You guys crack me up. You're so young...lol. My father had one of these Electras and it remains one of my favorite cars. Everything about the car was easy and comfortable. It was quiet and roomy and I enjoyed watching the guys have such a positive experience with it. I loved long road trips in the back seat with its soft velour seats and high rear seat back. It was like a limousine but I have been in a number of limousines and this was nicer than all of them, perhaps because the velour was so soft and inviting. Driving it I recall a few things. The steering ratio seemed quicker than I had expected making it easy to whip around corners, and the engine had tons of torque and would lay a scratch but it never had to rev. It just went without any complaining or fanfare. I know cars from that time period have a reputation for not being very good but this car was super reliable and I think my father got about 188,000 miles on his. Again I really got a kick out of seeing these guys have so many good things to say about the car and that there is nothing bad they can say. I have had conversations over the years with people about my loving this car and it is good to see I am not alone in my admiration.

Power windows and locks were available since 1947, as was air conditioning on the Packard and American Motor's Nash.. Chevrolet offered A/C in 1955. Cadillac offered it in 1948. By 1975, all of the modern conveniences were common on the luxury models. Chevrolet offered anti-lock brakes in 1971 and Cadillac and Oldsmobile offered airbags in 1974. That was 9 years before Mercedes offered them. Guardrails were in the doors by the early 1970s too. That is why the doors on these cars were so heavy. Never make fun of these cars. At 75 MPH, on the highway, the passenger could sleep through a whole tank of gasoline.
@petermartinijr.10123 жыл бұрын
The GM anti-lock was only for the rear wheels in the early 1970's, same on Continentals. Chrysler was the first car to offer anti-lock brakes, and they did so on all 4-wheels. But by mid 1970's no American company offered them, not even as an option. The technology was around since the 1930's on air crafts, but automakers didn't think people would want it on their cars, and they were right. No one ordered them, and it wasn't until they were mandated that you saw anti-lock brakes again on American cars, sometime in late 1980's

That was truly a wonderful car. The 1975-76 B-bodies were the epitome of understated, patrician luxury. The cars were utterly smooth and swaddled passengers in resort hotel-style luxury. Riding in one of those cars was effortless. They cruised down the highway like nothing else. For the generations that survived the Great Depression and fought WWII, having a large, effortless Buick to cruise America's highways and byways was exactly what they wanted. In those days, a man would graduate high school, get a job, buy a Chevrolet, work his way up in the company, get married, buy a Pontiac, have kids, buy an Oldsmobile, become a supervisor at work, join the local country club, buy a Buick, make it into upper management, and then buy a Cadillac. Those were the days when Americans shopped at Sears, ate Sunday dinners at home, and drove large American cars confidently down the interstate. Sadly, those days are gone. Now we drive useless plastic boxes around, shop at Wal-Mart, and eat kale smoothies. We will never again see such glorious days of middle-class opulence.

Your reaction to this car is priceless lol. Maybe being exposed to this car will help you understand how it felt to watch year after year for GM and Ford to "sabotage" the best cars in the world and drive them into oblivion. The 74 thru 76 years were one of the higher appealing interior cars. They can be called boats or whatever, but after a days work, you get into one of those and you felt like a millionaire. The most outrageously delicious was the 75 or 76 Cadillac Fleetwood Talisman. Think of the car you are in, and then think how Cadillac, being the top of the GM food chain, had to make that one the best of the 3 (Olds, Buick, Cadillac). They did top the Buick you were in, and I can't begin to describe what it looks like lol. If you find one of those, they would probably have to kill you to get you out of that car lol. But this car and the Olds (along with the Talisman) had the best interiors ever. The "living room mansion" interiors were for 74-76. Then the downhill started for a long long time :)

Interestingly, he also had a 1973 Cadillac Sedan de Ville (same body style and suspension) with leather interior. I loved them both, but preferred the Buick because its quiet velour interior was so much more comforting. Riding in it was like being in a soft, safe, floating cocoon, an experience I have had in no other car, so impressive that over forty years later I search for videos of it on the internet. While it may be easy to make fun of such "boats" now, until one has ridden in a proper example such as this, it's impossible to understand why so many still love and miss them. My Dad was a big Buick fan. The Buick Electra 225, was the pinnacle of world-class luxury in the 60-mid 70s. The best Electra according to my dad, was the 1970 in terms of reliability, performance/smoothness and build quality... the best car he had ever owned! We also had the big '75 Buick Electra 225 shown here. The '75 was bigger and more luxurious than any Buick built... coming close to Cadillac that year. However, in 1975 the rushed gov mandated anti-pollution engine modifications, the move to unleaded gas and the sheer size and weight of the '75... made this beautiful luxury car slow, less unresponsive and a gas guzzler. The 1975 Electra 225 is a magnificent looking premium-luxury car with iconic presence! I just wish Buick not been forced (by gov't. mandates) to "modify" its once mighty 455 engine.

