We had a 68 2000. I was 11 when my dad brought it home. I thought it was the ugliest thing ever. Like a weird looking Karmann Ghia. But it grew on me. Sadly he sold it before I turned 16 and I never got to drive it. Seeing this almost made me cry. Same exact color and style. Beautiful work

I bought a 2000 on Christmas Eve, 1969, the silver with black top and interior. It was a great car to drive, but sadly leaked like a sieve when it rained. We put a luggage rack on the trunk and hung tent, poles and sleeping bags on the back and drove it from Pennsylvania to Prince Edward Island in 1970 almost non-stop. Started at 6:00 am and arrived at the Cape Tormentine ferry at 11:00 pm Atlantic Time, 1,000 miles. The car was bullet-proof, but the rocker panels rusted out in 18 months and we ended up trading it with 50,000 miles for a 240Z in 1972. The Z wasn't near as much fun and it broke my heart to let the 2000 go. The 2000s did very well in SCCA D Production for years.

Pretty cool. Based on the comments that have already been made, here are my thoughts: 1. Have driven a 1600 and it was a complete blast. Always wanted a 2000 and this one is a beauty. 2. It's overpriced. Beautifully restored, but you can find them at 90% of what was done here for less than half the price. You can actually get a Midget at 75% of the restoration of this car for less than $8,000. 3. Don't be misled by the "paltry" 135 HP. These cars are FAST. The braking is incredible and when you corner at high speed the feeling and control you have is amazing. 4. Had a friend who was a mechanic for a state patrol police and he took one of these across the state of New Mexico and crossed the entire state in some unbelievable time. I worked the numbers and it looks like he ran border-to-border at and average of 96 MPH. Pretty cool!

My first husband restored these. They were so amazing. I went from Northern Virginia to Manchester NH over 500 miles on one tank of gas! and in record time. I drove one that was painted corvette yellow, loved that car.

I had a 69 that I bought in 70, just like this one (silver but black int & top), it also had a removable hard top with a round window on the sides. dphotos says "1969 model was 0-60 in 8.4 seconds with a top speed of 108". My wife got a ticket in mine for 120 mph+ in a 70, and it took a long time for him to catch up with her, he figured she was doing in the 130 mph range. It had the factory twin carb kit in it that gave it an extra 15 hp, that is why you see some with 150 hp tag on them, instead of 135. My insurance payment was $15.00 a month more than the car payment, but it was very fast for the day and a ball to drive.

I got mine up to the 120 mph/125mph range also.......but I could never balance the carbs correctly, so I never got it above that.

My mother had one of these in the end of the 70's which she bought used and a little rough. With no stomach for keeping up with the maintenance, she sold it and bought a '74 Alfa GTV. Great little car.

I had a 60yo gentleman bring me his for a retro audio upgrade and an alarm system with door locks... After a week of work we had to Ferris it, if you know what I mean... What a blast. The owner was ok with it and it really was a great handling car.

Well, my father also drove this car. I do remember I had to squeeze myself behind the front seats, I don't remember if there were actual heat in the back or not. I was just a kid so I had no idea how cool of a car this thing was.

The US market car was watered down a bit, the Australian delivered cars had the more aggressive cam profile and 150HP with the twin Solex/Mikuni 44's on it. Really great car, raced quite successfully in Australia too. Would give early 911's a run for their money!

yes a fun car , but a peaky engine with those big carbs, and harsh ride; the 240Z that came a long a couple of years later felt like a much more modern car, and a lot less work to drive fast.

Your missing the circular air filter and red cover. The valve cover was painted as the OEM is bare aluminum that had a clear coat on it. The Chevy Citation used the verticals radio and fits as well. These have real glass in each gauge and can be removed to be cleaned, both sides. Not only did I work on these at the dealer during the 70’s into 82, these styling clues were used to design the rest of the entire “Z” car line starting with the 240 Z in 1970. I own a frame off restoration 1969 1600 Roadster and the come with full perimeter welded box frame, unlike the MG, MG-B or Spitfire. If you lifted them on the hoist, you could not open the doors. You can on the Datsun.

Ya theres a little of things wrong with his comments. Ram air lol, no it directs the air onto the radiator top tank. Should be a deflector under the car directing air onto the lower radiator tank. Dual masters were mandatory in the US in 66 in all cars. The rear panel is not finished correctly, it should roll into the flat section the tail lights mount on. To be fair many restorations miss that detail.

