The red button isn't really a hi/lo range switch, its a switch for the 2-speed rear differential.
@1SqueakyWheel
@1SqueakyWheel 6 ай бұрын
.... which, in essence, made it a hi/lo range selector. Perhaps you meant to say that this isn't an "overdrive" switch, since the tranny is still at 1:1 in 5th, and it's only changing the final diff ratio.
@farmalmta
@farmalmta 6 ай бұрын
It's a hi/lo, and was referred to as such by those who had them and still is. We had an F600 grain truck with 391 FT and 4spd with the 2spd axle. The fact the hi/lo is at the differential has no bearing on how it's referred to.

On a working truck the 2 speed isn't so much 2 speeds . (High and low speed) Its more like low speed then really low speed. Also that 534 with proper gearing will pass everything on the road, except gas stations .

As a real farmer in Minnesota I am quite familiar with these heavy duty gas cab and chassis trucks with a grain bed. We have a 1975 IHC Loadstar 1600 with a tilting grain master box, it's powered by an international gasoline motor (I forget the model of the motor, it's not the original one, that's long used up).

@@robwhite3241 It could be, I know the motor came out of a 1970 loadstar 1600 snowplow that was in the salvage yard way back in 1984, I'd have to look when it comes back from the shop, it had to get a new radiator because we fixed the radiator but it went bad in a bad place and the fix didn't hold.

Funny, I was coming to the comments to mention the same basic truck. We use our Lodestar as a seed truck; it has an auger on the back to fill the hoppers on the planter. That old truck isn't the prettiest thing, and she sure ain't in a hurry. It takes a couple of minutes to hit the top speed of about 55mph. It's got the 2 speed rear end, as the featured truck does, but I've never used it. As abused as that truck has been, I'm afraid that if I try it, the rear end might blow out, lol. But, it's easier to drive than my buddys 5 speed S10, and as long as you're not snatching gears, and treat the clutch and shifter with a little finesse, you'll have a trouble free drive from A to B.
@Richard-Allen
@Richard-Allen 6 ай бұрын
@@magnificenthonky Ours is in pretty nice shape but I attribute part of that to the steel grainmaster box and the tilting fiberglass hood, had it had a wooden box that would've rotted forever again, and had it had a metal hood vs. a fiberglass one I'm sure it would've long rusted. Our truck is pretty good to drive, it doesn't feel shaky, and believe me, I've been in some trucks that feel like the whole frame could fall out at any minute.
@magnificenthonky
@magnificenthonky 6 ай бұрын
@@Richard-Allen Ours has a steel box, too; Midwest, I think. Body wise, she's mostly in good shape. Minimal denting, a couple of small rust holes, but nothing too terrible. Problem is, maintenance has been greatly neglected, and repairs have been done done as cheaply as possible. You know, spit, chewing gum, bailing wire, and the like. None of the gauges work. Some of the wiring is old extension cord. The auger gets power through a household light switch (makes me wonder whose house is missing the switch, lol). The ride is relatively smooth, though, as yours is. IH got some things right, when it came to the suspension. Compared to most Ford, GM, or Dodge equivalents, the IH trucks ride like Cadillacs. Well, Cadillacs from the era when Cadillacs rode like Cadillacs, anyway.

This was the final year of this bodystyle that started in 1961. I worked for an outfit that had three of these. Two had 534 gas engines and the other a 361. The 534s were first manufactured in 1958. I learned to drive tractor-trailers and back into a tight dock in with one of these. Steering was by armstrong. I was sore for several days after. It's nice to see at least one of these has survived and is still out there.

While working for the Rural township Highway department learning about road maintenance operating dump truck to do gravel spreading & Coal patch repair & operating John Deere mowing tractors & Back Hoes I learned that type of transmission on the 1969 international single axle 2070 A FleetStar gas engine Dump truck a tip for you on down shifting you have to rev it between gears example like going from 5th to 4th or 4th to 3rd or 3rd to 2nd and you can split on the downshifts too as long as you downshift the stick before you Dog Split it down example you would downshift the stick from 5th high to 4th high then you would simultaneously Push the Dog splitter down and give the foot feed a quick rev and you would be in 4th Low then you pull that Dog Splitter up into high ratio give a quick rev while systematically shifting into 3rd high then push that dog down quick rev now your in 3rd low you should have it down to a Art form by the end of the day by the end of the second day you should be equal to a 30 year Pro ! Remember practice practice practice that’s how you get to Carnegie Hall and have fun with it master that gear box that’s the problem with a lot of of new drivers they’re lazy and don’t want to put the effort into developeing the skill they whine oh mommy I need an automatic I hate these new wheel holders they just want to ride & listen to music & the GPS toy because no one want to learn any MAP reading skills LOL!!