Many things in new cars now have been around for a long time, the difference is that they put the stuff previously available only in upper class cars in ALL the cars (hence why car prices have shot up so much), then made digital instead of analogue to make it look "futuristic" or something. It's just a silly trend in the car industry that will eventually die off, like all the digital stuff in the 1980s.

I always find it funny when people your age review a car from the 1970's and are amazed they had power windows or seats. They had power accessories since the early 1950's, probably late 1940's. It was common to see a car like this, from the 70's, with power accessories. What would be amazing is to find a car like this from early to mid 70's that didn't have them. But power seats, windows, locks, A/C were all common back then. Even air bags, starting in 1973 or 74 you could order any of the GM B, C, or D bodies, the Electra was a C-body along with the Olds 98 & Caddy Devlilles, you could get them with air bags, it's just no one wanted them in those days. Chrysler was the first car to offer anti-lock brakes, yes Chrysler not MB, again no one wanted them.

That car is also a very unusual color combination. My 76 has the same color interior, the exterior is Mahogany with matching top. Your video has gotten me motivated to finish restoring mine (almost 20 years now) so thanks for that, Doug B.

+Doug Belanger that's awesome, thanks! We loved it and you should definitely restore it. You never see cool cars like these anymore. The owner was a friend of a friend. It's not for sale and I'm not sure how many miles are on it

I don't know why '74 was an odd year for the Electra. Unlike Caddy that changed style for the '74-'76 model years, slight front end upgrade in '75, the '74 Buick still looked a little like the '73, but not quit, and the dash was similar to the '-71-'73 Buick Electra, but again not quit. Do you know why that was? It just seemed like a waste of money to change the styling for 1 model year, considering it was on same platform as a Caddy.

The interior color is called "firethorn". I had a 1976 that had no vinyl top. The vinyl top did not fit a car with no center pillar....the inch or so gap between the pillar and the drip rail never looked right. These are reliable cars though. I had one for about 6 years and replaced the master cylinder, fuel pump, ignition module, and just general maintenance. None of those parts cost more than $40. Unfortunately, the Electra and the Oldsmobile Ninety-Eight are hard cars to find in nice condition. Cadillacs are easy to find as there were many more built and sold.

The 1996 Park Ave was the last best built luxury Buick that could easily compete with the finest European brands like the Mercedes S-class. These cars had the 3.8L V6 that were bullet proof & had great gas mileage, over 30 mpg on the highway. Sad but true, in 1997 GM started once again making cheap cookie cut cars that led to them going bankrupt. Prices for new vehicles are triple to what they once were, yet quality is crap.

I drove a 1976 Buick limited with a 455 from Los Angeles to Jacksonville Florida in two days. I wouldn’t want to make that trip in any other vehicle.

So well-shot! This could certainly be a longer video. Odds are it had 150-220 bhp when new, god knows what it has now.

I always thought the Buick Electra and Olds 98 were cooler than the Cadillac.

These Buicks of the 70s were fantastic. The only problems were poor gas mileage, and they didn't have air bags, ABS brakes, or zincrometal and plastics to prevent and eliminate rust. From a comfort, room, and style viewpoint, they were the epitome of GM luxury.

The one thing they need to revive from those malaise era boats is the razor thin B-Pillars IMO
@josephsummers24275 жыл бұрын
Government roll-over laws stopped that. Thin B-pillars disappeared in North American sold cars in the early 90s area. Today, cars have to pass a regulation to support I believe 1.5x their curb weight while on their roof (so a 3,500 lbs car has to be able to have 5,250 lbs of force distributed on its roof before crumpling). Cars are so ugly and bulky today because of the government mandates.

I think that it was in 1975 when Motor Trend compared the 98, Electra, Sedan Deville, Lincoln Continental Town Car, Grand Marquis, Imperial and New Yorker on a long road trip comparison. The Buick was proclaimed “King of the Road”
