The 1975 team was my all-time favorite in 48 years watching OU. Not as great on defense as the 1974 team but still a great defense. Steve Davis, Joe Washington, Tinker Owens, Terry Webb. What a great time to be a kid growing up in Oklahoma.

All the seventies Sooners teams were great and fun to watch. My favorite team was the 1971 team. Joe Wylie and Jon Harrison were clipped on the Rodgers punt return for a TD but the officials swallowed their whistles although they were right there. Steve Davis might be the most underrated wishbone quarterback. He was undefeated. My brother played with Mike Vaughan’s brother at Tulsa University.

Two teams used to imposing their will with simple plays see a team from another conference that takes the game as seriously ($) as they do. Leach is a freshman here. Tried to throw every ball hard enough to get it outside the stadium. Completed 33 percent of his passes that season. Eventually got up to about 50 percent later in his career.

If Michigan had known how to short pass they probably would have won this game ! Their running attack was decent they got three turn overs but when they tried to pass most of the time it was a long attempts that were overthrown. Bo should have taught Leach to go to a safety valve receiver as opposed to trying to force it down field. Leach was a deceptive runner . Knew how to suddenly shift directions and get through the first line of tacklers untouched. Steve Smith was consistent in his running was experienced and knew how to run an offense.

Alabama was as good as OU in 1975. We lost our first game to Missouri by 13 and OU lost to Kansas by 20. Would have been a great match-up; #2 OU and #3 Alabama were both 10-1, while Mich was 8-1-2 going into the game. But the Orange Bowl wanted an average Mich team for the TV exposure simply because it was the first time the BigTen had played in any post season game other than in Pasadena.

Michigan didn't even complete a pass until under a minute left. Was less impressed with both teams than I was 49 years ago. Bama and Penn State played an excellent mistake free game but this contest was sloppy. Could have been another Natty year but back then Ohio State and OU had to lose before we got any recognition.

“They’ll be voting in the coming weeks”. Man, that’s rough, waiting to find out if you won the title or not. Missing a FG puts it on the 20 for the opposing team. Wonder why they changed that? Doesn’t seem too bad. Also, concussion protocol? No such thing. Ha! Lastly, what was Leach doing? Everyone of his throws were very low percentage and required a perfectly thrown ball. He should’ve checked down a whole bunch more. Checking down might not have even been a thing back then, I guess.

Why didn't the Big 8 and Orange Bowl Committee invite the 1975 SEC Champion Alabama to play OU in the Orange bowl like Nebraska did back in 1971? #5 LSU played #3 Nebraska the year before in the 1970 Orange Bowl. LSU were 1970 SEC Champions. SEC Champion Alabama played Notre Dame in 1974. ... #2 Oklahoma vs #3 Alabama would have been a better game.
@h2w25
@h2w25 3 жыл бұрын
Please, Oklahoma would have run ruled Alabama that year. Both had a common opponent of Missouri. Missouri went into Alabama that year and beat them by 2 scores. The Big 8 of the 70's was what the SEC west is of the present day. Bama played a cupcake schedule. They were a good team don't get me wrong but Oklahoma was back to back champs for a reason.

@@h2w25 , ... Well, we'll never know will we. CBB/Alabama wanted to play Oklahoma down there in the Orange Bowl. Big 8 Champion #2 Oklahoma vs SEC Champion #3 Alabama would have been a far better matchup than #5 ( 8-1-2 ) Michigan. To be fair, Michigan was ranked higher than Alabama when the Bowl invitations went out. But, Alabama was ranked ahead of Mich. last 3 weeks of the 1975 regular season. Okay, OU beat a common opponent. You can use that as your tipping point if you want... But OU was hosed off the field by an unranked Kansas as well. .. An unranked Kansas blew out #2 Oklahoma 23-3 there in Norman, Ok. Oklahoma beat Missouri by 1 point. .. Alabama lost at the beginning of the season. It was the season opener. .. OU beat an overrated #5 Michigan team that was no better than #7 Penn St. The outcome of the Orange Bowl surprised no one. .. Both the Orange Bowl and the Sugar Bowl were Boring games. .. Big 8 Champ Oklahoma vs SEC Champ Alabama would have been a Championship Game at starting time.
