Well, the time finally came. I had the 850's head redone, and the cylinders refinished. We started today at 10am and finished at 1830 hrs and the bulk of the motor is in only little bits to hand on the Interstate need to be put back on. Hardest pars the dam carbs and the head steady. We used your method, and it worked a treat. Thanks Gents

A bit awkward with just one person but it was easier than lowering the barrels over the pistons and trying to compress the rings into the bores at the same time. Thanks for the very informative video.

Good work guys . I also put the pistons in the barrels and lower onto the conrods . I find it easier to get the piston rings in that way . Thank you both for sharing .

Yes Mike, I always turn a circlip once it's inserted.

For you or anyone watching this !!! I build air-cooled VW engines. There is a parts house called CB Performance - look in there tools section - they make & sell a - wrist pin punch. After I get the snap ring in - I use the wrist pin punch & give it a light tap to make sure it is locked in the groove. Also handy on tear downs !!!

Mike - I may have missed something in between, but were you able to save the original barrel skirt -- a crack repair, etc.? Considering the way that it looked, I'd guess not but if you did, I'd like to know how. Thanks, muchly!

Hi Mike, that piston clearance seems a little tight for mine - bearing in mind pistons will swell when hot.

Mike .You need to start to bolt the crankcase bolts before you fully lower the cylinder

Why not install the pistons first and after that lower the barrel?
@MrPnew15 жыл бұрын
Exactly. Also everytime those rods fall against the opening of the crankcase I cringe. Even the slightest nick in the rods can be a crack starting to happen. In saying that we all have our own way of doing things I suppose

@@MrPnew1 I use pieces of bicycle inner tube around the rods untill I install the pistons.

Hi, Klass B, yes that's the conventional way of fitting the barrel. We decided to try this rather unconventional way this time and it seemed to work out well. Both have pros & cons of course. Cheers, Mike

Is that some sort of "gulp valve" at the rear of the engine on the rubber hose? I have watched the previous videos where you modified the crankcase breather but I don't recall anything about an external crankcase ventilation valve, etc. If so what is the source of the valve. Thanks.
@geoffgreenhalgh35535 жыл бұрын
It's not the best way of putting the barrel on! I have always put the pistons on the rods first. That table is wobbling around also, thought it was going to topple over at one stage. Mike doesn't look comfortable with this!
@swooshdave5 жыл бұрын
How do you hold the barrel with your method? The wobbly table adds drama. :-)
@mitchburk51125 жыл бұрын
Actually it's a great method. I've done it with the cases in the bike by myself. Just lay the barrel on the front studs and downtubes, crank at nearly tdc, wiggle the crank a little bit to get the pins in, insert the clips and lower the barrel. It helps to put the gasket sealer on the bottom of the barrel before hand, then you don't have to hold the barrel up to put it on the gasket.
