I think it was was the coolest and prettiest car I've ever owned. It was so fun to drive, and it was very, very fast. My first car was a black/black 71 Boss. I was 17 when my dad handed me the keys! he bought it when I was 15 in 1976 for $1,200.00! He used to tell me I was going to wax the paint off the thing because I kept it shinning every weekend with a lot of elbow grease and Kit car wax! Unfortunately a bad man came buy our house on Sunday as we all ate supper. He made my dad an offer for the car he couldn't refuse and I saw half my heart drive out of my world that day, I was sick.... about 6 months later and many disappointing test drives my dad blew my mind again and tossed me a set of keys to an immaculate 1 owner 69 SS 396 Nova! What a beast! But That black stallion stole my heart! I have had many mustangs since and currently driving a 2015 Ecoboost. Love the looks, love the mileage but miss the horses...

My dad had a Boss 351 almost exactly like this. He drove his 1966 Ford Galaxie 500 with a 390 about 400 miles to trade for a boss 351 with a blown motor. He swapped the engine with a 351 Cobra Jet in a motel parking lot and drove it back home.

Boy the Brothers must have paid handsomely for this car. The '71 Mustangs it has been said were really the best riding Stangs, and what a bold design. It is a shame so few of these Bosses were built, Ford should have offered an automatic version and would probably have at least doubled their production. The standard 351 Cleveland 4-Barrel in 1971 was also a high compression engine with a specific intake and heads, a sound performer, very much different than the 2V car, and really a great car to acquire.

fyi, the '71 Boss 351 held the quickest stock 1/4 time of any production Ford up to that time and held the title until some of the more modern supercharged cobra mustangs eclipsed it after several decades. man what an awesome car. one reason for the size increase for '71 was Bunkie Knudsen's belief that American's wanted big engines...which they did. to get the 429 into the Mustang took a bigger space between the shock towers. which, to keep it proportional, required a bigger car all around. my '70, with a big-port Cleveland, is almost impossible to get #2 and #3 plugs out...a 429 would not have fit...which is also why the 70 Mustang had a 428 while all the other BB '70 Fords were 429's. The first '71 I saw, as an 10 year old back when they were new, was a grabber green sportsroof...I was amazed at the flat rear window...thought it was the coolest thing ever. A '71, esp the Boss, would be very cool.

The 351 Cleveland had a boatload of power and got MUCH better MPG than the big blocks. I consider it to be the best engine Ford ever made.

I love the 1971 Mustang, especially the Mach 1 and the Boss 351. Having one with that low mileage makes me wonder... Who would marry a virgin and say "Look at my virgin" 48 years later? Different world from the one I live in.
@danzervos76063 жыл бұрын
The 351 Cleveland was the muscle car engine. The 351 Windsor was the family sedan engine. The Cleveland was substantially larger and had heads with staggered valves. For some cars like the Cougar and Mustang, if you ordered the 351 engine you got the Cleveland, but for other models you could get either one depending I guess on which engines were available when the car was assembled. Out of curiosity I looked up the prices for the various components of the two engines and even though you were getting a lot more iron with the Cleveland, everything was priced the same for the two different engines. The Cleveland was the basis for the 400 CID engine but as cars were downsized, the Cleveland was dropped and the Windsor stayed in production.

I love the car of the week. It reminds me of my first car - a '71 pewter Mach 1 with a vermilion interior and a 351C-4C that received bigger carb, very hot cam, 12.45:1 pistons, bored to 357 CID with a higher stall converter and 3.91 gears. I miss that old car. I tried to find it but ended up buying a '70 Mach 1 instead.

There is one documented 1971 boss 302 that was never released, it was re - engineered and re numbered, by Ford to a standard Mustang fastback, not even a Mach 1. The parts were made and cataloged, and even stocked, but only one car is known to be produced. I've seen 1971 boss 302 crate motors, and my days in a garage, have seen mechanics Chilton manuals with the specs...but that one cars been found and restored to its original boss 302 configuration.

j swan I owned a 70 351 Cleveland 4 barrel Mach 1, quality control was terrible. Door gaps, fender gaps, hood gaps. Then bought a 73 Mach 1 with the same engine, it was a dream. Don't know why, but everything on the 73 was perfect. The 70 was fast, but cheaply built, after 3 years it was ready to be junked (body wise) the engine was still very fast. Your point about the driver side door stripes was right on the money. Ever notice the hoods on 69 and 70 Mustangs? None, not one ever made, matched the level of the fenders.

So he pulls the engine while the guy gets the engine and changeover kit for the engine mounts. Weeks go by and dad finally gets ahold of the guy. He says he changed his mind because the mount kit were more than he felt like paying. He wants the engine put back in. Dad says he will, but the agreement was for the engine. He’s completed half the job as he asked and expects to be paid for his time. The guy doesn’t wanna pay because he didn’t get another engine. Just put the engine back in. He doesn’t appreciate he’s asking for free work. Eventually, they came to an agreement. Guy got a 2bbl 302 and automatic dropped into his car and dad got the Boss engine and trans

Never really liked the '71-'73 Mustangs, much preferred the '69s, but this is a beautiful car. With the popularity of the '69-'70s, couldn't understand why Ford would change the body style so quickly, and to make it so much different than what Mustangs were originally meant to be. If someone wanted a larger car, they could just get a Torino GT, even one with a Cobra Jet engine.

A mach I version of this model was the first Mustang I saw at 19 that blew me away. I do like these a lot, but the 69 is my favorite. I'm kind of glad they changed it when they did because that means there are less 69's out there. One thing I love about old cars is that they changed or tweaked them every year. I like the 70 as well, but just the two minor changes they made I don't care for that much, but I love that every year back then the muscle cars would get changed. Nowadays they keep the same one for years and years with o change. But yeah, the 69 is amazing looking.

70 vs 73? No wonder your Dart would kill a 73 mach 1. The 73 Mach 1 was emission choked to death. I had a 73 mach 1.. 351 2v. It was NOT fast. It had 2.73s in the rear, even slower. A 73 Mustang 351 car getting stomped by any 1970 car would not surprise me. That said, my M code 71 mach 1... with the beefy early year 351 4v, your 70 dart would have a very different car to contend with. Same body lines, 71 much more aggressive and powerful.
