I remember watching this live and thinking Herman was rude to Sondheim in his acceptance speech. But nowadays, I understand Herman's perspective a bit more. He's referring to not just Sondheim, but to the many composers of the 1970s who found success while Herman became "old hat". Andrew Lloyd Webber, Stephen Schwartz, and other composers of the rock opera era were enjoying critical/popular success and Herman, who had been the toast of Broadway a mere 10 years earlier, found himself regarded as a dinosaur. The success of "La Cage" must have been exhilarating and life-affirming to him, and therefore his self-congratulatory speech. And Herman was right about the beauty of his score: as much as I love Sondheim and the "Sunday" OBC recording, it's "La Cage" that has more plays on my iPod.
@marcevan11415 жыл бұрын
Sorry man, I saw La Cage and hated it...Sunday in the Park is flawed but often beautiful and Sondheim's score is miles above Herman's

La Cage is a horribly offensive musical about pretending to be something you're not to please others, with a feeble to attempt to make the whole thing palatable by throwing in I Am What I Am. I absolutely hated the idea and execution of this musical then and I still do. Sunday was transcendant art by artists in full flight. La Cage was ... popular.

Geez you Sondheim fanboys are rude
@HaunaMyKiki2 жыл бұрын
@@Kiltdon If _that's_ what you got out of La Cage, then idk what to say. Yes, that's the _conflict_ of the show, but it's poised as something that is ultimately wrong to do. It's a happy ending about pushing past the bs of the people around you to unapologetically be your own person. I agree that Sunday is the more important of the two shows, but I like them both!

1984 was much like 1991 where you had incredible scores (Sunday in the Park with George in 84 and Miss Saigon in 91) which were overlooked because other shows (La Cage and Will Rogers Follies) had messages which were more timely. In 1984, the gay community was front and center because the AIDS crisis was in critical mode, and in 1991, we had just won the Gulf War and patriotism was very high. I don’t think it was about competition. I think it was the climate of our culture which caused losses for Sunday in the Park and Miss Saigon. Also, Jerry Herman was quite rude in his acceptance speech for best score. It was clear he was taking a shot at Sondheim. Sondheim went on to debut 5 more Broadway shows following this night and won Tonys for 2 of those shows. Herman never wrote a show again. As of writing this, both men are in their late 80’s and have less than a year of age between them. Sondheim has 8 Tonys and Herman has 6.
