24:14 Curt says "that's the first shift they've had." LOL Stanford shifted the HB the whole 1st half. Michigan sure dropped about 4 INTs. Stanford's best play was what is now called the Texas route with the RBs. Great video and thanks for posting!

Michigan's Billy Taylor soon went to prison -- one of so many Big 10 and Pac 10 stars who went from Rose Bowl glory to troubles. Art Sclichter, O.J., Ricky Bell, Charles White, Rob Lytle, Maurice Clarette. All either died young or messed up. Watching these archived broadcasts brings back their best years.

His mother died 4 days after the 1972 Rose Bowl. A few weeks later, his uncle killed his wife and himself. His girlfriend was stabbed to death later that year. His life did spiral down after that,. After being released from prison he turned his life around, and in 2003, received his doctorate in education. He is now known as Dr. Billy Taylor.

It always kind of amazed me, having watched a lot of these games on New Year's day, that Woody and Bo could put good teams on the field during the season and then do so poorly in bowls.

Pac-8 played better football than the Big-10

Me too. I don't know if it was from a lack of practice or what, but that year was probably the best shot Bo had at winning a National Championship, and he blew it, big time. Michigan should have destroyed this team.
@chethammer3 жыл бұрын
Home field advantage for most PAC 12 teams. Plus, a 3 hour time difference isn't easy to deal with. Not sure if they bussed or flew back then.

NO passing game-they could not run or score.
@jackprecip53892 жыл бұрын
@@jocamadad Michigan had no chance to win the "national championship" this year because #1 Nebraska played #2 Alabama in the Orange Bowl later that night, so even if Michigan won, they wouldn't have jumped over the Orange Bowl winner, ranked ahead of them. That's one example of why Bo correctly said there is no such thing as a national champion in college football, because teams were locked into certain bowls, and sometimes undefeated teams declined going to a bowl. The Big Ten even had a rule up until 1971 that no Big Ten school could represent them in the Rose Bowl consecutive years. So if you went to the Rose Bowl from the Big Ten, then the next year you went undefeated, you wouldn't go to a bowl. College football was always screwy when it came to determining national titles, but after 80 years, they're starting in the right direction to finally get it right, perhaps by 2025 we'll actually get the best 8 teams and conference champions in a national playoff, like it should be.

During the years between 1965-66 and 1978-79, Curt Gowdy was not only NBC's lead play-by-play man for pro football, but also called the Rose Bowl. If NBC were still broadcasting the Rose Bowl today, Al Michaels and Cris Collinsworth (the "NFL Sunday Night Football" announcing duo) would likely also have called the Rose Bowl. (However, if NBC had the rights to the College Football Playoff, Michaels and Collinsworth would probably have called one of the CFP semifinal games and the CFP Championship in addition to "Sunday Night Football")

I think that safety call blows any bad call ever out of the water. Contact at the 4 yard line and spun into the end zone. Woody Hayes would have had a stroke on that one.

They painted an Indian head wearing a headdress in Stanford's end zone, and Wolverine animal heads in Michigan's end zone, something you won't see in their games again. Also, if the S on the Stanford helmet were any smaller, it would disappear. What did they do, use a typewriter to get those on there?

Alot of nostalgia around both Woody Hayes & Bo Schembechler but...LBH,the game of cfb was changing on Bo&Woody from running all the time to passing at least a little,neither man adjusted or hired offensive co-ordinaters with passing philosophies and it showed up when playing in bowl games or quality non conference opponents. Bo Schembechler was a great teacher of fundamentals but he was also overrated as a coach his putrid bowl record (5-12)1969 to 1989, reflects a stubbornness in thinking.He was afterall a Woody disciple having served 5yrs(1958-1962) as an assistant coach @Ohio st. Then was HC at miami,oh 1963-1968 won 4 mid America titles before Don Canham hired him at UofM for 12k a yr! This game was a particularly galling loss as they clearly should have won but that fake punt set up a Rod Garcia fg in final seconds. Not until Anothony Carter wr showed up in 1979-1982 did Bo finally win a Rose bowl 23-6 over UWsh 10yrs after this choke. Woody was an even bigger embarrassment with his sideline antics (he was a diabetic) and the incident in the Gator bowl vs Clemson near the end of the game punching an opposing player,was the final straw that OSU needed to rid themselves of this assbackward clown. The 1970's were great for many things movies,music,sports,but the B10 went 1-9 in the Rose bowl and the 1 win Ohio st.over USC 42-21 was controversial as Michigan was probably the team and got f***ed over by the AD vote that sent osu (who the yr b4) instead of UofM who tied osu 10-10. Check out the documentary Tiebreaker about this very subject.

You are absolutely right friend. Bo is very overrated and Woody Hayes was a clown who did not know how to behave like a civilized person. Both coaches were too orthodox in their style of playing football and did not want to innovate anything at all.
@nathaniellathy65592 жыл бұрын
Bo Shembechler coached 21 years at Michigan and was still putting good teams near end of his career.Only heart ❤ trouble kept him from coaching longer.Woody Hayes got good results for a long ⌛. He made mistakes yet like Bo he taught players a lot of good things they could use on and off the field.Even in 70s Woody won a Rose and Orange Bowl.

Bo Schembechler was a master at losing games his teams clearly should have won. This Rose is prime example and it wasn't until WR Anthony Carter #1 forced him to occasionally throw the dam ball that he finally won 23-6 over UW. Bo's bowl record was 5-12 and he went nowhere in 1972,73,74 despite going 30-2-1 over that time particularly galling was 1973 team which got shafted by the B10 AD vote who sent a Ohio st. Instead despite the fact they went the year before. This loss was inexcusable as Stanford was a average team. Both Bo&Woody went 1-9 in rose bowls during the 70's which the game of football was changing from run,run,run to pass. Schembechler's heart attack the day before the 1970 Rose Bowl really cost that team as all the players slept walked thru it losing to USC 10-3 as Bo underwent triple bypass surgery. In this game that fake punt worked to perfection and Bo got his pants pulled down around his ankles and exposed as a clueless dunce.
