This clip reminds me of the PSA ads from the 80s and 90s featuring crash test dummies (not the rock band LOL) which featured the tagline "You could learn a lot from a dummy"

The original Blues Brothers with Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi and the 1974 Dodge Monaco with the cop engine, cop shocks,cop tires,and it was built before catalytic coverters so it will run good on regular gas.

I didn't know GM was messing with passenger side air bags. I see the one in this car comes out from under the dash which I didn't expect. Fascinating.

Yep the ACRS system

Airbags were originally intended to replace seat belts, which were unpopular in the 1970s. Reliability and lack of consumer interest led to their exit until Chrysler made them standard in the late 1980s.

We didn't have airbags in our Olds 88. It didn't need them. It was big enough to power through accidents without noticing.
@bradparris992 ай бұрын
Fortunately this car had the airbags. A lot of times if you were one of the few people who buckled up, the shoulder belts had way too much slack before they locked up and your head and chest slammed into the steering wheel or the dash.

Don't be fooled into thinking this was a safe car compared to now. You were lucky to have not been in an accident.

@@bradparris99 I noticed that, my 73 didnt have 3-points to begin with and I was thinking of replacing them with some old era correct belts, watched a crash test of a 79 and they got flail chest before it locked.. Yikes!
@bradparris992 ай бұрын
@@Themanfuhreal Your 73 originally had the belts where the optional shoulder belt latched into the lap belt forming a 3-point belt. As a teenager in the mid 70's I had a 1970 Buick Electra where the lap belt had a buckle and the separate non-retractable shoulder belt had it's own buckle and I actually wore both when I drove. I found that with both belts holding me firmly in the driver's seat, I had a better feeling of the "big" ride and handling of the Electra. One night when I was hit head on by a drunk driver in a 1980 Chevrolet Suburban, I walked away from the crash due to the size and quality of the car along with the fact that I was wearing both belts which held me firmly in the driver's seat. Later 70's cars with the early inertia style 3-point belts often did not protect drivers as well as the non-retracting shoulder belts. The inertia style belts often did not lock up quickly and allowed too much slack in the shoulder belts thus allowing the driver and passenger to hit the steering wheel or dash. The original style belt for your 73, with the shoulder belt latched into the lap belt having only a fist with between the shoulder belt and your chest will offer more protection than the inertia style. I had a few friends with mid 70's cars that thought they were being responsible by wearing the inertia style 3-point belts and in collisions, they had injuries from impacting the steering wheel. Put a non-retractable shoulder belt in your car, wear it in conjunction with the lap belt and enjoy the car.

@@bradparris99 I shouldve given more context, I have a 73 Jeep J4000 that only had lap belts. I wanted to look for some non-retracting shoulder belts but I couldnt find any that would fit the vehicle, and the modern style should be good enough for me. If its my time its my time

It needed some Daft Punk musik. And seriously, those American land yachts seemed safer that the Chinese domestic market cars. Those crash test videos will kill you just by looking at them.

@@DerrickOil1978 is correct. 1972 had round headlights and was much larger. The car in the video has rectangular headlights (introduced in 1976 for the 88) and 5 mph bumpers.

It also appears to have some sort of Oldsmobile V8 in it, likely a 350 or a 403 based on the placement of the oil filter.

You have to keep in mind that this film predates the digital era. This was shot using a high speed motion picture camera that had an incredibly high frame rate -- and that made the exposure of the film very challenging.

Also with KZbin in particular I noticed if I’m watching a video that has been uploaded very recently in relation to when I am watching it, it won’t be in full quality then I’ll come back later and watch and the quality will be good. So keep that in mind I guess as well it’s not the uploaders fault.
