car alone. V8s got all the love from the hot rodders. Glad to see this fine piece of motor craft being appreciated.

As far as the slant six goes you are right but I couldn't get better that 15 mpg in a 65 dart. I had gotten a slant six convertible and a 318 wagon. The 318 got 17-18 mpg. Hell my ford 390 had better mpg. It was the only downside with them, worse mileage and horsepower.

@@Joshualbm well I had a 64 galaxie with the 390 and on road trips, I could get 19 mpg. I know that sounds insane but that's what it got. I would take the slant six occasionally back and forth from Portland and Seattle and it would 15 mpg. Th hats when my interest faded on slate sixes

In Australia the other Chrysler Six the 265 ci Hemi was the top performance option , in the Aussie Chargers , the V8 s were second option ,

The reason for that was even sinking as much money as they did for the one in the video, it only does 243hp on the crank. High performance just isn't what this engine is for, it's like expecting a fish to climb a tree. It's meant to be a reliable and long lasting engine for utility work.

Just had my slant rebuilt for my 85 dodge truck. Love the slant,it’s a very special engine. It’s ready for another 30 years of dependable service. I had a '71 Duster with a 225 slant 6 and a 727. It was a beater overall, but man was it reliable, and generally easy-peasy to work on. Like to have another (nicer) one, whether with a 225 or a V8.

Thank you for your hard work on the 225! The motor is probably the best thing ever to come out of the factory. I had a 61 Valiant SW that I did a complete down to the nuts and bolts resto on and put the slant six back in it (after some serious massages 🤭) The car was the ultimate sleeper,no it was a sleeping Giant! Now mind you; the build was done back in the day before you could "chip up"your performance qualities,but I sure had a ton of good times getting the "Hot rods"pissed off by putting them to shame with a quick reaction and that monster torque when I went out front of them and held my own all the time. 50 yeas ago in the US, six cylinder engines were popular because for a young male you got a much better insurance rate. While in school , I remember these engines in teenagers cars. The most popular was that slant six and the Ford 300.

Clyde Norwood of Precision Engines Waxhaw NC. USA built an almost stock 225 that developed about that horsepower range but developed 550 ft lbs of torque. He retired shortly thereafter. (Almost stock with a turbo charger). Great job guys, thanks for sharing.

You should look up what in Argentina we do with straight sixes from Dodge, Ford, Chevrolet, and the Cherokee 4.0 from the Jeep. Imagine hearing a 60s nova or Falcon screaming at 8k rpm from a straight 6

Probably the single best engine Chrysler ever had. Our family's best of many went 350K. Only major repair beyond maintenance was a water pump. And still running when it went to the scrap yard.

Very close to a Slant-6 I built for my Plymouth Valiant when I lived in France. Of course, at the time, Slant-6 performance parts were only available in Australia. Mine had 2 major differences ; a 600cfm 4-bbl Edelbrock carburettor with an AussiSpeed equal-length runner intake manifold and more accessories (power steering pump, air-conditioning compressor).

My wife-to-be taught school in a little town in the north of the Canadian province of Alberta. In those days the attendants filled your tank and checked your oil. One guy comes running up and says: Miss, you better come here right away - you engine is falling out! So she runs up front and sure enough - there it is leaning over. The gas station towed her back to the dealer where the mechanics and he destroyed themselves in laughter. She drove 30 miles to nother gas station ever after. 😍😍😍 God bless her memory.

Awesome slant. I have a VF Pacer that sadly the body is 2 far gone, but I had a local engine builder put my Slant together many years back and added triple 45 Webers to it. It has in the vicinity of 240 hp. Not as potent as this one but still a nice performing engine.

I have seen a Mopar parts book with part numbers for all Chrysler engines. Each section shows what parts you need to make different horsepower, so slant six- from 225 hp- 1100 HP, Chrysler's engineers figured out the parts for each engine an the HP you would like, I'm not kidding, I obtain manuals from a dealership that was closing, I eventually gave it to a friend.

225ci = 3.68L Nice engine. Inline6 engines always sound smoother then any Xplane V8. It would be fun to compare this engine to what can be done with a Jaguar XK 3.8L engine from the same era. The XK has an alu Xflow head, dohc and half spherical combustion chambers and a similar exhaust setup.

I love how you Aussies go heavy on the duration and compression! nice to see. The long-stroke, small-bore begs for that kind of duration lift. I like the exhaust headers but they must really heat the intake!

My dad got a dodge 150 pickup the last year they put the slant 6 in that pickup. That truck still started and ran at 232,000 miles when he sold it. It was a true truck; no air, no power steering, no power windows, AM radio only. You couldn't kill that thing!

