1971 Motocross - Luxembourg GP - Ettelbruck - Roger DeCoster

Ake Jonsson on Maico and Belgian Roger DeCoster on Suzuki in a cut-throat fight that turned in favour of the Swedish. But his victory was tainted by rumors of cheating, he would have changed bikes between the 2 heats. However the F.I.M. jury declared him the winner.

I raced a vet series about 10 years ago. One guy was a pro from the 70's. The guy was scary fast on a modern bike. So few know how great these riders were....and equally talented.

Went to the Canadian GP in Copetown Ontario, WAAAAAAY back 😊 the track was on rolling hills , course was layed out with snow fence!!!! When Decoster, Wolsink and Karsmakers started practice, IT WAS ALL GRASS!!!! no tire tracks !!!❤👍👍👍🏍🏍🏍🏍🏍🏁

I had the incredible opportunity, several times to ride with Jammin Jimmy Weinert who practiced at our local track. His parents owned a TRIUMPH motorcycle dealership and when he came home from the Pro-Circuit races, we got to mix it up with him. Or should I say, he passed us lap after lap like the amateurs we were. It was a honor to eat his roost. 🏍🏍🏍🏍🏍

In '67, I took off in the expert 250 final at a TT scrambles at Maybrook, N.Y. and held the lead for about three laps on a new F2-1M Kawasaki out of Hudson Valley Cycles. Jimmy cruised by me on the downhill, sweeping left hander and my concentration got so defeated, ending up 4th. Jimmy at that time was getting a lot of pushing from family members as I recall - he was so lithe and determined.

Amazing video, or it was film, and from 1971! Roger was my hero as a 9 year old kid and was so crazy about motorcycles and motocross even before I had my own mini cycle. My dad brought home a Yamaha GTI80 on my birthday in 1973, still best day of my life. My parents weren't too thrilled when my brother stripped, lights, blinkers, speedo, the 2nd week I had the bike!

I was lucky enough to be there that day. Also at the same circuit when Roger de Coster finished his Grand Prix career on a Honda with yet another victory. (1980?) What a career and what a rider!!

Wow! What an honor to have been able to be at both those events! especially his last GP. I had what I consider a honor to have been present at Bob Hannahs last race at Unadilla in 1989. He was my motocross hero when I started racing in 1977. For me those were the golden years of mx. I dont race any longer but still follow the U.S. Nationals and GPs.

I was also lucky to see his last race in Ettelbrück in August 1980. It was the year I started my own small amateur live in MotoCross-Racing at the age of 16. ...what an indiscribable area of motorsports.. Loved It soo much ❤

Lloyd Tuggle - I raced at Whitney. That was a great track. Brad Lackey and Gerritt Wolsink were there also if I am thinking of the same race. Perhaps Jim Weinert as well.

I loved my 77 RM 250 AFTER The TM My brother had a 73 125 TM and when i turn 14 I bought my 77 Rm 250 that thing raped people then A few years later I bought my 79 leftover RM 250 AND I loved it then a 84 Yz 490 still loved my RM over that and a 83 CR 480 best bike was Rm 250 77 or 79 wish I still had thoses where the days. time flies peps skip school and go blasting on the old Rm with clots racing fuel with 110 cam fuel

Yeah, I had a Suzuki 400... believe me, it was one scary beast. About 50 horses that fell like a hammer, with the suspension of an Ace 90, handling was a nightmare.... the one(s) DeCoster rode only sort of “looked” like the showroom models.

3:37 I was curious to notice this front suspension, extending beyond the wheel axle, which is something that only became common much later in the 1970s. Is this a Maico? CZ?

Those were Maicos. They were first with the leading front axle. I owned three Maicos, and always thought they tracked better in sand and mud than bikes without this feature. Other manufacturers followed suit, but Maico was first.

Maico was the first bike back then to have leading axle forks allowing longer travel while maintaining sufficient overlap between the fork tubes and sliders. Leading axle forks did not give better tracking in the sand just because of that. Front end geometry (rake and trail) affected steering and stability. Maico was the first to have laid-down rear shocks also for longer travel. Interesting fact is that mountain bikes followed suit as well many years later.
