I bleed Ford Blue, but have much respect for the Olds. I was driving my buddy's '71 442 one evening when we some how got in a race with a '69 Gran Prix. When I pulled out to pass the speedo needle was straight down and looked up and saw another car coming head on. With my buddy talking to Jesus, somehow I managed the pass before we collided. Don't know where that car or the Gran Prix went, but we stopped at a store about a mile down the road and were so nervous we both fell out of the Olds. This was back in the mid 70's, never tried that again. That 442 was fast!

Well they came in Fastback too. That's what throws people off. Not only that but the coupe looks more like a 69 Galaxie than what people think of Fairlane. With that said, Ford also confused people when they introduced the Torino, it was more of just a different trim level than the Fairlane. Take the chrome off and you have the same blank car.

Great coverage, almost no one knows Cobra was not marketed as a Torino in '69.(yeah I have the Sportsroof) One flub, they were more of a Fairlane base model vs the 500. Only std F-500 items, rear trim around tail lights and deck lid, plus carpet(bottom rung Fairlane used rubber mat). Std seats, door panels etc were all base Fairlane(same used in Talladega). Wheel well mouldings were actually from Torino GT. F-500 did have trim but was part of the F-500 only body side moulding. Black out grille & Cobra badging were unique to Cobra.

I love those pre-1971 cars before the detuning and emissions junk. I had a 1973 Mach 1 with a 351 Cleveland (2V); however, it only had 266 hp at the flywheel, but still was fun to drive. It had plenty of what my friends who rode with me called "pick up" from like 10 to 60 mi/hr.

@ONTHEEDGEFRED 2 жыл бұрын
You make reference to the 1971 pre emission car and I can appreciate that because I'm the same way. But they started measuring horsepower a little bit differently, I think in 72, which means that 266 was net which means it was with all the accessories that The engine would have to power as opposed to a bare engine on the dyno.

Lois Kats ; You haven't been watching then. There's a 67 Fairlane GTA, 1970 Torino Cobra been beating up on the competition. Is your name Lois Katanos? This is John Edgerly in Maryland. I lost contact with a Lois Katanos. I own a 1969 Fastback Cobra with 4spd.

@@cobracharmer6178 Goodday John, Yes this is Louis from Melbourne, Australia. I believe I have watched every video on this channel, it is that a Ford win is rare & long between drinks. I don't doubt a Ford or Mercury has won a race or 2. Nothing against Ford's, I love all muscle cars & a 1969 Ford Torino Fastback with a 428 Cobra Jet is a super beautiful muscle car the lines on those Fastback are absolutely delicious. I am a Mopar & Oldsmobile guy but truth been know they are all beautiful. How do I get to see your beautiful Torino. Cheers Louis 👍

The best running Olds engines were the 65-67 400 with the 4 inch bore, 3.975 stroke and the J if I remember correctly heads. And the 425 that was not allowed in the A bodies, 4.126 bore and 3.975 stroke. Both had light cranks and pistons and 7 inch rods that were really strong. I built a 425 for a 66 442 with an M21 4 speed. That engine was a real surprise in that revved as good as a 400, but made more hp than any 455 and 495 ft lbs of torque the hp was 415 and it was just a wonderful car. 66 442 2 dr post.
