1972 Mercedes 600 Test Drive

This beautiful anthracite grey 600 has a new interior using GAHH materials and newly refinished wood from Madera Concepts. It comes equipped with the refrigerated compartment as well as rich burlwood tables in the rear.

When I worked on the MGM film "The Wild Rovers" in 1970-1971, actor William Holden brought his 1970 Mercedes 600 on location and to the studio. While the rest of the company traveled by air between locations, Bill preferred to drive, and often asked me or Ryan O'Neal to drive with him. That was one fabulous car! It's presently in a museum in Hollywood.

These were air ride suspension at least in the back. Often when a restorer finds one the air bag has split and deflated and its sitting low in the back.

@@lex1945 Exactly what I was about to state. First time I saw this car, as a child, our dictator president was in it, waving at us. It was quite a presence, the mere sight of the car spooked everyone. Jay Leno got it right, every 'evil dictator' had one.

I’m a Rolls and Bentley fan, but back in the 60’s they really couldn’t compete with the 600. Even though the 600 was more expensive MB still lost money on every one. (My father traded in his Silver Cloud III for one in 1968). They wanted to compete with Rolls/Bentley and used their engineering know-how to really hit the ball out of the park (but it was the most expensive car made at the time). Jay Leno has one and I believe he states in his youtube video that its his favorite car.....

NO CONTEST (and that is no compliment to the merc I assure you!!!) In my professional and personal life, I've handled, driven and worked on many Rolls' - Bentley and prestige Mercs, and it's Rolls and/or Bentley EVERY time!!!

Yes they were. When restorers find them, they have often sunk down in the back and need new airbags.

Yep, I believe they all had two horns and you either could engage them both, or just use one or the other (don’t remember if there’s actually a switch or if it has to do with where you push the horn ring on the steering wheel). My father had one when I was a kid (I actually tried to find his and have it restored, but couldn’t find it) - before he lost it through bankruptcy, he’d drive down the street and honk the big horn when he was driving by all of the neighborhood kids playing football in someone’s front yard!

It was a bit of both. I had the entire interior redone (Bud’s Benz and Madera Concepts for refinishing the wood), and a few chrome pieces - otherwise the car was in excellent shape. Although there are many horror stories of the expensive repairs that can await an owner (like the $11k window switch mentioned below), there is usually a cheaper fix that is just as legit (like having the old one rebuilt for $2 - $3k). The real challenge is in finding mechanics who know how to diagnose and fix a problem. With the exception of Star Motors in NY, most of the qualified 600 experts are in Southern CA, or Germany. If a mechanic is wrong on the diagnosis, you can spend a bunch of money and the problem isn’t fixed.

@@-Gunnarsson- No one needs poor fuel economy, but the rich can certainly afford it. I have a w126 and it gets 13 mpg city, but at least it has a huge gas tank (nearly 27.3 gallons). It is cost prohibitive for me to drive it regularly because I would use 12 gallons of gas every day with it. But for just driving around it is tremendous, and fuel economy is not a concern because of how enjoyable it is to drive. There's no feeling that you need to accelerate quickly or reach high speeds, but the car will do both easily. So, no the don't need poor fuel consumption but the result is worth it.
