Thanks for posting this. It was team announcer Russ Hodges' last season with the Giants. Nice to hear him on this recording.

Great memories for me. Went to many games at Candlestick during this time.

I saw Gaylord Perry throw a no-hitter on Sept. 17, 1968 at Candlestick. He beat Bob Gibson and the Cardinals 1-0. The Giants lone run came on a HR off the left field foul pole hit by our second baseman Ron Hunt. The next day Cardinals' pitcher Ray Washburn no-hit the Giants.

Candlestick was like my 2nd home in the late 60’s and early 70’s. I think 1970 was the 1st year for astroturf.

My first wife's family had season tickets right at third base. It had a good view of the AstroTurf seam that ran just outside the infield towards right field.

The first season with AstroTurf. The cranes beyond right field turning Candlestick into a multi-purpose facility. Also the last season for Russ Hodges calling play-by-play. on the radio.

I was too young to remember, was it colder with or without the Stadium enclosed? Also who was Russ Hodges Replacement with Lon taking over as lead?

Yes, the NFL's Forty-Niners were coming to Candlestick for the 1971 football season after spending their first 25 seasons in Kezar Stadium (1946-1970).

I always had assumed Candlestick had grass in 1970 and put in AstroTurf for 1971 when the 49ers moved in. This means Candlestick was the first baseball-only park to have an AstroTurf field. Comiskey Park had AstroTurf in the infield from 1969-1975, but always had grass in the outfield.

Candlestick Park was a miserable stadium before it was enclosed, but at least it had character. When they enclosed that place it remained a miserable stadium and lost it's character. As a Dodgers fan back then, I HATED the Giants! But I LOVED the rivalry! Now I don't care about any team. The players just go where the most money is. Strictly business.

Its funny how the move west treated the Dodgers to a beautiful ball park and great success and the Giants got a shitty ballpark and a long championship drought lol

the O'Malleys were considerably wealthier than the Stoneham family. Plus, the O'Malleys has other sources of revenue coming in that Horace Stoneham did not. By the mid 1960s Stoneham was already beginning to experience the financial problems that would force him to sell majority interest of the team to Bob Lurie.
