I just recently turned 55 , and now I just realized that I love the simplicity of the Mavericks , especially the Grabber . It’s funny how you learn to appreciate certain things as you get older , that you didn’t appreciate when you were young . 🙂

I have a '71 Maverick Grabber with factory A/C. Mine is dark bronze color with black interior. Several years ago, I upgraded the car with a 400 HP 351 HO crate engine, C6 automatic transmission, 9" 3:70 gears Detroit Locker rear differential, and 4 wheels disc brakes from a Lincoln Versailles. It also has '65 Thunderbird sequential taillights and a flip-open gas cap that was only available in '75 Maverick as a rare option.

My dad bought one of these with the 6 cyl. for my mom after she totaled the '68 Charger R/T when I was 7. Our Grabber was Lime Green with this same 200 CI 6 cyl. Kept it 3 years. It burned oil from the time Dad bought it. That interior brought back memories.

Flash from the past. Back in the day there were Mavericks everywhere. Once rusted away, many owners opted to replace with a spiffy new Mustang II. Neither were considered great works of engineering, but this gentlemen sure seems to have enjoyed his. Cheers to him!!

This kind of relates, I had a 1968 Dodge Dart GTS, bucket seats, console, automatic, floor shift, PS, PB, A/C, blue with black interior, and 225 cubic inch, 6 cylinder. Mint condition. My father had a Pontiac, Buick GMC dealership. We had this little old lady (a sweetheart) in her 70’s that was a substitute junior high teacher, she would always stop by the dealership, even if it were just for us check the tire pressure or have the windows washes. And did tune-ups, oil changes etc. always on time. When my father was on vacation in 1974, she came in to trade for a 1974 Pontiac Ventura. I bought the 1968 Dodge Dart GTS. Before my dad saw it.

Abracadabra, I wanna reach out and grab ya! "What's a Maverick?" Boy, now I feel old! There were Mavericks galloping around everywhere when I was growing up. It's true, you don't know what you got till it's (mostly) gone. At least the Mustang still rides, and the Bronco is making a comeback (might have kept going if not for O.J.!), so thankfully Ford still has a horse theme going. Thanks to Mike for taking such great care of his cherished car for all these years, and to both of you for showing it to everyone!

Hey Lou. Lovely looking Maverick. I remember cars like this. I had a neighbour when I was a boy who had a green Maverick Grabber. I've never understood why the Maverick is so disliked by most Ford enthusiasts. This, and the Mustang II seem to be among the least favourites among car enthusiasts. I'd buy a later Maverick or a Mercury Comet if I could find a decent example.

I owned that exact car during my high school days in the early ‘80s - candy apple red, fake hood scoops, black striping accents (though I don’t remember it having the word “Grabber” on the front quarter panel stripe). Bought it from my brother in-law for $175. It had an electrical problem and before getting it fixed I had to charge up two batteries, drive somewhere, and change the battery to get home. I would love to have that car again.

Absolutely stunning! I hadn't seen anything like it, I mean, a six cylinder engine in a Mav! Not all days you can be so lucky to run into one car like this. I'm in Mexico and all Mavs around here were 8 with the legendary 302. I myself got one long ago and let me tell you, it was far better than the 72 Mustang I had too, in fact my wife who was 19 then, hated that car. It sounds crazy that part of "what is this"? ......a Ma...what? what is a Maverick anyway? Great catch for the video. Kudos to everyone. Please keep up the excellent work.

I learned to drive on a 1970 Maverick with the 200 six and manual everything. I thought the 'Grabber' meant it had a 302. I think this was the size of the first Mustang. They enlarged the Mustang so the 351 would fit. .. Yes, they all rusted out, quickly.

My grandmother bought a 1972 Maverick (it wasn't a Grabber) brand new in November of '71. I really loved that little car; it was metallic brown with a tan vinyl roof. It had an inline six (I think it was the 200-cid, not exactly sure, but it likely was). It was beautiful. I loved it as much as my grandmother did. She owned it for five years before trading it in for a 1977 Granada. The Maverick was offered from 1969 (early 1970 model) to 1977 in the U.S., before it was replaced by the Fairmont for the '78 model year.

Well done keeping that one from rusting away. My mother had basically the same car in the Mercury Comet GT (the "GT" was important to mention since it meant it had a fake hood scoop and a big black line down the middle of it) when I was in early grade school. I am almost ashamed to say that I was so ashamed of riding in that car that I asked her to drop me off a block from school so the kids wouldn't see me in it. It was slow as a dog and well rotted out from the road salt - and it was still in the 70's. It sure wasn't a very good looker. Seeing this Maverick though, I can say it doesn't look that bad other than the homely wheels. The Comet GT ended up sold for about 500 dollars, was quickly impounded, and subsequently abandoned by the new owner.

I heard that Mavericks are very unpopular there in USA. Here in Brazil they are iconic, because they were the most "muscle cars" we had produced here back in the 70's. And the "Grabber" series, we had an equivalent here named as "GT". I'm truly glad to know there are proudly Maverick owners like this gentleman there in US. I intend to open a new KZbin channel specially for talking about vintage cars, and I want to make several videos about Mavericks, detailing and explaining everything, including differences between the US versions and Brazilian versions. A very rare car indeed. Just two weeks ago, I saw a seventyish Mercury Comet, the counterpart to the Maverick. I don't think I have seen either of those cars since the eighties. They probably lasted about ten years and went into the junk yard and soon after the crusher. Since then, KZbin has been showing me videos, like this one of Mavericks. It wasn't a car that I had any interest in owning at the time. The only time I ever road in one, I dropped my car off at the dealership in the morning before school for a clutch replacement. They had an employee give me a ride to school in a brand new 70 Maverick. It reminded of a 60 Falcon very basic on the interior, thee on the tree transmission.

Check out the movie "Dazed And Confused" ...for a red grabber as this, at cruise drive-in food lot and near ending. You won't see one every day. When NEW, in upstate NY, where this one is from....most Mavericks were 4 doors, with a CB radio...in case stuck in snow.

Most of the Mavericks were 170 or 200 or 250 cube straight sixes. The 302 cube V-8 @ 210 HP became available in 1971. The '71 Mustang with the same 302 (0-60=9.9 sec, 17.5 @ 78 Motor Trend) weighed at least 400 lbs more than the Maverick so no contest. Mavs really ate into Mustang sales, so they increased the Grabber price a bunch. I have a '70 Mav with a 302 with 260 real horses, AOD, and a 9-inch that weighs 2850 lbs. It's rare and a blast to drive. Ex drag car, I suspect. 50 yrs old.

How the heck did he keep this Maverick so nice in upstate NY! I guess it only sees summer driving. I too remember the Mavericks, we were stunned that the cars didn't have a glove box, just that lower "shelf". But, the real reason I remember the little red Maverick so well is because of our brand new social studies teacher: "Miss Kirkly", she had one...All of us star struck school boys were quite taken by young Miss Kirkly, so I'm sure we all remember the Mavericks for the same reason....Actually, they weren't bad looking little cars....
