A wonderful post!! Probably the most memorable Tony telecast of all. Interesting that some performances were live, and others were prerecorded. For me, Raitt and Florence Henderson stood out- their voices soared. But the King and I and 1776 numbers really captured the show.

For all of us "older folks" (71), many of these performances are truly loving memories of certain shows we saw. Man of La Mancha was the first Broadway show I ever saw, and still remains my favorite of all. Shows on Broadway weren't priced as outrageous as they are today, this enabling the average Joe to enjoy them. I'm grateful that I was able to see so many "classics" as I did. The Broadway musical and/or play is one of America's highest art forms!
@iHeartsNostalgiaPit Жыл бұрын
yeah it's kind of ridiculous but I'm guessing the theatre rent is also expensive now too, also doesn't help that so many shows were decimated by COVID not even Phantom of the Opera was safe as it will close next year, and even if it does get some sort of revival Hal Prince is no longer alive to show doctor it
@kevincrashkelly10 жыл бұрын
I do not watch the Tony Awards anymore....but most of this is classic...even I like this....Yul Brenner is great in this. So is Zero. So is Robert Preston. To Dream The Impossible Dream. Carol Channing in Hello Dolly....There is some very great stuff on this, and the award show people don't speak to long, I like that. ...but I remember this 25th Anniversary was special, and it still is. ....They mention McCarthyism in 1950's, and here is blacklisted Zero back and rare footage of him live on stage at his best. Both songs he nails. Yul Brenner doing the dance. Seeing them live on stage, that's what makes it. To bad Julie Andrews not in this or Mary Martin and others, but this is still a great collection of rare live greats.
@dianaaljadeff29833 жыл бұрын
Ethel Merman wasnt there because she wasnt in any winner musical. Mary Martin Julie Andrews and Barbara Cook werent there but Robert Preston was and Florence Henderson who was Martin understudy and made The Sound of Music touring performances and the tittle song

I sort of felt sorry for all the winners and nominees in comedies and straight plays, but the American Theater Wing was figuring out how to get people to watch the show and come to Broadway. That was to show scenes from the musicals containing songs that all adults in 1971 knew, but maybe never knew came from Broadway. The scenes from musicals still highlight the Tonys today. So many iconic moments that we can't see anywhere else. The timing between Brynner and Morison when he says, "Was like this." Awkward silence. Click. Their relationship has changed. The great Gwen Verdon all over the place. Bobby Morse flirting with himself. Robert Preston reprising that extremely complicated song as skillfully as ever. Carol Channing with that emotional soliloquy before the familiar triumphant song. Zero plus Zero equalling infinity. Tom Bosley in multiple languages. Leslie Uggams belting out "Now's the Time" in a rare TV performance of a song from Hallelujah, Baby! All the others. And the fantastic ad lib by Angela Lansbury when the smoke bomb went off at the wrong time. The reactions to the funny lines in the songs by these insiders in the audience whose fancies were tickled once again are precious. My only big quibble: that horrible camera angle used sometimes on the hosts when they were over on the left. Whoever had the idea of photographing them up from kneecap level hopefully never had that idea again. I guess it's not surprising, but it's sad that so many are gone, most recently Carol Channing. I'd just like to mention that the music director, Elliot Lawrence, is still with us. He conducted a million awards shows and other specials, and was involved with ten Broadway musicals, winning a Tony for his work on How to Succeed in Business without Really Trying. One of the many mostly unsung Broadway heroes. Thanks to MissPoochSmooch for all these precious videos.

Scary that Gypsy came in at least 3rd in 1960! But why is Florence Henderson singing sound of music? Mary Martin wasn't available? Is that the only one without the original actor? What about the Nuns?
@dianaaljadeff29833 жыл бұрын
Mark Raphelson Florence Henderson sang The Sound of Music because she played Maria on touring performances at the same time than Mary Martin was playing Maria on Broadway

I know I should know this, but must ask: Who is playing Miss Anna in the KING AND I excerpt? It couldn't be Patricia Morrison could it? It's not the original, of course, since Gertrude Lawrence had died before this broadcast. I have vague memories of happening upon this broadcast, as an early adolescent, and knowing that this world, full of these people, was where I wanted to be. I may well have seen some of the earlier Tonys--probably did--but this is the first one I remember for sure seeing. It is a shame, indeed, that there were no performances from that years' nominees, either musicals or plays. Random thoughts: They really moved things along at a nice clip, and no overlong acceptance speeches--I wonder how they managed that. Also, the performers don't even take a single bow. I guess it all adds up. John Raitt sounded glorious here, and continued to do so for quite a few years after. Funny that Stanley Holloway had to sing "For Pete's sake, get me to the church...." I wonder how that camera operator felt when he (she?) realized the wrong person was being featured on screen when the actress who won Best Featured Actress in a Play stood up--right behind the woman they'd been showing when Rae Allen's name was read. Check out the leg room revealed in those overhead on the audience shots--you won't find that kind of thing in Broadway theaters nowadays! I wonder how many (if any) of the chorus dancers and singers, in the excerpts that have them, are actually original cast members from the show; some of them look about the right ages to be. Gwen Verdon was still very much an accomplished, bravura dancer here, and still had CHICAGO ahead of her (not to mention COCOON, other movies and such). Assuming none of the broadcast is missing from this, it's funny that they had laughter and reactions from commercial break goings-on, when returning to the broadcast (eg. from about 54:53). Loved Florence Henderson in SOUND OF MUSIC; since Mary M. couldn't do it, for whatever reason. Funny, how Carol Channing speaks of lyricists and book writers, she emphasizes that either one of those is "the MAN who...." Especially for lyricists, this seems silly, and would have, even back then. Nice, all the great love for Maureen Stapleton and Stephen Sondheim.

Patricia Morison sang the Shall we dance scne with Yul Brynner because she played the role of Anna with Brynner after Gertrude Lawrence death.Morison played her in.the last performances in 1952 and 1953..So only her should do the number with Brynner in this tribute. Florence Henderson sang The Sound of Music song because she was Mary Martin understudy and played the role in touring performances when Martin was on Broadway.

likely they wanted to just focus on the treasure trove of the shows that won best musical (and to be fair they didn't televise the Tony Awards until 1967) yes it is a shame that none of the shows nominated for Best Musical got love. But at least Company got some love at the 2011 Tonys. If anything the winner should have performed at the end like at the end of the 2010 Tony awards
