I sold these cars when they were brand new. Boy does that bring back memories. I was only 22 then. Those were the days when dealerships gave you a brand new one to drive for 7,000 miles then sell as a demo. I had a Centurion coupe 455 in Bamboo cream. Those were the days when Buicks and Caddies looked like they should look.

OMG, now that’s what I call a car, that’s what you saw in the showroom when you went to your Buick dealer, not today you walk in and it’s SUVS, this is what needs to be built, a 6 passenger car with ride, room, power, and most of all, STYLE!!!!

You hit the nail right on the head my friend. I mourn the passing of these luxury cruisers. I don’t get this SUV/crossover craze at all!
@edprall5648

The style of these old cars is probably a direct result of the fact that the materials used were at the time undervalued. Today, I think we are hopefully starting to understand that all the crud that went into these beasts doesn't fall from the skies. I appreciate that the relics are being loved and cared for, but the idea that we should strive for a return to that kind of styling is not realistic.
@martinliehs2513
@martinliehs2513 3 жыл бұрын
@@edprall5648 it's not much bigger than the crew cab pick-ups that many now use as a family "car", and probably smaller and lighter than today's Suburban. A modern V8 engine and 6 speed transmission under this body would probably get you at least 25 mpg.

@@rockerdriver It all started with evil Reagan. He allowed these vehicles -4 wheel drives, the truck passenger vehicles to bypass the pollution controls that cars had, so this reduced costs to the manufacturers and so it all took off. Seeing how foreign makers want to sell in your country, they too started to make them. Hence we have the situation today. More resources used on the planet. You have to tax them higher to weed them out.
@paulparoma
@paulparoma 2 жыл бұрын
@@edprall5648 Yes and no. Many modern vehicles use a lot of materials you deem previously undervalued. Just look at those bloated, ridiculous trucks/SUVs such as the Escalade or the Tundra. The only reason they exist in such form is because, as "trucks", they are exempt from CAFE. The style of the old cars reflects the style of the times more than anything else. Beauty and elegance, along with a smooth, quiet ride, was something nearly everyone appreciated and looked for in an automobile. The whole world knew and envied "The American car". Today, it's all about being aggressive, and the most popular car in America (and the world) is the stupid Corolla.

My friend's Mom had a '72 Coupe de Ville with dark blue metallic & brocade into. Stayed in garage and rarely driven after '77 when she got a tan Datsun 510 wagon Damian took to college. Damian wanted something stylish & ditched it for a Dodge/Mitsubishi eclipse type thing. Mrs. Nieman got $800 or so on the CdV trading it in on a c1988 Cutlass sedan from Standard Motors.

Awesome to be original. It takes a lot of care to keep one this nice for 50 years. I had it's sister, a 72 Olds 98. Literally a couch on wheels. That under hood light is detachable and has enough wire to reach to the back of the car. There were no phones with a flashlight at the time so it was a very handy accessory. I had one in a Pontiac but it was mounted in the trunk.

I bought a 1967 Buick Electra 225 (named for wife of a GM Division Chief and 225" or 18' 9" long -- Deuce and a Quarter) for $75.00, in the mid 1970s. She was a magnificent car, though a beater with some body damage from fender benders. I did my own tune ups, brake jobs, shocks. I could get 19.5 mpg at a steady 70 mph. There was a 430 cid big block with a 750 cfm Rochester 4 bbl carburetor. This is one of the best cars ever made. A '73 Buick 225 would easily cruise all day long at 115 mph. Compare these and other Big Three luxury cars with same year European luxury cars -- no contest -- Made In USA wins.

My dad ordered his in l8 '71. He got it in 1/72. Everything the same except the HEADLIGHTS dimmer. Lampmoniters, cornering lamps, dual exhaust, trailer tow package. He loved that deuce. His was a 2dr. Dark blue, with white vinyl top. He would drive down to Fla, from NY st8. He kept it in tip top shape. A bit thirsty, but, well worth it. He kept it til '76. Bought a new 2dr Limited, but, Pewter exterior & maroon interior. Again, fully equipped with now, an Astroroof. What disappointed him was the lazy limited axle, & the detuned 455-4bbl. Even then it was more thirstier. It was beautiful MASTERPIECE. In '66 he got his 1st new deuce. He would turn in his grave knowing how Buick is NOW.

The greatest passenger car in history--my all-time favorite! The 1972 Buick Electra featured a correction for previous air ventilation problems, but the 1973 model year was the first that had the mandated "EGR" valve (an idea that could ONLY have been devised by the government--recirculate DIRTY exhaust BACK into the system!). Plus, I think the '72 Elektra was the finest looking of all of them. And that 455 Moon Rocket V-8 might only get you 7-10 MPG, but what a way to leave a carbon footprint! If I had $17,000 to spend, she would be mine!!!
