@@gt-37guy6 Holdener tests the engines on the dyno with open long tube headers, electric drive on the water pump and usually a modern Holley carb that is jetted spot on. I believe that 374hp might be the ultimate potential of the Boss 302 if tested like that but as installed in the car probably 75-85 less gross and 130-140 less net maybe? That would make it about 240 at the wheels which would explain the 94mph trap speeds. I was actually surprised it wasn't at least in the mid 14 second range with those 4.89 gears.

G’day C& Z, Great to have you back mind, body & soul & that video is just CLASSIC CLASSIC C & Z, all the way. Back to your all time best with your comments, surprised being a Boss Mustang you didn’t play any Bruce Springsteen “ The Boss “ music in the video, I was expecting it. Now being an Aussie, if I was a muscle car I would have to be an Aussie Muscle Car. Now being born in 1970 it would have to be a 1970 Aussie Muscle Car, & I would be what I have. 1970 Valiant ( Mopar ) VG 770 Hardtop, mine has a 6 cylinder HP Hemi, but I would order the factory V8 with the 318 Fireball. Then in 1971 I would get a heart transplant & get the 340 @ 275 hp shoe horned & out with the 318 2BBL. The 770 model was the gentleman’s muscle car similar to a GTX or Coronet R/T. If I was an American Muscle Car, for me one choice & a 1 of 1 build but you could order it. 1970 Plymouth Sport Fury GT with a 426 Hemi, centre console, dual mirrors, vinyl roof with 3:23.1 Limited Slip Diff with the biggest tyre & wheel combo, effortless driving at 120 mph. That’s me love my big cars with lots of power. So being an Aussie get the best of both world both Aussie & American Muscle Cars. Great to have you back. In the late 70's I had a 1970 Cutlass and my friend was driving a 71 Challenger. Given to him by his Dad, it was a 318 dad car but still nice. One night at my girlfriends apartment I got stupid and decided to race up the top of the 2 story parking ramp. I didn't get very high at the top but came down hard. Ended up the frame was cracked. Not to be outdone my buddy decided to do the same thing (he was much crazier than me) only he decided to do it going DOWN! Needless to say he flew off the end of that ramp and landed somewhere at the bottom, probably a 10 to 12 foot drop. Woke up everybody in the apartment and he manage to just drive it away somehow, before any cops showed up. That was the last I saw of that Challenger, since he never had the money to fix it and in those days, they were just cars, not the collectors they are today. Crazy times.

The 383 was the best engine Chrysler made. These 15 second times for both cars is far more realistic than all the modded stuff that gets bragged about. This was my heyday and the biggest myth I see is the "giant killer" 340 Mopar crap. They ran decent, which was only in good tune, which was almost never.
@1967davethewave3 ай бұрын
The best thing about the 383 was that it seemed to respond extremely well to the usual modifications in my opinion. I have owned several and they would go from 15 seconds bone stock to mid 13's with just a cam, intake, carb, headers and a little tuning. No head modifications or increased compression. And they had to have been the most durable Big Block ever made.

Another buddy had a garage and raced an Altard and had collected several BB 427's. I bought one that had big 66 heads and took it to a local machine shop to go through the motor. It was nasty. I also swapped out the 4 speed and for a built turbo 350 with a 3500 stall converter and added 373 gears in the rear end. I went from 16's to 12's on Firestone Polly glass tires. A surprisingly good match up. I gotta say, that even though I`m Mopar till death, I got goosebumps when you said 4.86 gears in the Stang. Which in themselves should have taken at least a full second off of its ET. With 10.5 CR, 4.86 rear, 7k red line. I wonder why the Max HP was rated by Ford at only 290@5,800 RPM? This was before the insurance companies got in and everybody started fibbing about their HP ratings. I`m guessing that a 350 rating would not have been too far out of a possibility. This all should have made this Stang a beast. Not a dog? I`m guessing that traction was his problem? Yeah, the Stang won. In reality it should have dominated. The Challenger could have made a better showing. Was this the basic 383 four barrel and not the Magnum? Despite the only 5 HP difference on paper, the 383 Magnum is a ton faster than the 4-barrel version. Despite the disappointing times, these times were very reflective of actual times turned in by these cars from back in their days. Beautiful cars, great races. Thank you.

DIdnt know there were differences on the basic 383 or magnum? They were like a much bigger 327. Short stroke big bore. Great for a fun driver but not much torque for a heavy car. Back in the day the st race crowd didnt have a good opinion of them...same with 428 stangs

Best 1/4mi of 14.22@ 98mph (DA 4200, 104 degrees outside) on 225/65/17's (798 treadwear so traction was an issue). Trying to get it to 14.0, but fighting with the stability control/ torque management to let me have full throttle in 1st gear (best 60' has been in the 2.26 range, but it'll only do that once or twice before the ecu kills the throttle response and starts yanking timing).

BUT THEN SLIGHTLY TALLER REAR TIRES AND / OR SLIGHTLY TALLER " CHEATER SLICKS " REAR TIRES ( IF RULES ALLOWED THEM ) MIGHT HAVE BEEN NEEDED AND NECESSARY TO ACTUALLY " TONE DOWN " THAT MUCH REAR END GEARING A LITTLE .

The TA Challenger would have been a better comparison. They were both built to Trans Am race .I took the Mustang in this race. The 383 Magnum was a grocery getter!!😂 The TA Challenger would have edged that 302 Boss out

Agree that engine just doesnt make enough torque for a big heavy car! most guys bought used 383 cars for peanuts, pulled the 383 out the first weekend and in went either a 2 bbl 318 for daily commutes or a 440 to make it move.
@williehutchinson31812 ай бұрын
@@gordocarbo that's right! A 440 would make a heavy car move for sure. That 340 Six pack was a potent engine! Even the big block guys will tell you that thing was bad😈

The purple Challenger is unquestionably cool, but that Boss 302 would have been my choice of wheels back in high school - and it still is.

If I was a car......it would be a 1970 Monteverdi 375 Hi Speed. Italian styling, made in Switzerland, Mopar 440 big block under the hood with a 4 speed. Very rare. Jay Leno calls it a Road Runner that went to Europe and private school.

The reason the Challengers didn't sell is because there were 2 trains of thought on it: 1. It looks like a bargain basement version of the Hemi Cuda and 2. It also looks like a Charger that needs to go on a diet.

Ok, I'll be the **** that's hard on Z here. First, we're all glad you're back but 1 vid every 11 days won't feed daddy's shameful needs. And then you give us these beautiful cars running 15s? I had to check my settings to make sure the playback speed was set to normal. Now I too know what my wife feels like while I'm eating that aforementioned sandwich.

I am adding this comment before I see the race and I feel very confident that’s a 71 challenger will win relatively easily because well it just should. I mean at the Mustang was a boss 351 it probably be a different story, but we’ll see.?

My 2005 PTCruiser GT turbo runs times similar to these, mid 15's @ 85+ mph.
@1967davethewave3 ай бұрын
Many people state this, which is fact. But a 383 in Challenger with a few performance parts will go mid 13's at 103-4. And get a little spendier and add some really good heads, a bigger cam and intake and low 12's are right there. And there are 2 bigger engines you can choose and get similar but larger increases from. In 2024 you would be hard pressed to find a completely stock 71 Challenger out running around to race in your Focus or PT Cruiser. But it would cost very much more to match the old muscle car in modified form with any modern front drive car. Oh sure, it can be done, there are Civics running 10's, but it was so easy to do on the old cars.
