1971 Ford Mustang BOSS 351 - Muscle Car Of The Week Episode 292
This 1971 Ford Mustang BOSS 351 is quite a ride, with it’s high-compression, heavy-breathing 351 Cleveland building 330 HP horsepower and competition suspension. This one is also different in that it wears a special order color, and shows less than 900 original miles! From The Brothers Collection.

The 71 Boss 351 is definitely probably my favorite Mustang, whatta Performer with that insane Cleveland for 71. And for some reason i always liked a 68 Fastback with a 428 CJ and Top Loader 4 Speed, White with Blue Stripes just like the Shelby Mustangs, to pay tribute to the 68 Stock Eliminator Winning NHRA Winternationals Mustangs. But my Favorite Ford is probably the 70 Torino Cobra with a 429 SCJ 4 Speed Drag Pak Car. Would Love to have one for a Weekend Cruiser.

My older neighbors (street racers from Brooklyn NY)were my introduction to my love of muscle cars. Between them and their Friends W-30 442, 340 Demon, W-31 442, 70 Z/28’s and SS 396 Chevelles was a 71 Boss 351 Mustang which with Fords factory rev-limiter disconnected was just as fast if not faster than the LT-1 Z/28. I can't get enough of these 71 to 73 Mustangs. The Mach 1 429 thats in the brothers collection is the same one my father had, right down to the graber blue paint and the dog dish hub caps. Unfortunately my father's brother drove it one night and parked it on the beach and within a year the car was destroyed, the only thing my father had left to show was pictures. Well it was a gorgeous car.

There is one documented 1971 boss 302 that was never released, it was re - engineered and re numbered, by Ford to a standard Mustang fastback, not even a Mach 1. The parts were made and cataloged, and even stocked, but only one car is known to be produced. I've seen 1971 boss 302 crate motors, and my days in a garage, have seen mechanics Chilton manuals with the specs...but that one cars been found and restored to its original boss 302 configuration.

Thanks for the Upload, !! Being a teenager in the 70's & From a Dyed in the Wool G.M Family of Course me being the Blacksheep as far as performance, @ the Drags I, was a Dodge/Plymouth Fan & some Fords & I've been fortunate & over the yrs. Had performance models from the Big 3 over the yrs, Being a Fan of all 3 CERTAIN models, But I remember all the Big 3 around 1973/74 started having there THROATS cut by the Insurance Companies, the mustang/camaro/charger Were all Huge cars with 250 to 450 Hp. with a Hemi or 454 , To Myself though Ford Had it together the Best they could like the rest of the other car company's @ the time they were sharp with the colors & stripes , But like the rest there days in the Sun were long gone & they were all Underpowered TANKS !!.. & Now there just finally appearing on the Muscle Car Radar. With that said, Can anyone Explain if INSURANCE KILLED THEM BK IN THE DAY TO THE POINT MY LEGIT 1968 CHEVY Z/28 Camaro 302 POWERD SUPPOSED TO APPEASE THE INSURANCE COMPANIES THEY RATED IT @ 290 HORSEPOWER FOR INSURANCE COMPANIES ALTHOUGH IT WAS ACTUALLY AROUND 400 HORSEPOWER, MY QUESTION IS IF THEY THE INSURANCE COMPANIES SHUT DOWN THE FUN @ THE END OF THE 1960'S TO EARLY 70'S WITH TO HIGH OF HORSEPOWER & TO MUCH POLLUTION, HOW DO THEY GET BY WITH IT TODAY IN A AWESOME TIME WERE A TEENAGE IF THEY HAVE THE COINS CAN STROLL INTO CHEVY / DODGE / OR FORD & AFTER SIGNING 2-K TIMES CAN LEAVE THE DEALERSHIP SIDE-WAYS SMOKING THE TIRES OFF ON A NOT UNCOMMON ( 500 ) HORSEPOWER NEW CAR. I MEAN ITS AS ALL TIMES A GREAT TIME TO BE ALIVE ESPECIALLY IF U, HAVE A MONEY TREE LOL. BUT IVE JUST WONDERED HOW INSURANCE BULLSHIT IS DIFFERENT FROM THEN TO NOW & COULD THEY BE A BUZZ KILL LIKE BEFORE IN THE MUSCLE CAR MARKET

j swan I owned a 70 351 Cleveland 4 barrel Mach 1, quality control was terrible. Door gaps, fender gaps, hood gaps. Then bought a 73 Mach 1 with the same engine, it was a dream. Don't know why, but everything on the 73 was perfect. The 70 was fast, but cheaply built, after 3 years it was ready to be junked (body wise) the engine was still very fast. Your point about the driver side door stripes was right on the money. Ever notice the hoods on 69 and 70 Mustangs? None, not one ever made, matched the level of the fenders.

