An old Mopar and Hemi owner here... even today, after all these years, I still can't muster any excitement for anything Mopar after 1970. After year after that, and you can have them - even with a 440-6V or Hemi. (Personally, I'd pull those motors and put them in an earlier, more worthy Dodge/Plymouth!) I knew from the start my money would be on the Chevelle.

I'm not a big fan of Chargers before 68 n after 70, and the later ones also weighed in at around 500lbs more than the previous model years and doesn't surprise me that it lost them all. I got my first car in 1981 and was a 68, so I know a bit about them and are pretty special to me. True, but the Chrysler driver got bit by having all that gear in the second race, as he was fish tailing like crazy at the start. That's why he only ran 16 seconds in that race. He scrubbed about 500 miles off the rear tires trying to get them to grip the road.

Much more realistic ET's for "pure stock" cars. My factory original '70 Chevelle LS-5, SS-454, M-22 car ran comparable but quicker times at the drag strip than the '71 SS-454 in the video did. Maybe it was due to the 4 speed in my car, but I had a heck of a time launching the car without going up in smoke. Sure was fun beating up on those Mopars and Fords though. :)

I own a 70 LS5 SS454 with a automatic, 331 gears and it runs about the same number as the 71 in this video. Everyone drools over the LS6 engine (and rightly so) but, on the street, from stoplight to stoplight, the oval port heads of the LS5 do much better. Only at higher rpms will the square ports and solid lift cam in the LS6 be a benefit.
@MrIgor19555 жыл бұрын
@@CarsAndZebras - You would think the Charger would have the advantage with 4.10 gears vs the Chevelle's 3.31 gears. My Chevelle had 3.31 gears as well and had one heck of a time launching without a lot of tire spin. One time I short shifted from 1st to 2nd hoping to avoid going up in smoke. Big mistake. I must have shifted right at the peak torque point of the engine and the tires broke loose causing the car to get sideways about 100 to 150 feet down the strip. Sure wasn't expecting that. My best times were when I bogged the engine off the line. My best ET was 13.21 but I consistently ran 13.30's and 13.40's on street radials.

What I got from this, the chevelle has a weaker 454, problem one with 1971, the hydraulic lifters, problem two not necessarily just 1971 but this holds it back, it has weaker gearing with the 3:31, and with the auto it is pretty clear that the car is more for comfort, it’s a convertible as well, still a really nice car but this shows how it is put aside from something faster. Actually, the LS5 was just underrated in 1970. It was listed as making 360 hp in the Chevelle. Exact same engine in the Corvette was rated at 390. The truth is the engine probably made about 400 hp in 1970, especially if the owner swapped the stock cast iron exhaust manifold for just about any set of headers available. Which was a very common Day 2 upgrade back in the day.

@@CarsAndZebras Yes, the block has 6 bolt main caps, 4 vertical and 2 cross bolts on a deep skirt block. Factory forged crank. The early engines 1990 -1994 did not make much power stock, 230hp (over rated at 250hp) but had the stronger sintered connecting rods and cast pistons. 95 and up have skinny rods and lighter pistons. Best bet is turbocharge and early engine good for an honest and reliable 500rwhp if properly tuned/fuel/timing.

@CC Ryder Yes, port injection, variable valve timing on the intake as well as a dual path long/short runner intake manifold, long for low rpm torque and short for 4000-6200rpm power. Cool video and I loved watching the cars race, but @ about the 6:47 mark, the video states that engine is the "base" 440 w/4-bbl, yet at the beginning of the RT section, you state the engine is 375hp. If its the base engine, wouldn't it be 350 HP? I've always understood the 440's were; base 4-bbl @ 350 hp, "Hi-Po" 4-bbl @ 375 hp and "Six Pack" @ 390 HP. ...did something change for '71?

Sorry, but I have a hard time believing the Chevelle has the stock 1971 spec LS5 engine with a CR of 8.5:1. Based on the 1/4 mile performance, the Chevy in this video has horsepower at the wheels in the neighborhood of 285, which means roughly 365 net horsepower at the flywheel.

A handful of Six Packs/Six Barrels were sold in '72 (330 hp) before Mother Mopar pulled the plug. 1972 literature listed the three carb option, at least early on.

@jeremythompson91224 жыл бұрын
Did you see the Chevy had radials on it and the Dodge had the old bias plys on it? Huge traction advantage for the Chevelle. You can see the Charger's tires spinning all the way through first gear and it's not even a 4 speed so it's not the driver. With good tires on the Dodge that heavy convertible wouldn't stand a chance against that 440 Charger

Lol damn that charger is a friggin tank and weighs as much as my Challenger SRT8, which is shocking for the time period. I know that the b-body cars were heavier than the other platforms, but didn't think that any of them quite reached 4k. My first car was a 68 and owned two of them over the years. The curb weight on them is around 3, 600, so they definitely gained some weight with the ugly new design of 71. The second one might have weighed a little more because it was an RT, with built 440 and added six pk. 68 to 70 are hot looking, but didn't like the look much before or after that
@CarsAndZebras5 жыл бұрын
Yeah, this car is pretty heavy. You would think that it would get traction a little easier with all of that weight

Those cars without traction bars suffer severe wheel hop if you get on them too fast. Traction bars and the right shocks and sway bar could knock off second or 2 depending on track time conditions.
