Hey dude,you need to hook yhe shoulder belt into the lap belt and then buckle up. Those are the second generation lap and shoulder belts. The first generation started in 1968 and had a buckle for the lap belt and then a second buckle for the shoulder belt. I started driving in 1968 and I was that rare teenager that buckled up both the lap and separate shoulder belts in my grandfather's 1968 Electra.

You're right. We always used seat belts. I started driving in 76. I used the shoulder belts in mom's 72 Cutlass Supreme. Dad helped me get a 76 Pontiac Grand Le Man's . Beautiful car. Dashboard was the best looking of any other GM divisions. If you got in my car, You put your seat belts on. In 2000 head on collision My 98 Buick Park Avenue . Seat belts belts and Air bags. Broken foot. The girl on the wrong side. Broken leg. She had her belts on.

@@williamflack5767 In 1971 my grandfather was going to trade in the 68 Electra and I bought it from him and had it in college. Coming home one weekend a drunk driver in a Chevrolet suburban crossed the center line and hit me head on. Because of the size and quality of the Electra along with the fact that I was wearing both the lap and separate shoulder belts, I walked away with only minor cuts, scratches and heavy bruises from the belts which was far better than the unbelted drunk driver who had massive head and chest injuries from the steering wheel. His unbelted passenger went through the windshield and landed on the hood of his suburban and had head injuries and several broken bones. Back then I was usually the only one in the car with the belts buckled, maybe a front seat passenger would begrudgingly wear a lap belt, but most people people were skeptical of seat belts back then. My father finally started wearing just his lap belt around home, but would wear both lap and shoulder belts when he went out of town or on a trip. I guess he thought only a serious accident could only happen away from home. The irony of that thought is that the drunk driver hit me only about 3 miles from my house.

Thats the door I almost fell out of when I was 4, as we slowly turned the corner apparently the door hadn't shut all the way and I was sitting on my mothers lap and I just reached out to catch the door and if I had it would have dragged me right out of the car but mom was quick and reached out for the door and for me at the same time....I remember it like it was yesterday and I'm 58. the car was brand new.

At 4 years old, you should have been in a car seat or at least a lap belt, but sadly safety was not a big deal back then.

I'm 53 and I remember standing in front seat while going places. We were definitely free-range children.

@@MrOktsx Absolutely, I remember that also. Thank goodness we weren't free flying through the windshield children. children. It's a miracle that we survived childhood back then.

Shoulder belts were mandatory January 1968.

My grandfather bought a 1968 Electra in February of 1968 and I turned 16 in April and he let me borrow the car on the weekends and I actually wore the lap and shoulder belts back then I thought they were a novel idea and I enjoyed the safe and secure feeling of wearing them. I was the only one in my family that buckled up back then.

But the retractable harness not until 1974.
@bradparris99Ай бұрын
That was the first 3 point lap and shoulder belts. The shoulder belt was the inertia style that allowed you to move, but locked up when you hit the brakes hard or were in a crash. Way more comfortable than the earlier non-retracting shoulder belts.@@stephendavidbailey2743
@bradparris99Ай бұрын
@@stephendavidbailey2743They were actually the first 3 point seat belts and were way easier to buckle up and more comfortable to wear. The problem was that hardly anyone wore seat belts back then or if they did use the new 3 point seat belts, they put the shoulder belt under their arm creating a 3 point lap belt offering only protection for the lower body like the previous separate lap and shoulder belts. I think the auto designers thought that the shoulder belt was no longer "optional " and would offer much better protection.
@bradparris99Ай бұрын
In 1970 Ford actually had an optional non-retracting 3 point belt. The shoulder belt latched into the lap belt and then buckled into one receiver. My uncle had a 70 LTD with that setup and they were awkward to use. GM went with that configuration mid year of 1972 and they also were awkward to use. My uncle traded the LTD for a Pontiac Bonneville. A bit of useless trivia.