I wanted one bad when they came out autumn 70. But I was in college and $4k plus was an impossible amount for me. Flash forward to 1992 and I bought a 17k mile Texas car in close to new shape and completely stock with Saginaw power steering. Compression checked out ok, valve lash was done to perfection, carb overhauled, and ignition was all fresh Motorcraft. It was fun to drive, in a truckish sort of way. The whole car seemed to be set up for stoplight racing...period. I was disappointed however in the open highway and passing performance, as the motor had soft midrange torque. And all that stiff gearing, which was a kick 0-60, made for unpleasant highway cruising in 21st century America. Cruising at 5000 rpm just to stay ahead of the mini vans on your butt is no way to enjoy a classic. As much as I love the Cleveland it is a victim of Ford's screwball engineering of that era. The ports are just too damned big. Ford's better idea for the late 60s was to copy the canted valve Chevy rat motor heads and put them on every thing from 302s to 429s. So now some 351c owners resort to special plates to choke down the size of the intake and exhaust ports. Chevy had it right with their heads on the LT-1 engines of the time...good breathing but with reasonable midrange response and torque on the street. I know because I have a 70 LT-1 Vette

I think Bob Glidden validated that fact quite well for Ford in NHRA competition during the 70's.

And was Capable of high 13's down the 1320 in stock trim. And don't forget, this is the same motor that Bob Glidden totally dominated Pro Stock with back in the 70's ! 4 bolt main 351 Cleveland. A big reason that the '71 mustang was "up sized" was so that it could accommodate the 385 series 429 engines including the BOSS 429. But Bunkie got fired at Ford, Ford dropped support for racing, and the high performance 429 engines were pulled from production.

Let's see now, the owner was filthy rich and probably had any car he wanted. Maybe drove a Ferrari or Hemi Cuda? Who knows. I'll bet he wanted to keep it original as an investment. If storage was essentially free what do you think the return on investment was? $4500 in 1971, sold for $100,000 thirty years later? Nice addition to the retirement fund.

I like the '71. Impossible blind spot in the rear but, big deal, ya live with it. Ford was "cheapening" out the interior, not totally, but that nondescript steering wheel is a travesty in the sport models, especially a "BOSS." But, GM did it, so did Chrysler at this stage of the game with the interiors.

Boy the Brothers must have paid handsomely for this car. The '71 Mustangs it has been said were really the best riding Stangs, and what a bold design. It is a shame so few of these Bosses were built, Ford should have offered an automatic version and would probably have at least doubled their production. The standard 351 Cleveland 4-Barrel in 1971 was also a high compression engine with a specific intake and heads, a sound performer, very much different than the 2V car, and really a great car to acquire.

Minor correction here: The B351 did NOT have an optional body color bumper. It was chrome bumper only for that model. There are no documented B351's with the urethane Mach 1 bumper for 71. In 72, as part of the optional decor group that bumper though became available on all body styles. For 71 though, the urethane bumper was ONLY on the Mach 1 AND the spring sport coupe.

My first car was a black/black 71 Boss. I was 17 when my dad handed me the keys! he bought it when I was 15 in 1976 for $1,200.00! He used to tell me I was going to wax the paint off the thing because I kept it shinning every weekend with a lot of elbow grease and Kit car wax! Unfortunately a bad man came buy our house on Sunday as we all ate supper. He made my dad an offer for the car he couldn't refuse and I saw half my heart drive out of my world that day, I was sick.... about 6 months later and many disappointing test drives my dad blew my mind again and tossed me a set of keys to an immaculate 1 owner 69 SS 396 Nova! What a beast! But That black stallion stole my heart! I have had many mustangs since and currently driving a 2015 Ecoboost. Love the looks, love the mileage but miss the horses...

He’s completed half the job as he asked and expects to be paid for his time. The guy doesn’t wanna pay because he didn’t get another engine. Just put the engine back in. man what an awesome car. one reason for the size increase for '71 was Bunkie Knudsen's belief that American's wanted big engines...which they did. to get the 429 into the Mustang took a bigger space between the shock towers. which, to keep it proportional, required a bigger car all around. my '70, with a big-port Cleveland, is almost impossible to get #2 and #3 plugs out...a 429 would not have fit...which is also why the 70 Mustang had a 428 while all the other BB '70 Fords were 429's. The first '71 I saw, as an 10 year old back when they were new, was a grabber green sportsroof...I was amazed at the flat rear window...thought it was the coolest thing ever. A '71, esp the Boss, would be very cool.
