The Plymouth Barracuda is a two-door pony car that was manufactured by Chrysler Corporation from 1964 through 1974 model years.
The first-generation Barracuda was based on the Chrysler A-body and was offered from 1964 until 1966. A two-door hardtop (no B-pillar) fastback design, it shared a great majority of parts and bodywork with the Plymouth Valiant, except for the huge and distinctive wraparound rear glass.
The second-generation Barracuda, though still Valiant-based, was heavily redesigned. Built from 1967 through 1969, it was available as a two-door in fastback, notchback, and convertible versions.
The third generation, offered from 1970 until 1974, was based on the Chrysler E-body, exclusive to it, and the slightly larger Dodge Challenger. A completely new design, the two-door Barracuda was available in hardtop and convertible body styles.
The second-generation Barracuda was redesigned with model-specific sheet metal, yet still shared many components with the Valiant. It rode on a 108 in (2,743 mm) wheelbase A-body and was available as a convertible, and a notchback coupe, in addition to the fastback design.
1967 Barracuda notchback hardtop
The new Barracuda was chiefly the work of John E. Herlitz and John Samsen,[4] with Coke-bottle side contours and heavily revised front and rear ends. Design changes included wider wheel openings, curved side glass, and S-curved roof pillars on the hardtop.
The roofline on the fastback coupe was more streamlined, more steeply raked, and with a much smaller flush rear window in place of the distinctive massive wraparound in the original model. Also, the overall use of chrome trim was more restrained.
During this time the first U.S. Federal auto safety standards were phased in, and Chrysler's response a requirement for side-marker lights distinguishes each model year of the second-generation Barracuda:
1967: no sidemarker lamps or reflectors, and backup lights on the rear valance by the license plate.
1968: round side marker lamps without reflectors, mostly white tail lamps with backup lights in the tail lamp housing.
1969: little changes on the front grille, rectangular side marker reflectors without lamps, and the backup lamps were moved back to the rear valance by the license plate.
In 1969, Plymouth placed an increased emphasis on performance. A new option was the Mod Top, a vinyl roof covering with a floral motif, available in 1969 and 1970. Plymouth sold it as a package with seat and door panel inserts done in the same pattern.[10]
The 1969 version of the 383 engine was upgraded to increase power output to 330 bhp (246 kW), and a new trim package called 'Cuda was released. The 'Cuda, based on the Formula S option, was available with either the 340, 383 and, new for 1969, the 440 Super Commando V8.

This really brings back memories. In the late 80's I had a 68 barracuda. It originally had a 340 but thanks to my friends dad who had a salvage yard it had a transplanted 426 from a 70 cuda. Sold it when I got married. No longer have the car but still have the wife.

I remember building a Cuda back in the early 80's. It never survived all the moves I made in my life. Thanks for a great memory. And thanks for a great video and build. Greetings from Manitowoc.

It is QUITE the custom beast you did here, Chris! Like it. I think that over the kit is quite good. Tho, I think they could improve it by making the headlights separate clear lenses, more complex under carriage, where the exhaust system, rear suspension, etc and putting in an optional HEMI engine. Tho, what I REALLY think this kit is missing, at least for me, is dogdish hubcap (and the wheels that go with them), else, it's a pretty solid kit that, while it could be improved give good end results.

1989 I bought a '69 Cuda slant 6, automatic as my son's first car. While it was one of MY dream cars, my son wisely said thanks and sold it. This build is a real memory flogger. I bought the Plymouth kit with slant six I didn't use so I'll build "my" Cuda with that engine. BTW, it was white with black interior and WIDE white wall tires too - YUK. He's always been smarter than me...

Great job great color combo The 69 barracuda had a different hood than the 67 or 68 That one year hood was used on Dodge darts from 73 till the end of production in 1976 It's the dart with the pointy grille

I built this kit when I was about 12. It did come with a hemi engine for the drag race version. I think it also had racing slicks and the inside of the rear fender wells were marked so you could trim them for the slick tires. There were a very popular 69 barracuda on the drag racing circuit at the time. It was a wheelie car with a hemi engine in the back seat called the Hurst Hemi under glass. The 68-69 barracuda was also a popular Funny car body. Both Don "The Snake" Purdhomme and Tom "the Mongoose" McEwan ran that body.

I built this kit in 2004 as part of an AMT 1969 Muscle Car set which also featured a Ford Torino Cobra and a Hurst Oldsmobile 4-4-2. I'm not sure what happened but some of the decals were damaged and I couldn't use them, but nonetheless it built up into a fairly nice model despite its age and simplicity. I'd definitely consider getting another one since I don't have many Chrysler cars in my collection.

I'm glad the kit came with whitewalls... woohoo! The expanded decal sheet is a blessing too. I have an older issue car that I can use the script and other decals on. As usual, you did a phenomenal job on the car but I'd STILL love to know what model number Molotow pens you use as there are a few of them. Keep rocking buddy!

Certainly one of Chrysler design's best bodies. Too bad the kit seems light on chassis, interior and engine detail. On my maybe list, but thanks for the usual completeness of your coverage. Cheers!

This is a nice kit and the build looks awesome. I wish they would bring the parts back from the killer cuda issue with the slotted rims. They changed the custom wheels and added the recall rims as the only choice in the 80’s Plus now every new kit is getting those 5 spoke rims which is getting boring. Plus what makes it a 3 in one?
