That 1972 USC team was an absolute beast.

This USC team was one of the greatest teams in college football history. They had only one game with a margin of victory in single digits (9 point win over Stanford). They were absolutely dominant undefeated National Champions! ✌🏼🏆

I was there at the Coliseum, and was 11 years old. Never missed an 'SC home game from 70-74. Honestly, it seems like yesterday l watching this game live but it was 52 years ago. Was lucky that my late older sister used to tutor several 'SC players in advanced math studies, and of course l never missed a home game thanks to the guys sis tutored giving us tickets. My first football game! 6 years old. I watched it on a small Sony black and white box tv. Bad reception. I never stopped watching- 51 years and counting.

This Southen Cal team was fantastic. Even more incredible were the Nebraska Cornhuskers one year earlier. More complete than any team before them and perhaps since. Their defense was not only suffocating but created turnovers like a fry cook flipping flapjacks!! In that season, Nebraska quarterbacks threw only six interceptions. Their defense intercepted 27 opposing aerials!! Watch film of that team and you'll observe football played at its highest technical level. In 1988, a panel of experts voted them the greatest college team of all time. This USC team was top five though. No doubt.

I agree with you about both the ‘71 Huskers and ‘72 Trojans and for years they were 1 and 1A in my book. Then came the 2001 Miami Hurricanes. Although it’s impossible to compare teams of different seasons let alone eras, the ‘01 Canes might just have been the best one year team in history.

@natch27 The Canes in 2001 were absolutely in the mix of the greatest individual teams. Since you're reminiscing about that team, I'm sure you remember the 1995 Nebraska Cornhuskers. That team averaged 52 points per game, and only one team came within two touchdowns of them. That is the best college team I've seen since I've been watching the game. They validated that standing by destroying Florida in the Fiesta Bowl, 62-24!! While no team produced more NFL talent than Miami, that Nebraska team had more GOOD players than any team I've ever seen. I can recall one Florida possession when announcer Jim Nantz stated there were plays made by Nebraska players normally on the third team depth chart!! Better yet, at one juncture, they put in an entire unit of backup offensive linemen. You couldn't tell the difference!! In fact, one year earlier, Nebraska dominated the fourth quarter against Miami, outscoring them 14-0 to win the national title. That Miami defense had pro football Hall of Famers Warren Sapp and Ray Lewis on it!! Depth won out. There are some fans thumping for the Canes and others for the Huskers. The 95 Huskers edge Miami out, in my opinion. Both were great, though.

The '72 Trojans were among the 5 best teams ever! And did you note, AD not only returned kicks, but also kicked off for SC. He was robbed of the Heisman in '74

AD was also a stellar baseball player on Rod Dedaux's championship baseball teams. Baseball was why AD came to USC.

Only ones that come close are 1971 Nebraska and 2002 Miami. The Fiesta Bowl was stolen from them - that team had insane talent.

That team, that team. Pro-style offense & defense even though they were in college. Coach McKay admitted in later years that he regretted not giving Sam Bam more playing time to showcase his immense talents. To me as a kid, Sam Bam was as tall as a skyscraper, having to WAY up @ him the first time l met him to shake his Hand 😆 Sam Bam was one of the kindest, & gentle persons l've ever met & known as a kid. RIP Sam Bam 🙏🏻✌🏻✌🏻
