I know exactly where I was for this game...at my Grandmas house in Rural Southern Alberta. It was Easter and all the relatives were gathered in the living room in front a Black & White TV with reception that would sometimes fade for minutes at a time. It would have been pot luck Easter Lunch with all the usual fair. Everyone eating in their laps or (for us kids) at a fold up card table. All of my Family on my father's side were generations of dyed in the wool Leaf fans...but as a kid I really liked the Blackhawks...they were my team and still are. It was also the season (as shown by the commercial) of the Esso Power Players. For an Easter present I got the Power player Super Album and a friend of my dad's owned the local Esso station so I got handfuls of player packets to use or trade...I almost filled the album with that windfall... Which was a relief for my dad as he was Shell man and was forced to buy Esso gas so I could get power players. I remember my mom wanted to send me out of the room whenever there was a fight...but that wasn't going to happen. Funny to be watching these games from my living room in Prague...who would have thought that might be possible.

So many great Ranger players of that era never got their name etched on the Cup.
@orbyfan3 жыл бұрын
The Rangers must have been one of the first teams--if not the first--to have their names on their jerseys. They were made mandatory for 1977-78, although the Leafs held out until mid-season.
@nhlovertimes7303 жыл бұрын
And then I think Harold Ballard made the lettering the same colour as the jersey!
@swmartin19603 жыл бұрын
I think the New York Americans back in the 1920s had players’ names on the back of the jerseys. I believe the All Star jerseys in 1969 had the names on them .But the Rangers (from 70-71) were the first regular in the modern era.
@donhuber91312 жыл бұрын
Along with advertising on the boards, names on the jerseys is hideous visual clutter. It also dumbed down fans so that they did not have to become knowledgeable.

1:48 - I had one of those. I remember getting close to "full book". I could never find Fred Barret and Lou Angotti. I had to send away to the company in Don Mills to get those. I remember having 7 Tim Hortons for some reason.
@orbyfan3 жыл бұрын
I did have the full book, if you include the photos that were already there. Somewhere I still have the paperback album; there was a larger and more expensive hardcover edition. That was the best promotion Esso ever had, and I don't know why they did it only once.
@mike196212 Жыл бұрын
I managed to get the whole set. Friend of mine,like yourself,ended up two players short. Found out several years ago(two books at a card show) that the books were not the same when it came to the photos you got for free,the ones you didn't have to collect. Then again,true completists would have gone after these as well. I wasn't that determined. Two friends of mine,brothers,often got up to ''mischief'' and got several of the stamps for me---without gas purchases via their Dad. Never asked any questions. lol.

Why do most NHL games before 1974 look like they were recorded in the 1890s?
@brianjones76603 жыл бұрын
look at :08 sec. it says CBC Kine.....kinescope was a means of recording by putting a camera on a video monitor and shooting it live. its a second generation recording so it lost some quality . If you do it over again it gets worse...
@leafyutube3 жыл бұрын
@@brianjones7660 Did they think nobody would ever want to watch these games ever again? Why not preserve them in the same quality in which they were broadcast (i.e. color broadcast)? That's what was done in baseball. Many quality games exist from after about 1965 in baseball (many are on KZbin). Clearly the hockey broadcasting people at CBC had no vision.
@Lava19643 жыл бұрын
@@leafyutube That's exactly right: TV networks all across North America saw no value in saving old sports broadcasts. The videotapes were often taped over with other programming. This was the case through to about 1976. There is no known copy of the broadcast of Super Bowl I, for example. MLB was not much better. The first two games of the 1969 World Series were thought to be lost but, luckily, copies were discovered in the CBC archives as black-and-white kinescopes. Several games from the 1972 World Series do not exist.

Leafs had a defenseman named Jim Dore (pronounced Do-ree). I always wondered if his friend called him "Hunky."

I can't find any mention of it anywhere. I think hockey players may have been a little more original with nicknames then, unlike now, when they think "Smitty" is clever.
