I've enhanced the 1970 Week 12 Cardinals at Lions partial broadcast that exists. I've upscaled the picture to 1080p with Topaz, and also denoised and double the framerate. I used Resolve to adjust contrast and to color-correct the picture, which had a greenish hue to it. It still isn't gonna win first prize in the color department, but it's better than it was. Color doesn't pop in this one, which I believe to be a product of the stadium and the cameras that day. My thanks to romelovesdan for providing the DVD files used for this project.

Well I've enhanced over 125 games now with the software, so I must think pretty highly of it :) Has performed much better than expected for me. I use it to upscale these 480p games to 1080p, to double their framerate from 29.97fps to 59.94, to sharpen, and to 'revert' and eliminate compression artifacts, which it does a fabulous job of. And after I do all that, I take the end result into the free version of Da Vinci Resolve and perform the color and contrast adjustment, as well as the editing portion. Those two programs working in tandem often produced stunning results compared to the original source.

This game was played on December 6, 1970. It's odd to see both benches on the same side of the field. I miss the days when players wore capes on the sideline, the screen wasn't constantly cluttered with graphics, announcers didn't feel the urge to fill every second with talk, and your ears weren't bombarded with crowd noise for the entire game. Love those ground-level replays!

No constant celebrations for basic tackles, no overprotecting of the QB’s, TD’s, not as many TV timeouts, more team loyalty, etc. Yes the players are faster, in better condition, etc. however back then the game was enough.

You were very close to where my late aunt lived. She lived on Rocky Crest, just east of Orchard Lake Road (in-between 10 & 11 Mile Road). She bought the house for $36,000 back in May 1971, and I do believe she paid cash. And that was way before I-696 was built. I remember going there with my mom &'grandmother in the early-mid 80's when I was a kid, and I-696 was being constructed. It seemed like an eternity driving from Warren (10 Mile & Groesbeck area) to my aunt's house. She was the second owner. My aunt wanted to keep the house in the family. Everyone thought that her husband, who was in poor health, was going to pass away first. In a shocking twist, my aunt passed in February 2011 at the age of 80. Her husband made my uncle & his wife the head of his estate. When the husband died in June 2012 at the age of 82, my uncle had his family take all the valuables & immediately put the house up for sale 2 1/2 months later for $125,000. The house sold for $115,000 in early November 2012 & my uncle took the money & ran. 😟 Still, that area is nice.

Both teams had a lot of potential. Fun bits of the NFL's past show up in this video - the old stadium, uniforms, helmet faceguard styles, straight-on kickers, goal post in the endzone, Boston Patriots, all the officials wearing white hats, etc... Thanks for doing this and sharing!

Thanks for the upload. Two teams from fast declining midwestern cities. Detroit was still the nation's 5th largest city in 1970 at 1.5M, though nobody in the stadium would forsee the rate of its coming collapse (ranked 29th and 620K today). 5 years later they'd flee the city for the Pontiac Silverdome, eventually returning in 2002. Since this game, the Lions success on the field has matched that of its city....abysmal. But as I type this, they're 9-3, for their best 12 game start since 1962. I'm pulling for them and the city.

Thank you for this gem. I was at this game and have said many times it was by far the coldest game I ever attended. I was 13 years old and we sat in center field upper deck bleachers. In addition to the north wind blowing openly behind us, the bleachers were covered in snow and ice from an Alberta clipper the night before. My friend and I kept asking his Dad for a shot of whiskey he had cause it was so cold. He did not oblige and we were miserable. Except for the win! Other observations: Field conditions were obviously horrible. Referees were very generous with spots back then and man oh man did these defenses hit that day. And Wayne Walker chasing down a receiver 70 years downfield? Also...Lions had Mel Farr, Altie Taylor and Steve Owens in the same backfield? Imagine if Nick Eddy dd not get hurt.

It got cold under there. The other odd thing is you couldn't see most of a punt because the upperdeck blocked any ability to see the sky. Fondest of memories with my Dad. It's like three fourths the way thru and I gotta tell ya it may be an optiggable illusion as Tigger would say, but I swear all those players look bigger, than contemporary players. Either that or the field is smaller... huh!?! Also you can tell right off this is the day when it was, "Three downs and a cloud of dust." All and I mean all, the running plays never SEEM to get more than three yards. I know it's not all that way, but it is the vast majority. And again, the halfback's are bigger slash taller and or never bother to put their shoulders down. On an upside you can see the Lions sure have had a lot of Luck with players named Sanders. But in that era it was Lem Barney all the way - always making the big plays - WOW! Overall tho, I'm gonna say it: I can't see any difference, or any substantial difference between the 1970 Lions and the 2020 Lions. Except for a few blips on the radar like C. Sanders in the 90s or C. Johnson in and around 2010, Stafford too - the Lions stayed their same old mediocre for fifty straight years. But this is gonna be the year Right - 2023 they go all the way!!!

I’ll bet a lot of the players here have died. It used to be the case I think you had to play four years of college ball for NFL eligibility which means the youngest players would be 22, and as of 2023 that would be 75 years old today. But of course the average player was older so you’re looking at 80.

Interesting. No on screen graphics. This game was probably blacked out in Detroit. Tiger stadium as a football field.

Dave, you never cease to amaze and impress. There's a pipe dream I have that you'll find the following games: 1971 Monday Night Football of Steelers at Chiefs; 1971 Monday Night Football of Chiefs at 49ers. Thinking there's a 99% chance those broadcasts are gone to the ether, I nevertheless wish they could be located. I can't tell you enough how I enjoy these marvelous videos you produce. God Bless, Chris

Battle of the 2 teams with the most losses in NFL history (through 2020 at least) The Cardinals have lost a total of 771 games. The Lions have lost 681 games. Real nice work here BTW and thank you.

This was the beginning of the best time in NFL football, probably in the 70s. Players could actually hit other players and there was no instant replay. Technology has damaged football a bit. But the NFL just trusted the refs to make the right calls and usually they did. Refs messed up sure but it was part of the intrigue.

Refs made calls when there was no instant replay for millions of people to see if they were the right call or not. Of course you trusted the refs back then. Players were tougher back then and would brutalize current players if we had a time machine to set up a game. But today’s players are much, much faster and more skilled and would blow the doors off the old time team in the passing game.