This isn’t so wild, HOT ROD magazine did similar builds back in the early 60s. Ah, thé great old days of experimentation and hot ridding. Back then, no matter where, whomever won on Sunday, be it a drag or oval win, that sold on Monday. There were many people from Cana,Virginia, that had many, many hot Fords. My dad had a 225, slant six in his Ve Valiant ute. It was a three on the tree. I remember going for drives in it as a family on the weekends. When there was four of us in it, I would be sitting right next to him and occasionally he would punch me up the chin when he put it into second gear ! Ha, I remember I learnt to drive in it too when I was a young kid. It never slowed down up hills in 2nd gear even going slow. It had sump loads of torque from the long stroke motor.

They are bullet proof at stock output. We don't see many long term daily driver 250 hp slant sixes. I think the camshaft oil pump gear is a potential issue at high output. I'd be super happy with 180 hp in mine.

Excellent use of the Webers to get the most out of the little Mopar slant six. I ran 42 DCOE Webers on cross-ram intakes mounted on a small block Chevy some 20+ years ago and the results were super. It took a lot of experimentation to get the correct manifold length and proper volume in the velocity tubes to get the best hp/torque out of your engine. Again, good job on the slant 6!

I am currently working on that right now on a 302 in my mustang. I have lots of Webbers kicking about from my many years of building Datsuns. How I wound up with a 67 Mustang convertible is is a whole other story.

@@donziperk Webers would be beautiful on a 302......I've thought about putting some on my 302 Bronco for a long time. If you are considering the same you could more easily find a down draft manifold than a side draft. I just got lucky back in the day to find the cross-ram set-up. You could also put Del Ortos on such a manifold as they are basically an improved and less expensive Weber. You could use the Webers or Del Ortos and change the chokes(venturis) to get the size for air flow correct and then mess with the jet stack until you get them where you want the carb to perform. The beauty of either carb is that you can pull the jet stack(mains, idle, emulsion tubes, etc all in one easy turn of the wrench. There are several companies that sell the entire set-up for a king's ransom and they come pretty close to right on the button for mixture control. Good luck and Keep the Faith, Tom P.S. They still make the Shelby Weber intake and IDAs or IDFs...I forget which carb works better. Summit Racing sells the entire set up for about $2500 and you would barely have to get your hands dirty. It is fuel injection that looks like Webers.......Part #: 1-148-011 for 260, 289, 302 for Fords. Just hook up to your computer and go for a drive to tune 'em up.

@@tomnekuda3818 I’ve tuned Dellortos Webers and Mikuni Solex most of my life life and I love them. Yes IDAs would be nice but I’m trying to keep the height profile low. I might even consider a Jim Inglese 8 stack system. But for now I’m going to try to use what I have. As far as jetting and choke selection I have a fairly large collection so It just a matter of getting the manifold and designing a good linkage system. The driveability will be great and the sound will be music to the ears. That slant six sure sounded nice. Always liked those engines.

Thanks for video and appreciate knowing all the specs. Long time straight six fan. My first new car was a 1980 4spd manual 250 c.i. 6 cyl Ford Granada coupe. Torquey & super reliable.

For 40 years the inline six was the mainstream American motor. They provided exceptional smoothness and usable torque at an economical cost. And so easy to maintain.

Back when I was young and traveled all over the country I did it in a 69 dodge van with a super 225 and three on the tree.. I bet when it died it had five hundred thousand on it.. one of the best motors I've owned.. now my gen two Cummins in my 2500 01 is pushing 400 thousand and still runs great and is pushing a close second for next best!

My 1965 100 1/2 ton has the original 225 Slant Six that has 240,000 miles...my Grandfather left it to me when he passed in 1998

The slant 225 is the best 6 cylinder that Chrysler ever made, I'm a 265 fan but there is no doubt that the slant 225 is as close as bullet proof there was back in the day!!!!

Nice use of the herb and spice rack in this moparmaniac. Nothing beats a dyno tuning to squeeze the tube of every last ounce of power. I wish the engine owner a lot of fun with this one. Hope the build is a 'Sleeper'.. with the number plate BLINK. 👍😀🇦🇺 Great stuff Glen .

Always have loved the 225 Slant! I had a couple of them, one in a 64 Dart and another in a 70 Duster. Awesome bullet proof engines IMO. Would love to see you take the Mighty little 273 HiPo and work your magic on that one! Thanks for sharing. Cheers from Motown.

Nice engine - always had respect for those engines in the AP5 Valiants with that push button auto. I was used to driving various EH 179's then I drove a slant six Valiant and it changed my perception of the monsters.

Great Work and documentation John! This is basically the same level of power my super complex Honda 3.5 makes from a dead simple easier to live with economical 50 year old design - just goes to show what tuner knowledge, good parts and a little bit of time can do.