Great video! I did not see you shift that 2 speed axle! As a fire truck it was fully loaded most of the time. Split shifting with the 2 speed most likely helped increase speed when responding to emergencies. However, a lot of volunteer fire departments would delete the 2 speed as it was confusing to operate for most volunteers. The cabs of those series trucks were raised around 1965 I believe to offer more headroom. This was the last year before the Louisville line came out.

There was one Ford V8 larger than the 534…..it was an engine they built for tanks in WW2, the “GAA V8”….1,100 Cubic inches, over twice the displacement of the 534. They were overhead camshaft engines with 4 valves per cylinder. Pretty wild stuff for the 1940’s. By 1969 Gas engines weren’t really the preference in heavy trucks, lighter single axle jobs like the one you’re driving they were still somewhat popular but mostly because they were REAL cheap, gas was REAL cheap and the gas engines were easy enough to work on that if you could work on a car you could work on them. The diesels were already king on the highways by the late 60’s though, Cummins had been out with their 855 “Small Cam” engines for quite a while by then and they came up to 335 HP, CAT had just entered the truck market with the medium duty 1150 Diesel (what would later become the 3208), the lower powered HD 1674 engines, and the top of the line 380+hp 1693 “big bore” diesel, and GM/Detroit had been building their inline 6-71 since 1938 and the V-71’s came out at the start of the 60’s, going from the 238hp 6V71 up to a 318Hp 8V and the big dog, top of the heap engine…the 12V71, factory rated at 435-475 HP in truck applications. These were the choice of most trucking companies and owner operators who ran their trucks every day and really put some miles on them. Those big diesels with removable liners really changed the game entirely. Similar or More useable power, better fuel economy, and the short block could easily do a million miles plus with a few “in-frame” rebuilds and never come out of the truck.

Is the hood scoop functional? Is it for allowing cooler air to enter the air cleaner? I love that truck.

See, that cab interior is EXACTLY what I want in a truck. You could probably remove those lap belts, though, and make it even more basic. I wish that you could still buy new trucks, this basic, and computer free. Less junk to break, minimal plastic, maximum steel, easy to work on. Hell, I'd love to find passenger cars, as basic as this truck.

The Ford GAA is the largest gasoline v8 ever produced. Believe its around 1000cid! Produced for Sherman tanks during WWII!

The late 60'd Ford Super Duties were available with Cummins diesels. I drove several T950 dumps with a Cummins a 5/4 quad and air brakes. Hauled many a heavy load but not real fast like the new trucks do.

these actually had slow opening secondariees on the carb to prevent breaking the drive shaft while hauling a huge amount of weight. they didn't want you to have 20k pounds in the back and have you dump on the gas so hard then pop a u joint in the drive line cuz of the shock! its crazy!

The starting key is on the left, like a Porsche. Of course we all know that was made for Le Mans. You run to your car - the 'Le Mans start' - , you forget about your seatbelts, so left hand starts the car, and right puts it into gears. So this definitely is a Le Mans truck.

Ford did make a larger V-8 than the 477/534. It was the GAA, I believe it was 1091 cu. in. All aluminum. When we were kids, our dad had a Sterling T-26 wheeled recovery military unit. It had the GAA, weighed about 66 K pounds. It could lift and drive a TD-20 dozer on the hook.

That truck was up town for its day, most trucks at that time didn’t have power steering and most semi trucks didn’t even have brakes on the steering axle.

No anti-lock on the brakes. So you always HOPE TO GOD nobody pulls in front of you, because slamming on the brakes means likely locking them up and leaving skid marks, and possibly not having room enough to stop. Edit: I wish I'd known about this guy 10 years ago. On the farm where I work we used to have an old litter truck, I think it was an International, was made back around 1960, and we were still using it for it's intended purpose right up until it was sold.
