It’s funny, someone else was pissed because I “sold out” with the coating. He said that it should be painted like it was when built. Can’t make everyone happy. 😜

@@philliptrammell6206 And I get lambasted for going the "liquid" paint route. As long as I am happy with the end result that is all that matters, mine are my own toys anyways. I mean I was the one that scratched and dented them while playing. Each scratch is a good memory for me.

Ahhh...I had this one growing up. I remember it getting so rusty. I wish I still had it so I could restore just like you did. I wonder where it ended up. Maybe the one you restored IS mine. I hope so - it deserves it. Thank you for these videos. To me, they are more than just an interesting activity; more than just an OCD fix. This video, in particular, was a time portal for me. I remember exact moments playing with this toy. I remember it shiny and I remember it rusty and the dirt and the sun and the sandbox. So, this video isn't about polishing a physical object, it's about polishing memories. And, what great memories for me. Thank you! And....a message out to my Dad. I'm sorry I didn't take care of my toys when I was young. I didn't know any better. - and thank you for not getting upset about that.

Nicely done... very impressed!👍 I have the same Tonka grader with a couple of minor differences, most likely a different year. Mine has the finer tread pattern on the tires and there are a couple of bent tabs at the top front corners of the cab with amber plastic inserts to mimic flashing lights. Like any toy they made changes from time to time and surprisingly enough mine still has the oval Tonka decals on both sides of the cab which are still very vivid with color.

Yeah I 've had the same problem with the bench grinder, I am using it only sparingly now..... I am surprised that you are using powder coat - some restorers have stated that the powder coat doesn't seal metal like paint does and can allow rust to form under the cured powder coat... Nice job... thanks for sharing...

Your getting massive views, my stuff doesn't do that good so you must be doing something right. My grader has the rubber tires, which seems to be more rare out in the wild. It also was mine from when I was a kid so I am passing it down to my son. I also have my Dad's Nylint grader from about 1955 as seen in my grader resto video. I am still working on a large (in terms of customization) project that I hope to get uploaded here soon. This one has been taking much longer because of the lack of time to devote to it.

Great work! I just picked up a box from my parents house full of my old metal Tonkas. I’d love to restore them for when my 5 month old son gets a little older. Are there specific sizes for the rivets and axle caps? Also where to find the replacement decals?
@RustyShepherd
@RustyShepherd 4 жыл бұрын
I get the decals at toydecals.com. The original rivets are 1/8 x 1/8 compression rivets. The tool for those is impossible to find. Use small pop rivets. The axle caps are available at any hardware store. Take the axle with you to be sure you get the correct size.
