Watching you tighten those nuts with the backwards channel locks is making my blood itch...lol If you just don't have a wrench, those pliers are designed to grip much better the opposite way from how you had them. Just giving you a minor hard time. I enjoy your videos...And Uncle Jerry's.

That is so funny, I just made pretty much the same comment other than letting him know he was doing it backwards. I did tell him to least get a Flippin wrench because it looks so unprofessional. I absolutely wish him well, especially being under if you will to Jerry Rosa. but for God sake, please look a little more professional.

Thing is, those tightening points are not what you use to remove the neck. The screw on the heal of the neck is the one you tighten to put pressure on the neck to remove it. Tightening the other nuts just crushes the guitar

Wow thats the first Guild neck that came of so easy with steaming. I once did a D40 1966 and it was an awful struggle... the neck was also glued alot on the sides of the guitar.

I have one of these to perform a neck reset on, so I thought I may learn something from your experience. I DID! How, to use slip-jaw pliers backwards when tightening a hex nut, how to endanger myself by not securing the instrument, or parts, in a vise while using sharp tools, and having your fingers directly in line, so if the chisel slips you can have a red stain finish at no extra charge. Thank you. S

Hi Caleb; I predict that in time your channel will become very popular, because you are better than most at explaining what you are doing. I've watched you repair instruments every since you started working with Jerry Rosa. You seem to be a good luthier now and will become even better as you gain more experience. On this guitar, you might have considered adding a very thin wedge shim under the fingerboard extension.Thanks for sharing your videos with us. Keep on truckin.
@zapa1pnt Жыл бұрын
The fingerboard extension was curled up, when he took the neck off. 3:51 A filler wedge would have just kept it that way. It, actually, needed to be glued flat.
@lrstaf6 Жыл бұрын
@@zapa1pnt He just increased the neck angle. That would leave a hump in the fingerboard where it joined the body of the guitar. Ir you put a straight edge on the fingerboard, the angle between the portion of the fingerboard on the neck and the portion on the extension over the body would show up.

Basic tip - use the correct size wrench on the bolts of your Stew Mac jig , not a plumbers grip

Hey You keyboard warriors! My mother told me that if you have nothing nice to say don’t say nothing at all , just watching KZbin videos doesn’t make you an” expert “ I bet most of you have never worked on a guitar in your lives! Thanks for the video Caleb Love to everyone from England

Well, Harry, I don't believe anyone has said anything that was not "nice". The fact is that many viewers have been watching repair channels for a number of years. Some of us have been doing repairs ourselves for some years, and the fact is that Caleb is still young and relatively inexperienced, even though he spent a couple of years with Jerry Rosa. I believe that most of the comments are offered in the friendly spirit of helping Caleb look for easier alternative methods to add to his repair tricks. Things like doing the sandpaper pull, rather than trying to shave the joint with a chisel, or putting a shim under the fingerboard extension are both tips that can help him in the future. We would like to help Caleb become a better and more experienced luthier so that he can enjoy a long and profitable career.

Am I allowed to offer "constructive criticism" ? I worked as a luthier for Maton Guitars, I have built my own acoustic guitars. I have repaired numerous guitars (never a neck reset). Perhaps heat the fret with a soldering iron might have allowed it to come out without so much tear out. Filling the fret slot with super glue to repair the tear out on a neck with binding is maybe not a great idea, as you might have problems getting the fret back in. The glue could be a pain to get out. Don't use plumbers grips. There is a mathematical formula for determining how much neck material to remove for the desired angle, instead of "lets try 20 thou to begin with". Don't hold the neck in one hand then try and remove waste with a chisel thinking you will get a uniform cut. As already suggested use the sandpiper pull method. Just friendly advice from Thailand,

Knobs would be even better. The tall type, they put the knob at the top,so you don't have to try to work around the tall bolt.

When you do sandpaper pulls, you don't have to worry about whether you carved it straight. Jerry taught you wrong on that one.

I haven't watched this one yet, but it did remind me to 'update' your Patreon to a marginally better amount. Edited to Add: I've never seen a neck just pop off like that one did. I've seen some come away easy, but that was just impressive. Also, there's a gap at the back of the bridge.

Hi. You changed the angle of the neck and put shims in the dovetail. But did nothing under the neck extention. Changing neck's angle the extention's end raises. And can't be simply glued back without a shim

Can we put 6 mm bolts on this type of Dove Tell joint , so neck resetting will be easy next time ?
@ricobass0253 Жыл бұрын
Why use a chisel instead of pulling glasspaper? It would have been a lot safer and easier to remove wood slowly and controllably. You were lucky the chisel didn't slip or grab and pull out great chunks out of the heel or your hand.
@ricklatouch22638 ай бұрын
What do you do about the gap under the fingerboard over the body? Do you just force it down against the body, making the action there very high? Shouldn’t you shim?
@jamesdahl69497 ай бұрын
What kind of wood are you using for the shims?

@jamesdahl69497 ай бұрын
Come on Caleb, get a wrench that fits the nut! I'm sorry that is so unprofessional and looks so crazy to be using a big set of channel logs to turn a 9/16 or 5/8 inch nut. Whatever it is, again I'm sorry but that's ridiculous.

I am going to suggest you watch Ted Woodfords channel to get professional assistance forget all you have been taught there is NO Guessing in this business....that is someones instrument and it needed PROFESSIONAL ATTENTION! presenting videos that echo you past employer has the same back yard feel... carving on carpet as a substrate with sharp tools is dangerous for both the operator and the piece been worked on. The tear out from under the fret board extension is due to impatience. NOT EVERYBODY can use hand tools ...One can tell if a person has command the tool or if they feel uncomfortable in the operation...These words may be harsh but watching your work was a nightmare ......

nice job. but i have a likely dumb question. if you have to shim and refit, why not refit both sides of neck and socket,recut,and modify to a bolt on. now i havn't the knowledge that you and jerry has but bolt on makes sense and so far the dozen i've built are holding up fine. don't hate me just curious. btw thanks for the info when i had to recut a saddle slot. came out perfect. thanks. keep it coming. us wannabees love to steal your knowledge and run.
