The Ford Galaxie is a full-sized car that was built in the United States by Ford for model years 1959 through to 1974. The name was used for the top models in Ford's full-size range from 1958 until 1961, in a marketing attempt to appeal to the excitement surrounding the Space Race. In 1958, a concept car was introduced called "la Galaxie" which incorporated the headlights into pods inline with the grille and a reduced front profile.[2]
For 1962, all full-size Fords wore the Galaxie badge, with "500" and "500/XL" denoting the higher series. The Galaxie 500/LTD was introduced for 1965 followed by the Galaxie 500 7-Litre for 1966. The Galaxie 500 prefix was dropped from the LTD in 1966, and from the XL in 1967;[3] however the basic series structuring levels were maintained. The "regular" Galaxie 500 continued below the LTD as Ford's mid-level full-size model from 1965 until its demise at the end of the 1974 model year.[4]: 401-42
The Galaxie was the competitor to the high-volume full sized Chevrolet Impala.[5] and the Plymouth Belvedere.
The 1969 model was built on a new platform with a 121-inch (3,100 mm) wheelbase. It was the end for the 427 and 428 engines, save for only the police package versions which continued to use the 360 hp 428 P Code 'Police Interceptor' as their top motor for 1969-70.[5] Replacing the FE series-based 427 and 428 engines was the new 429 cu in (7.0 L) "ThunderJet" that was introduced in the 1968 Ford Thunderbird; it was part of the new Ford 385 engine series. Power, at 360 hp (270 kW) for the dual-exhaust 4-barrel version, was higher than the 428's 345 hp (257 kW) and lower than the racing-bred 427's final rating of 390 hp (290 kW); there was also a single-exhaust 2-barrel version with 320 hp (240 kW) available. The dashboard was built as a pod around the driver rather than traditionally extending across both sides. The XL and Galaxie 500 Sportsroof had rear sail panels to simulate a fastback roofline.[5] The rear trim panel below the tail lights was used to distinguish the different trim levels. The Country Squire was, perhaps, the pinnacle of design for that wagon with the concealed headlights.

What you have here is two kits mixed into one. Most of the parts are from the 1968 Galaxie kit which had a NASCAR version. That kit had an interior without seats. This kit was the old 1969 Galaxie promo kit which is why you have the interior tub with the seats molded in. They probably had a few incomplete molds laying around and just used everything they had left. Great stuff for the parts box!

That's exactly correct, the original tooling for this kit came from the all new (from the 1966 anyway) 1967 Ford Galaxy kit. In fact, that's the custom grill in an original 67 issue. This tool was then modified into the 1968 annual, which was then turned into this 1969. Those parts were "gated off" the tool for this 1969 release. Very cool build and thank you for the review.

80's Hot Rod made from the former family (dad's) car. Moms' always drove 4 doors or wagons. Dads' got the sportier car. Anyway, after many trips to the local junk yard and dropping quite a few paychecks at the Parts Store, we have THIS ! ! Thanks for another fun "drive" down Scale Lane with Team hpiguys Workshop (need a logo).

Been waiting for them to re-release this model. The last issue from almost 20 years ago is getting pricey on ebay. This started out life as the 67 Galaxie which was then turned into the 68 model, then the 69. I know the 67 had separate seats and console, and the 68 probably did also. So they probably decided to mold it in the interior for 69, but left the 68 seats on the sprue. Technically with the hidden headlight grill it should be a Galaxie XL or an LTD. Round2 did another really good kit with that nice decal sheet! They've really been taking what they have and adding some value with those details. Nice build Chris! One mistake I might point out since I've seen several people make it. You painted the trunk floor steel. From 1965 on, the gas tank sat vertically in front of the trunk floor behind the rear axle.

Nice job! Small point, your upper body striping should follow the upper contour of the fender so as to not ‘sag’. The lower body stripe should follow the lower body inset a little closer. I did striping for car dealers for a few decades, vividly recall having to replace the graphics on a repainted Galaxie in the mid-‘80s. The owner was a stickler!

Chris, actually this isn't a Galaxie. It's a "Ford XL." Ford separated the XL and LTD series from the Galaxie starting in 1966 (for the LTD) and 1967 (for the XL). However the XL and Galaxie 500 did share this "Sports Hardtop" body style!

I have built this kit twice and if it had a better engine compartment I would love it. One picky point is that Ford didn't offer the 428 in the 1969 Galaxie only the production 429. They did have the 390 so you could say it's a 390 vice the 428. The decals look awesome and just for that reason I will build the kit.