Interesting. I didn't know that about Datsun/Nissan. Japan is still called Nippon (Neepoan) here in Japan. And the derogatory slang derived from Japan is more commonly known here as well. I wonder if the derogatory term from Nippon was more common in the 60s?

"Overpriced"? A very similar '68 Silver/Red Roadster, with the less-desirable 1600 engine, sold for $50,000 last year at auction in Amelia Island. BTW, this car is a '68, not a '69, as evidenced by the lack of side marker lights. Also, for a guy so concerned about originality, the painted valve cover is a disaster, as is the non-orange/missing air cleaner box. Did I mention his guys glued the trunk weatherstrip incorrectly (supposed to be on the lid)? All things considered though, very nice car.

nice catch, I saw all of that ,too.and more. definitely a 68, although it could have been sold as a 69. they did that with left over inventory.
@donziperk
@donziperk 7 ай бұрын
@@RobertSmith-un4ts Correct on the registration, also the rear panel is not done correctly. It should curve into the area that holds the tail lights and then be parallel to the back of the car. And the tach and soeedo are not correct only the Solex model had the higher number values on them. Air cleaner is wrong as is the painted black valve cover.

I had the same year, same color exterior but black interior. Comment below is accurate. Black Nissan V/C = ughh. I also had tonneau cover with zip. In my dotage I recall white colored lens covers and back up lights that hung below the rear bumper? Mine had Empi mags which made the wheels look quite muscular. The car was very fast and would eat most Triumphs and Fiats on the road at the time. 5 speed transmission meant the engine was loafing at freeway speeds. That '69 SRL311 and my '58 VW Camper Van are the only cars I regret not keeping to this day. Tom B.

Reliable? I don't know if that's fair to say. My Dad had one brand new and I remember it always being in the shop. One time it took a whole month to get a part and he ended up driving his sister's 1958 Dodge to work every day. It was in 1969 and the parts distribution system for Datsun was sadly lacking on the East Coast of the USA. The dealers were all poorly capitalized and didn't have very good trained mechanics. After 3 years of ownership, my Dad ditched it. The side carbs were impossible to adjust too if I recall. We loved it as kids, but as a daily driver in the day, it sucked.

It is a nice car. 1969 model was 0-60 in 8.4 seconds with a top speed of 108. Hagerty rates a class 1 show car at 32,000 and he wants 38,000. An experienced judge would have to rate this to make it a class one. This might be an upper class 2. He should not bash British cars. A Triumph TR4 has 110 HP and has more resale value in the collectors market than a Datsun 2000.

135 hp is supposed to be fast? That's much less power than average these days.
@MadnessOfMarmots
@MadnessOfMarmots 10 жыл бұрын
Yes it is, but these cars are very light. He said less than 2,000 pounds. That's extremely light, so those 135 horses are better used and the torque ratio is higher. 135 horsepower in a light car will feel much faster and be faster than 135 horsepower in a modern day car.

you would be supprised.....they 2000`s top out at 100 mph in 3rd gear with a 5 speed trans,and there was an optional 150 hp version with dual solex sidedraft carbs. i had a done up 1600 for 13 years and it would beat all of my buddies american muscle cars across intersections,and there was nothing that could touch it for cornering.....handled like a gokart cheers

That's equivalent to a larger 3500lb car with 240hp. But, for example, a Mustang is 3500lbs with 300 hp, with V6, or >435 with V8.

I own a '70 Datsun 1600 Fairlady Roadster. It is rated at 95 hp and I've taken it on the interstate doing 80 mph at 4,000 rpm with 2,000 rpm more to go to redline. It didn't shake and the steering was smooth. The only concern I had was whether I'd be going airborne! HA!

well, 124mph, was pretty fast in the 60's. it would beat, mgb , 912, tr4, most 4 cyl. of the day. the road test said it would do 40mph in 1st, 60mph in 2nd, 100mph in 3rd, with 2 gears left.

Its a beauty but not really correct. Air box missing, rear back up light should hang below bumper, who painted the valve cover. It should be polished aluminium. I had a 69, loved it but it was painful driving in the city with potholes. Motor trend mag. Said the ride was Buck board bouncy, they were correct.....
