I have a 74 Baja bug with 31” tires on the back, that thing will go anywhere in the snow even if it’s up to the hood.

My parents had a 1973 Super Beetle that was great in snow, and was extremely reliable even in the brutal winters we would always have in the mountains of Vermont. What wasn’t so great was the heater sucked, as soon as my father found out about aftermarket heaters he had one installed and it was Heaven, it was so powerful that you would have to turn the temperature down after the car got warm, otherwise it was sweltering in there.

In 1982 I bought a Orange 1973 Super Beetle with a semi-automatic for $1200 with 73k. I miss that car. I searched for a log time to find one without a blown backseat top sun and rusted running boards. Replaced tie rods @75k. No other repairs . I drove it for 2 years and sold to a family member who kept it for 5 more with no issues.

It's all about the tires. My 1960 VW Beetle with Firestone Town and Country Snow Tires (long ago discontinued) would go in deep snow right up to the bumpers. It was a Beast in the snow! The Firestone advertising slogan for those tires during the 1960's was "You go through ice, mud and snow, or we pay the tow". During or after a bad snowstorm, I would drive right by dozens of front engine/rear wheel drive cars stuck in the snow, sometimes right in the middle of the road.

My first car was a ‘68 beetle, rusted all out, and I still loved it. Watching this POV made me wistful about my old 4 on the floor!!

Back in the day a Volkswagen beetle was considered pretty good in the snow mostly because contemporary vehicles were unbelievably awful in the snow. Not only because they were mostly rear Drive, but also because most had open differentials, and the tires back then were unbelievably useless. Particularly tires that were called snow tires.

I daily a 94 f-150 and it has an open diff on it. with modern tires I don't really have to go into 4x4 as long as I don't goose it while driving or lock up my brakes i'm just fine. I drive in in the snow all the time and I live in the rockies.

I drove a air cooled VW for 20 years as a daily driver in Colorado with snow tires and studs on the road I never had a problem. Let’s be realistic with these type of test.

When new, the 71 Super Beetle's steering wheel was glossy black, not white. I had one.

I had one in the 70s. It was automatic but with a shifter on the floor that had two speeds. People could not figure how to drive it.

Enjoyed the video, but my question is with all the trucks in the fleet you don't have one with a plow for the driveway?!?

You could hook the camera to a hat so you don’t have to wear the helmet.

Colorado looks beautiful. Very little traffic on the road. Of the cars you did pass they must of thought who is that idiot driving a convertable with the roof down with temperatures below zero. Great car. Miss my aircooled Beetles i had in the late 60s early 70s. Moved on to water coolled models now. Wish i had room for an aircooled cab. though.🏴🏴

Generally speaking, for an area where there is snowing, you have very bad tires, on all vehicles...by proper tires!
