Derby v Spurs, a full blooded game on their notorious pitch, tackling that made you wince but no complaints by players, that Perryman on Gemmill one & Archie just got up & carried on. Great days when football was a man's game. Roger Davies was a good player who had skill similar to Peter Crouch.

What a pleasant change to see honest footballers just wanting to get on with and play the game rather than rolling around and acting like they've been shot. And hardly anybody disputing the ref's decision and getting on with the game even if the decision might not have been correct. Imagine how good these lads would have been on today's pitches too.

Great to see and hear the old shed. Chelsea at this time were going through alot of problems. Their new stand almost crippled the club with debts and the team declined for the next 10 or so years cause of this. CHELSEA BLUE

The Shed. What a horrible stand, propped up with wooden stanchions, it looked like something out of War of the Worlds! Stamford Bridge with its greyhound racing & kop stands so far away, for me it just was like football was treated second best, look at Spurs Arsenal West Ham it felt designed for football as Stamford Bridge was such a hopscotch of structures. Sorry Chelsea fans I know you will disagree, it's your club, now it's much better of course but everywhere now grounds are so homogeneous, like shopping in supermarkets. Bring back the SHED!!

Brian Moore best football commentator ever, boy when he got excited by a great goal, he got excited. When Derby's pitch became a quagmire (by November usually!), the footy became even more enjoyable. Unlike today's pitches when, come April, the pitch looks the same from the season's opening game. No variation. Tedious.

I suspect Chelsea playing in red was due to television coverage and the fact a lot of people would still be watching in black and white at the time. The kits for both teams would have been chosen on how best to tell them apart on a black and white TV.

Gordon Hill , the Referee in the Chelsea v Ipswich game proves that Refs were better in the 1970's without VAR and other technology than they are today . This Ref was on top of the game , was fair , and strict when it needed it

I am all for digital imaging technology, but long gone are the days when you accepted a referee's decision, but if it was wrong, you "sorted it out" amicably with the referee after the match, over a drink, and shook hands afterwards Nowadays, everything MUST be on camera, and it makes we wonder if they brought var in because 95% claim to have filmed it on their phones/tablets etc etc, and are scared of 42,865 uploads here on you tube

Hill was known as a good ref. Furthermore, according to Phil Neal's first autobiography, if you swore at him you had to expect the same in return. He was not intimidated.

Trevor Whymark told me off for talking too muck on the football pitch at a holiday camp in the late 80s (Think it was summer of 87) at Corton Caravan Club. Still a good coach, taking time out to coach us kids on our holidays, even though I'm a Norwich supporter!

Love the old games from the past.....great atmosphere, and with muddy pitches , there seemed a more normal down to earth grittyness to games , and the crowds were amazing.....I know the game now is awash with money, and pitches and stadiums have improved dramatically....but the less than perfect pitches, and players who smoked and enjoyed a pint or two , have disappeared , but that's what gave the game a real charm , that's sadly lacking from modern football.

remember the Spurs Derby replay very well Tottenham 3-1 up with 10 minutes left and got beat 5-3 after extra time Davies scored 3. Tottenham would not win another match in the fa cup until 1979

The worse the pitch the better the football & excitement. I mean by October the pitch was mud and sand. Sunday pub soccer games had better pitches, was it built on a swamp or clay. Cracking atmosphere & Roger Davies bundling the ball into the goal net. 73 was a good year but also bad with Man Utd kids wrecking stands.

In the FA Cup at that time if there was a kit clash then both teams changed. The same should have applied to Derby v Spurs but it seems that only Spurs changed and wore their yellow kit but with white shorts instead of navy. Maybe that was done to help distinguish between the two teams on black-white teles. Both Everton and Millwall should have changed too but only Millwall did. Maybe the rule wasn't being strictly enforced?

Chelsea allowed £5,000,000 in 1972 for a complete stadium rebuild, but the east stand came in over budget and put Chelsea into so much debt, and delayed the stadium redevelopment for upto 25-30 years

DJB 1965 Reading ur channel and comment about both channels showing archive games like these. To be honest if u had channels like that,showing Brit and foreign games,I wouldn't waste my time with today's Phony BS!. I'v been living in the US for the last 21yrs,and from about 2006/7 Fox Sports would show some of the EPl big games live+ the UCL,so that was cool,and then u had the 2010/2014/2018 World Cups(in South Africa,Brazil and Russia -all the games were shownand in 2014 NBC Sports picked up the EPL. .Now in the first 3 yrs they showed all the games played over the weekend(and midweek games)then they introduced their NBC Gold app (which of course u had to pay for&BS👎 )and they usually picked out a prime game of the schedule!More BS👎 ..So with all that said,it certainly allowed me to catch up after pretty much missing most of the early 2000 Football and the thing is I certainly did/have noticed the difference!!. But back to my original comment,it wouldn't be a contest about my choice of viewing if the BBC or ITV(or even Chanel 4 with their few seasons of coverage of the Italian Serie A)decided to do what u have done,with these old games!..So a solid 👍👍 of appreciation.. ps.What's the 1965 signify ur D.O.B?

Stamford Bridge was such a dump back then. Building a new stand back then meant going into administration, selling best players off & the ground still looked a dump. The Shed. That has to be the worst stand ever knocked up the day before & then the pitch was so far away at one end you needed Jordell Bank & the Hubble Telescope to see what was going on!

Second goal went in, a fair few jumped up to celebrate behind the left hand goal. By the sound of the cheers, maybe 5-600 went up,..maybe on a special train..long journey! Poss 50-60 went into the back of the home end for a fight; would have been heavily outnumbered. Hundreds of Villa boys, in the same year, 1973, got trapped at New Cross Station..and this before the game.. as large home numbers were waiting outside. In those days, police escorts and safe segregated terracing for visiting fans were not yet invented. You literally took your life in your own hands if you travelled away. Could be seriously scary times.

The old FA Cup rule; when both teams had the same colour first strip (Chelsea/Ipswich both blue) BOTH had to play in their away/alternative strip ! So we have Chelsea in yellow Ipswich in red!
