This 16mm motion picture was created to promote the new Bell & Howell Autoload 16mm film projectors and show off the company's entire production line -- from high end to low end and everything in between: "A Full Horizon in Motion". The film begins by discussing some of the projector components such as the "shuttle" (:50) which pulls down the film via the sprocket holes. At 1:27 the loop restorer is shown. Also shown at 2:30 is the solid state amplifier, which was quite innovative in its day, and rack and pinion focusing by turning a knob (instead of the lens). At 3:20 the manual load Bell & Howell "slot ready" Model 1580 is shown. At 3:40 footage is shown of test participants loading the Bell & Howell projectors. At 4:30 a child is shown loading the Bell & Howell slot load. At 6:00 the 566 and model 567 high intensity projectors are shown. The 1579 manual load projector, a low cost unit, is shown at 6:33 along with the autoload 1585, a favorite for classroom use. The lightweight 1590 is shown at 7:00. The 1592 is shown at 7:12. At 7:56 the innovative "still" mode of the 1592 is shown and at 8:14 the "direct-a-motion" feature which allows slow speed projection.
Bell and Howell is a U.S.-based services organization and former manufacturer of motion picture machinery, founded in 1907 by two projectionists, and was originally headquartered in Wheeling, Illinois. The company is now headquartered in Durham, North Carolina, and currently provides services for automated equipment in enterprise-level companies.
Many of the projectors shown in this film remain beloved by 16mm film collectors and users, although some B&H models require replacement of the infamous "worm gear" to operate longterm.
We encourage viewers to add comments and, especially, to provide additional information about our videos by adding a comment! See something interesting? When I was in grammar school back in the 1970's, I always became excited when my class was going to be shown an educational film. I liked watching the Bell & Howell projector in action. From 1981-82, I was a paid employee of the CENTECK Audio-Video Center at Jersey City State College (Now New Jersey City University) back in my home town of Jersey City, New Jersey. One of my duties was to deliver and set-up Bell & Howell 16mm Sound projectors in various classrooms. I would then retrieve them after the class was finished using them and return them to CENTECK. I enjoyed my work at that college. I was also a paid music disc-jockey on the college radio station, AM-740 W.J.C.S. I was "Tony Jams, Mr. Rock & Roll" on-air. I worked there for only one year. Great video. It brings back many great memories for me. Keep up the great work. Sincerely, Tony Jams, Mr. Rock & Roll @ www.youtube/anthonyjamroz.

I remember I was a teacher librarian media specialist 78-13 I had to fix them when other teachers had problems showing educational films. At one time I took care of 18 projectors both self loaders and manual feeders. I enjoyed my teaching career a lot. In Iowa education districts had thousands of 16mm films sent to schools twice a week for teachers to show. I loved servicing teachers and students films and books which are loosing to modern technology, but I like what the Internet can provide.

wow this brings back memories of running the projector for the summer camp. I was recently at a friends vacation home and they had one of these projectors and a box of films. I was the only one there that knew how to load the film and was explaining these topics in the video and to also important to run the projector bulb cooling fan for a few min after the lamp is turned off! AV geek out.

We were so excited to see one of these in the classroom. We knew we were going to be watching a film. Goof off time. And then when I started studying radio and television in collegeare college television station had one of these for the film chain island. To Bell & Howells and an RCA double drum slide projector.

1980 was the year I've operated a Singer Instaload Projector similar to the 1580 Bell and Howell model. I was eight years old at the time.

Born in '65. Remember them in school. Collectible today, these were trashed wholesale in the mid 90's. What a loss.

I only wish B&H hadn`t put that bright feature of the projection bulb on their function control switch when the projector is in run mode, because it really doesn`t add that much more light, and it just reduces the life of the bulb.

6:24 I like how they're all just out on the rocks by the sea. You need a good marketing shot? How about in some nice salty sea air that couldn't be further from the intended use for these things.

Some years ago, I knew a man who worked for his Mafia uncle as a film duplicator at an illegal porn lab in Brooklyn, New York. They made illegal copies of many 8mm-sound porn films for public sale. This was back in the 1970's when it was profitable to do that back in the Golden Age of Porn. They made great money with their illegal business. Sincerely, Tony Jams, Mr. Rock & Roll @ www.youtube/anthonyjamroz.
