I grew up in Townsville and this footage is like a snapshot of my childhood. It's interesting seeing the aerial footage as the city looks so small from that view.

I was born in Townsville in Dec 1970. You forget how small it was.

I still remember the fishing spots where Reef HQ and GBRMPA (GBR Aquarium) in late 90s is today.

This was the year before Cyclone Althea hit on Christmas Eve 1971, I was 5 years old at the time, and my family were hold up at our home on the Esplanade, the house survived, but sadly the town was badly devastated.

I lived on Maggie Island from 1973-76 and would make the twice weekly trip to Townsville for shopping. Never went back until I was stationed in the Burdekin and would make a regular trip to Townsville. It still has that "large town trying to be like a big city" feeling. One of the very few fond memories of this place was abseiling down the old Nursing quarters of TGH for work training. Given the negative stories on local crime, I doubt I'll ever see Townsville again, unless taking the Douglas bypass on the way to Cairns.

Stop watching the news, get off social media too because it's making you scared. The crime is nowhere near as bad as being reported.
