1970 AMX

One sweet looking AMX..only 4,116 built for 1970..probably less than 1500 still around. I have had my '70 AMX since 1981..stock 360-4V with hurst 4-spd..bittersweet orange metalic w/white c stripes..hopefully someday will post a video of it...thanks Scottie for sharing.

"Kill 'em with a Rambler" I love it. My first car was a 63 Rambler 880 with a 327 V-8. First car I purchased was a 1970 AMX 4-speed with the 360 "Go" package. That little car was fast and suprised many chevy, ford, and mopar owners. My AMX weighed only 3030 lbs and with that torque motor and 3.73 posi would burn the tires off. Heck of a car stock. This guys AMX is too much! Thanks for post.

Higzy, thank you. I agree. I'm always the only one and always the best looking and best sounding. My AMX here was on thick carpet so it muffled the sound. You should hear it on pavement ! When I do the World of Wheels I come in with open exhaust and knock everybodys socks off. I even had the dragster guys say that. Ohh Ohh fun fun fun. I love rubbing it in !

Got into a lot of trouble with a buddy who drove one of these when I was a teenager,by the end of that summer I knew a lot of the cops where I live. Very cool tight car. Miss seeing these.

Scottie, this is my car. To use the 69 dash you need a donor car more or less. You have to use the 69 steering column and the braces and brackets that go with that column. It all fits just have to have the parts. The column mounting plate that bolts to the firewall is different but you can make it work. the 70 has the key in the column the 69 key in dash. Just have to cut the wiring harness. The color codes are identical. Heater box was from 69 donor as this car had A/C. It all will fit. Doug

I always liked the AMX but the 390V8 was King. Had to have one like this and I did get one. I previously had a 1970 Javalin with the 304V8 and 3 speed on the floor. I was always an AMC fan. Still AM!!!!

Love his 1970 AMX it's one of the nicest ones I have ever seen. It only needs is the AMC Factory Emblem that goes between the rear window and trunk and it would be perfect.

I have the same thing. A 1970 AMX with a 1969 dash. I bought a nice1970 dash long time ago but the 69 dash just looks so much better!

agree with you on that. the 70 dash looks bad with all that flat area. was it a safety redesign or styling change? on my 69 i sometimes had that center piece thing with the little engraved # plate come flying off when i accelerated hard. However, i think the 70 ram air hood looks better. ive seen guys put the 70 front end on a 69. its a bastard but its the best of both cars.

I had a 1970 390 AMC AMX like this one. Mine was white. I bought it in run down condition in the early 1980s but had a rust free body and still with original engine. Got it for $700.00 cash. I put a set of headers on it as I worked the body and condition over. Solid engine too. Ran great. But I let a young fellow talk me out of it while it sat in my driveway. It was not for sale but he talked me out of it with the cash I would take for it. American Motors was really not a popular car maker.

My father had a 1970 with a 390, bought it from Plummer Motor Sales in Swanton. His engine blew as well when we were merging onto U.S. 23 at Sterns Road. It was under warranty, he got a new engine and it ran like a raped ape until he traded it in a few years later. Man, I wanted that car....

But his comment to automatics is laughable , other then that he's got a real nice ride , thanks for the interview and shots of a Black ( the hardest colour to work with ) AMX . I just got my 1969 AMX AMX X code, AT, PS, PB, AIR, GO PACK CAR. Just got the car running great. She has been under car cover for 20 years so surface rust, needs paint. Hunter green is factory color but was painted matador red 20 years ago. Should I pay extra to repaint factory color or keep the red color? I love your reviews and your opinion. Thanks NEAL

The days of buying one cheap(AMX) are over. So I had to move on. Right now I use my Black on Black 2002 Ford Thunderbird as my daily driver. My little 2 seater has had more comments on it than all the rest of my cars combined. But that 1970 AMX should have been a keeper. Still think about it all the time.

The AMX and the Studebaker Avanti two cars that I thought were great looking cars,similar in looks with the Avanti being ahead of it's time coming out in 1962,how bad I wanted those cars. Studebaker had some awesome designs. This AMX is one bitchin ride,what a gorgeous car!

BW, you can make a 69 into a 70 just by changing the fender caps as 70s are longer. Change the hood, grill etc. The fenders are basically identical and will work but will have the 69 marker lights. If you prefer the 70 marker lights ( I used 74s as they have more modern rounded corners) the 70 marker light will cover over the recessed rectangle for the 69 markers. All you have to do is drill two small holes. Good luck on finding a good 70 grill. I have one that's my backup. Hope this helps, Doug

My 1969 AMC AMX XCODE 390 AT AIR PS PB GO PACK was changed to 70 front end and it looks great . Hood keeps florida car cool. Just painted original hunter green with white go pack stripes and matching rocker panel emblems white. Also painted hood, fender tops and around windows matte white, looks very cool and unique.
