I have a 1977 Olds 98 Regency that I bought from my next door neighbor's estate. It was parked in 1989 when she went to a nursing home. She was 86 then and lived to be 101. It was not started again until 2005. Had to put in a new gas tank and all the rubber items got replaced. Amazingly, the engine started right up and the car runs fine to this day. It had a little over 72,000 miles when I got it, and now it has around 78,000 miles. I drive it on weekends and it has done very well.

In the mid-1980s My parents bought a used 1976 Olds 98. All black exterior with black interior. It was the family car during most of my childhood and early teens. My siblings and I called it a limo because it was so long.

You don't hear the word smooth in today's commercials anymore, because modern cars aren't smooth any more. It seems like it is all about sport and connectivity...that sucks.

@@gloriamoreno8668 So True ! Who wants road feel. I like floating on a cloud like my old 1980 Cadillac Coupe DeVille. 235/75/15 Tires means I didn't feel or hear a thing but smooth riding. My new improved SUV has 245/40/20 and I feel every crack or ripple on the road, it sucks.

@@maxredman1015 Amen to that! As a man who was born in 1961, I have experienced both the best and the worst Detroit had to offer. American automobiles went from having the ability and freedom to build their cars as they wished and, the cars which American buyers wanted. These were stately or sporty, extremely powerful *ALL-AMERICAN CARS!* As a result of this freedom Americans had massive 'Personal Luxury Cars', 'Muscle Cars', dozens of different models in each division and hundreds of different 'Option Packages' from which to choose! Then, 'Uncle Sam' stuck his nose in the situation with regulations, like minimum MPG requirements and "Smog Control" devices which choked the life out of Detroit's finest engines! 'The Big-3' (Ford, GM & Chrysler) and 'The Little One' (AMC) began chopping chunks of sheet metal off of their once grand models and designing new 4-&-6-cyl engines or de-tuning their existing engines to the point where true horsepower was gone. We once had American engines with 475-plus horsepower, that same engine detuned now offered approximately 160-hp! I believe that 1969 was about the last year in which we could buy a real, untouched, unaltered American automobiles. If Ford, GM and Chrysler would blow the dust off of the blueprints for their 1960's-early-1970's models, build just 10-thousand of each model (with modern quality: 'fit and finish'), then those ten-thousand or less automobiles would NOT be bound to follow the air pollution regulations or MPG minimums; hence you have classic American cars without the Govt. regulations choking the life out of them! *If only!*

We had a ‘72 Delta 88 Coupe, Navy blue with a white vinyl roof. Man that thing was a tank, and the doors I swear were a mile long and weighed about six tons each. Technically we had a two car garage but no amount of manipulating the laws of physics would permit squeezing the Olds and our equally enormous Buick LeSabre in there at the same time. The funniest thing I remember? Driving (and parking!) The Blue Beast didn’t bother my mom one bit, despite the fact she stood only 5’3”, couldn’t really see where exactly the car ends, and had the seat so far forward she drove with the steering wheel basically in her lap. I used to call her “Captain” lol.

The EEEEcononical 350 v8 with 2bbl carburetor, LOL I miss the good ole days when a 350 was considered economical. They said the TH400 has been refined in 72. Those things were pretty much bullet proof/theSame for all years, so I wonder what mods they did in 72. Probably some minor valve body/tuning to the trans---i.e. he said smoother. However, I have heard in around 71 they had some Torque Converter problems, so maybe improvements there too.

I bought a turd-brown exterior with tan cloth interior, 4-door '72 Olds, Delta 88 in 1983 with about 80-K on her for $100.00, she even had a fancy vinyl top too! (remember the days when you could buy decent and reliable American transportation for a hundred bucks?!) It had no rust whatsoever and the turd-brown paint took a high-speed buff which was deep and as ugly as the day she rolled off the GM assembly line! She had the Olds 'Rocket' 350-ci but, I replaced the original Olds 2-bbl carb. with a Holly 4-bbl and my father-in-law, (who was a mechanical engineer and an excellent mechanic), re-tuned the detuned Olds 'Rocket' 350-ci from its original, (and pathetic) 160-net-hp to the point that she tested at just over 400-hp with 425-ft-lbs of rubber-burning torque. He also changed the rear-end for more low-end torque and 'off-the-line' power, don't recall the exact numbers. (he was the mechanical genius, not me). Not only was she powerful and as quick as a raped Ape, that ole Olds was surprisingly agile for such a large automobile; especially with the new and thicker sway bars which he installed along with firmer shocks and a few other clever suspension modifications. I was in my early 20's at the time and came from a typical dysfunctional American family so, I had to use it as my home as well when my parents kicked me out for wanting to marry a girl of which they did not approve... the joke is on them because, here we are 40 years later and we are still married! Anyway, the Olds Delta 88 makes an awesome home, the seats are soft, long and comfier than most folk's couches! It's a damned fine automobile as well, I wish they still built BIG, luxurious, and *basic (*no computers!) American cars like these!

Watching MeTv lately,60's 70's stuff, the background in most shows you see traffic/parked cars, dating from the 50's to the current rides of the day & the minute % off imports,it's weird to have been there & not have given it any thought, to see those time capsule images from then, & now and get excited & identify cars in movies and sitcoms. You see what are now rare low production high optioned cars driving in the back ground or featured,My three sons Pontiacs Bewitched / IDOJeanie Chevys..

The Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) regulations in the United States, first enacted by Congress in 1975, are federal regulations intended to improve the average fuel economy of cars and light trucks (trucks, vans and sport utility vehicles) sold in the US in the wake of the 1973 Arab Oil Embargo.
