Instead of saving the best for last here's this show's extended solo by Mr. Rick Wakeman, Prior to the mammoth popularity he gained in Yes, (deservedly so)
Rick was no slouch when it came to generating audience excitement using a mere Hammond organ & humble wah-wah pedal for effects.
Dive In to an excellent (soundboard?) recording of the STRAWBS Concert at the Lyceum July 1970.
The Band
Dave Cousins
John Ford
Tony Hooper
Richard Hudson
Rick Wakeman
Ze zounds & zights assembled in a meaningful fashion at fueledbylove studio for your enjoyment. so enjoy.

One of my older sisters had THe Strawbs Lp Just A Collection of Antiques & Curios which had Rick playing on it & some Fairport Convention Lps . Borrowed them to listen to and was amazed at the guy playing keyboards of whom i never heard of up till then. When he ended up in YES i knew who & just how good Rick was . Never looked back as he is one hell of a musical genius That band was creative as hell as were The Strawbs but when i saw Yes in 71 Rick had replaced Tony Kaye & what a show that was , it left everyone stunned at the intense musical abilities Rick had & knowing how great Yes was it made for one of the many best concerts i saw back in those days. Always good to hear the old band here do what they did so well. Great Post!!!

Ha ha, betwixt you & I and anyone who bothers to read these replies - the misspelling wasn't deliberate, but was noticed and decided to just leave it. Certainly, has not hurt the popularity of the video... maybe it's a lucky Q ? Cheers!

I always come back to this which I heard on Antiques & Curios when I was around fifteen years-old. Being aware of mutually assured destruction by that age I'd given up on "dreams', but we've somehow managed to survive!

Saw Strawbs at Kidderminster. Frank Freemans Rick so young with very long blond hair. They did the number. There was only about 90 folks attended due to the small venue

Always heard of this band, totally getting into them now. Rick Wakeman is one of the best at this genre. Usually, the beginning of a musicians career is the best time to hear them before the industry begins to diminish their light.

Excellent observation, tho I'd add that Wakey has aged very well - his "Mars" album has everything I love about his compositional skills...and it's also my Go-Io music for vigorously exercising to. His Moog solos are about the right length, matching how long I am able to keep that Shake Weight a' goin.

I'd already had the live Strawbs album with Rick, but in 1974/75, The Strawbs "Hero & Heroine" album took its turn in rotation on my turntable & in my friend's 8-track player alongside the newest albums by Yes, Pink Floyd, Gentle Giant, King Crimson, Jeff Beck, Led Zeppelin, the list goes on... With the addition of John Hawken on keys (opening track "Autumn" is a mellotron fan's ear candy), their sound expanded to overtly include more prog than ever before, but still eclectic enough to host a Dave Lambert rocker, and a whole lotta David Cousins acoustic folk stylings & storytelling (sometimes dark, as in the title track, and "Round & Round"), and make it all work together as a whole so perfectly. "H&H" is still my favorite Strawbs album, I wouldn't change a thing about it, except perhaps to ask Steven Wilson to remix it in multichannel sound... 🕊️🙏🏻

"Down By the Sea" it was later in the 70's that I heard it but started to grab all the Strawbs LPs I could find...and as was well rewarded with much music that fit my style - not all my friends were as enthused, Boston and KISS were the "thing" at the time, but Strawbs music is timeless like all great art.

"hot mix" FYI - we just applied a gentle tweak to the EQ, raised the gain a bit... the audio was already quite robust, now is perfect, yes! Enjoy the show.

@alanthomson1227
@alanthomson1227 Жыл бұрын
@@fueledbylove I know the song was a parody , but firstly too many people missed the irony and it was used to ridicule our brave and selfless trade unionists , and secodly compared to their other magnum opus class work was not worthy . As I said I love the band in all its incarnations , thank them for Denny and Wakeman
@fueledbylove
@fueledbylove Жыл бұрын
@@alanthomson1227 Thanks for the explanation - it was not a favorite track of mine either. Strawbs main appeal was their Progressive side, and adding the Mellotron with Blue cemented their entry into the Halls of Prog, lol . The folk tunes and ballads of Cousins are very special required listening and unlike any popular U.S. folk groups I have heard. Strawbs offers some the best of both genres and the music has stood the test of time.

Rick Wakeman was at his best with The Strawbs...fter it 's going down and down , pompous and boring...but with Strawbs he had too play music not being virtuoso or the Liberace of prog.. He is very inspired here love the solo that starts at 1.30

Nope, that's Dave Cousins for certain singing lead and Tony Hooper is tossing in the harmonies. Some of their duets are kinda Simon and Garfunkleish in an English sort of way.
