I love watching you work. I hope that your customer is paying you properly, because I've NEVER had a mechanic show so much care in their efforts.

Elin, thanks for making these 'long' videos; they show us the details of the job and explain the reasons why you do what you do. It makes your videos really educational and not just a 'waving of the magic wand'!

Thanks for sharing the overdrive wiring - it's on my list this week in my 1974! I guess I'll make short work of it now 😀

The solenoid is pretty expensive too. I thought mine was not working but replaced it prematurely. Now I have an extra solenoid 🙃.

Elin, are you familiar with the OD "Logic box" sold by Revington TR? I have one I plan to install in my TR4 (A-type). As I understand it, the box makes the gearbox and OD act more like a close ratio 7-speed. The box "disconnects" the OD automatically each time you up shift. 1st > 2nd > 2nd OD > 3rd > 3rd OD > 4th > 4th OD. A momentary switch is used to engage the OD, while the box keeps it engaged until the shift is done. I installed a momentary button switch in my shift knob, so it's all done with the same hand (no lever or dash knob). Another thing I plan to add is an indicator light on the dash, to show when the OD is engaged. You mentioned accidentally leaving OD engaged. That is possible with the standard lever, but should be impossible between the indicator light and Logic box.

When I drove in London stop start traffic, it was nice to switch between 2 and overdrive second as I rarely needed 4 th gear and overdrive second was a nice compromise for 3rd gear.

Yes, I’ve heard of that and I am going to make my own version of it for my GT6 when the time comes. I am always forgetting the overdrive switch is on when I stop at a traffic light for example and then I go 1st, second and then 3rd with OD. By the time I realize and turn the OD off the RPM is pretty high and now I am basically downshifting… so this is the main reason I want to make it work this way.

Sterio Radio??? In a convertible?? Well I can see the need for the amplifier so that you can actually hear the Sterio above 40 mph. In my '74 the music is the exhaust note and I don't care if that's all I hear for hours. Of course I don't have music when I ride my motorcycle on multi day tours so I'm used to it.

When I used to commute to work every day for 2 hours I pretty quickly realized that the engine sound is not enough entertainment. Especially when most of the commute is actually sitting in traffic, idling. I have an amplifier AND a sub in my car and I wouldn’t give it up for any engine sound. I can always turn the radio down and listen to the exhaust if I miss it so much.

This is a VERY HELPFUL and USEFUL video, as I am presently rewiring my Overdrive, and yes those J-type solenoids are VERY quiet!

Those angle drives are a real PITA, but they do a reasonable job, and last a fair amount of time, in my experience.

A stereo in a Triumph is like a raincoat in the shower, but everyone to their own. Great job on wiring both the overdrive and the sound system. Thanks again for all of your efforts to explain in detail these rather esoteric jobs.

I recon the owner of that TR-6 would have been hard pressed to find anyone else who takes the care and effort that you do. Excellent work (as always) Elin.

Depending where you are. In Europe the main supplier is Rimmer Bros and in North America Moss Motors or British Parts North West

I watched a video a while back where a guy that competed in vintage races over here in the UK had a really nice modification to his overdrive controls. Instead of a simple on/off switch, he had a momentary switch that fed into an electronic box of tricks - which toggled the overdrive when it was pressed but (the black box) would drop back out as soon as he went through neutral to grab the next gear. So the gearbox operated like a sequential box. He could go 3rd, 3rd overdrive, 4th and 4th overdrive fluidly with little effort. I think it was allowed because it could be achieved with the standard gearbox switches and a clever solenoid arrangement. It proved very effective. Great video as always. Stay safe out there.

@@RustyBeauties Yup. It would be very easy to achieve using a simple microcontroller - which I'm sure is already available. Doing it with just solenoids may take more figuring out but I look forward to seeing you get something working in a future video.
